Rating: Summary: PERFECT! Review: I love this book! It is a great book. I read it in a group and they wouldn't let me read more then our assignment. I couldn't wait to read more and more.
Rating: Summary: I think this book is a wonderful book for children to read! Review: I think this book is great! I recently read it for my college children's literature class. I think she did a great job of developing the characters and really made you feel like you were living in their shoes. I think it is very educational for children to learn about what African Americans went through in the south during that time period! I'm very glad she won the Newbery Award in 1977. She deserved it!!!!!
Rating: Summary: This is a wonderful book. Review: This book is excellent. I had to read it becaue my teacher assigned and I thought I wouldn't like itI sure was wrong. After about the first chapter I really started getting in to it. I didn't but it down all weekand instead of watching TV I read. That is saying alot for me. The hardships that Cassy has to go through are unbelivable. I think everybody should read this book.
Rating: Summary: Really great book for kids, with messages. Review: I am a parent of a 12 year old 8th grader who read all the required books that my child has to read. This book was one that I could not put down. It really gives great insight on how the people were treated during this period. It showed how "Little Man" knew he deserved better by not wanting a discarded textbook. It showed how peer pressure can do more harm than do. Mainly, when Stacey is tricked by TJ. TJ makes fun of his new clothes because he wanted them for himself and Stacey falls the trick. It shoulds how a family fought to hold onto to their land and dignity. It shows how a family can work together as one for the ultimate aim of keeping the land in the family. This is true family unity. This is a great book for child and parents alike. Parents can sit and discuss feelings about this book with their children.
Rating: Summary: A moving story from a child's point of view! Review: Lynne Thigpen's narration of the novel on tape is remarkable. She conveys the personality of each character clearly with her considerable skills of oral interpretation. This story shows clearly the importance of doing what one must with honor and courage. Maybe if more of us could live our lives like the Logan family, we might make some changes in the world's ills. The examples set by Cassie's parents clearly illustrate the power of unconditional love, high expectations, and consistent but caring discipline for children; today's parents can learn from them.
Rating: Summary: Okay if you like this type of thing Review: This book is okay. I don't really like books like this, but that's just me. My favorite part was where T.J. was describing how he got beaten up. You should read this book if you like family-struggle books.
Rating: Summary: What a BORING book!!!!!!! Review: How boring can you get??? This book is about a black family who tries to keep their land. I kept getting lost and confused all throughout this book, and all it is is just another predjudice book. There's a lot of these out already. I'm not against black people or anything, I just really hated this book. I'm only giving it one star because it did have some sad and happy scenes in there, where you begin to feel more like the character, Cassie Logan. It also had a nice setting. Well, that's all I have to say about this book. Oh, and by the way, DON'T READ IT UNLESS IT'S FOR A BOOK REPORT OR YOU LIKE PREDJUDICE BOOKS.
Rating: Summary: I really enjoyed the book. If you like it, read the sequel! Review: This is a very powerful book. I cried at the end. I read it and loved it. Then I found out about the sequel, 'Let the Circle Be Unbroken'. It was much longer, but just as good. If you like books about civil rights, I highly recomend these books. My best friend read the first and loved it almost as much as I did. This is one of my favorite books. I definitely give this 5 stars!!!!
Rating: Summary: I think it is a good book. Review: I had to read this book for a Honors English 9 Summer Assignment. It made me kind of mad the way Cassie had to call a child of her age "Miss" because she was white. I recommend this book to anyone.
Rating: Summary: pretty alright... Review: Old Missisippi dust swelling with each step drifting back upon Christopher John's new shiny black shoes and the cuffs of his corduroy pants by lifting each foot high before setting it gently down again. Always meticously neat, six year old Little Man never allowed dirt or tears of stains to mar anyhting he owned. The story by Mildred D. Taylor, starts off as the first day of school. Little Man, just begining his school career, found prospects of him intriguing. As heading to school walking down the dusty raod, Christopher John opens the scene by talking about his dad's job. He was working on railroads, away from his children. That's how hard it was for them when they couldn't even make half of dozen what other people made. Living through racism in town, school, and everywhere. Well, many situations were about racism. Like when Little Man recieved text books in school, he was the only one with a poor quality book as he was also the only black kid in school. Next thing they know, his papa's home! He also brings a friend with him who will work for them, and was very helpful because of his muscular, tall, strong man. Seasons changed as time changed. Rainy days have passed and Little Man waited for a storm to clean the city. But it was the opposite as a huge flame takes over a neighborhood house. Next school year starts off when Cassie bumps into a white girl, and the white girl tells him to apologize but he doesn't. It was obvious they didn't apologize at each other because they didn't want to show shame on their race by apologizing to other that they hate. So, since the racism thing that caused ignorance and others, for example, Christopher John at a school dance party where he gets made fun of by a white boy, he and Cassie went to place which provides things for poor people. They went there to by a gun for protection. Christopher John was going over why a gun is needed, and how it's used. Now they realize what racism is all about. Like their papa getting in trouble for no reasons ! just because of the skin color. That's why later on he lost his job. So, then his family falls in trouble with money. But they decide to keep living through without borrowing. I think this book is not the best but good. The book starts to getting into things in the middle with the racism. As I wrote an essay about racism, I learned more on how it feels like being teased because of their race. This book tought me things, and found it interesting because it was a subject that I like. I recommend this book to all readers, and people who think racism is funny.
