Rating: Summary: A Wonderful Read Aloud for Middle Schoolers Review: I really enjoyed this book on many different levels. I think it was a great read aloud for my 6th grade students. The way the book was written lends itself to an easy southern accent, which made it fun for me to read aloud. However, more than that, I loved to watch my students react to the book. In a middle schooler's mind, fairness is very important, and this book showed how unfair the world can be.I was a little dismayed reading a few of the negative reviews. I cringed when I saw some reviews saying, "just another slavery story." Perhaps this story doesn't make everyone's top 10 list, but it is definitely a work of literature to be respected for it's description, plot, character development, and as a tool for students to analyze fairness. A+++++++ This book comes highly recommended not only by me, but by all of my 11-13 year old students!
Rating: Summary: Nice story but Cassie got on my nerves a bit! Review: I loved the Logan story but I felt the main character, Cassie, was a bit naive to be growing up in Mississippi 1933. I mean, she said and did somethings to white people that could have gotten her whole family killed. I thought they raised her too protected so she made some situations dangerous for her family. I felt for T.J. but I guess the author had to make him the bad guy to counter Cassie's personality. T.J. and Cassie were a lot alike except T.J. didnt have the benefit of a strong family structure to protect when he did stupid things like Cassie did when she did stupid things. Notice how opposite their fathers were? All in all, a good read...
Rating: Summary: A Truthful Work of Fiction Review: Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry is one of my favorite books, not only because it reflects my heritage, but I liked how Ms. Taylor wrote it, using her father's family stories and weaving them into the book. The part I liked the best, even though it was sad, was when Mama told Cassie about racists and how they think. I also liked the parts when Cassie and her grandmother were in Strawberry, even though that was a sad part too, but it shows how painful history and the truth is. I think this book should be on all school reading lists, and I think it deserved the Newbery Medal that it won in 1977. I also enjoyed the talks Cassie had with her parents, and how much the family loved and cared about each other. It really shows how much some families miss these days.
Rating: Summary: Unoriginal Bore Review: This book is a total copy off almost every other book about racisim in the 1930's. It does not show any signs of creativity or thought on the author's part. The whole book had no plot and the author did not even attempt to make it unique. [...]

Rating: Summary: Book Review Review: Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry, by Mildred D. Taylor, is a book about the struggles and hardships of a black family in the 1930s. In this story, the Logan family has a number of conflicts with the white people in their community. Stacey is the oldest brother of the four Logan children. Cassie, the second oldest and only daughter, is the narrator of the story. Christopher John is the second oldest brother and Little Man is the youngest. Stacey was TJ's best friend and together they had many adventures that often ended in trouble. Throughout this book, I feel that I grew with Stacey. Stacey is my favorite character because of his ability to understand. He learned a lot about how to deal with life in a prejudice community. I related to Stacey the most. Stacey was a true friend to TJ, and I like to think of myself as a true friend as well. Although TJ got Stacey into trouble throughout the book and hurt him, Stacey was always there for him whenever he was in serious trouble or needed help. I have friends that have hurt me a lot and whenever they needed a place to stay, my door was always open. I am a warm-hearted person much like Stacey. This book was definitely a "page turner" and I enjoyed it a lot. My favorite part of the book was when Mama sat Cassie down and explained to her why white people treated them the way they did. Mama told Cassie that white people were not any better then her and that they just didn't know any better. It was my favorite part because throughout the book Cassie didn't understand why white people were so rude to her until her talk with Mama. I recommend this book to anyone who likes to read about life struggles and how other people got through them. This book was easy to follow and was honestly the first book I have ever read all the way through. This book captured my attention after the first few pages, and I am almost positive that it would capture anyone else's
Rating: Summary: ROLL OF THUNDER, HEAR MY CRY!!! Review: Roll of thunder hear my cry is one of the most powerful books of all time. I believe every person on Earth should read this book to stop the racism and hatrid(hint hint **cough** Sadam) that engulfs this world today!!!
Rating: Summary: A book review for my 4th grade assignment ... Review: Roll Of Thunder, Hear My Cry by Mildred D. Taylor is about the civil rights of African Americans in the 1930's. Cassie Logan, a 9-year-old African American girl, tells the story. The main characters the children in the Logan family, Stacey, Christopher-Johan, Cassie, and Little Man. The Logans live in Spokane County, Mississippi and own 400 acres of land. In this book two of the Logan children don't like the chart on the inside of their "new" books. The chart is disrespectful by calling the children "nigras" and shows that the book was given to the African American children to use when the book was in very poor condition. The children's ma, a teacher in their school, understands their objection. She covers the chart by gluing a piece of paper over it. Ma did not put up with the disrespect and taught her children that they didn't have to either. The book continues putting the Logan family in situations unfair to African Americans and shows how the Logan family triumphs. I recommend this book to other people because it is full of problems and excitement. I liked reading about the Logan's solutions to their problems. When I read this book, it started off slow, but got very good towards the middle of the book. If you are bored at the beginning, don't stop reading or you will miss out on a good book!
