Rating: Summary: Nothing but the Truth Pros and Cons Review: Pros:It is written like a documentary. This means that there are documents ranging from homework assignment, to letters, to conversations, etc. Of course it is all made up by the author. The language used in the book sounds like it is really a teenage boy growing up. He has a lot of problems and he deals with them like a regular teenager would. For example, Phillip Malloy blames his bad English grade on his teacher, Ms. Narwin. The book clearly states both sides of the argument. The argument is over why Phillip Malloy got suspended. The author leaves it up to the reader to decide whether he was suspended for humming the national anthem or for disrupting class. Everything in the book has a snowball effect. Phillip Malloy starts out humming the national anthem. It turns into suspension and eventually, the media turns it into a national controversy. All over America, people are questioning the school system and its rules. Cons: The whole storyline isn't very realistic. A teacher wouldn't send someone to the principal's office because he was singing the national anthem. Furthermore, the principal wouldn't suspend someone for doing so. It seems ridiculous for something so small as disrupting class to turn into a national issue. The parts with the letters from Ms. Narwin to her sister are very boring. The letters consist of Ms. Narwin complaining about how the school system is failing and how good the school system was when they were young. Sometimes, you just want to zone out.
Rating: Summary: The Truth Review: "Nothing But The Truth", a Newbery Honor book by Avi, is written in a documentary form which leaves the reader to make decisions for themselves. It is not written from one persons point of view, which allows the reader to see everything that goes on instead of just the limiting opinions of one person. This novel really makes you think about what you see on tv or hear on the radio because it's similar to many occurances in every day life, which allows you to believe the situations and relate to the topic. Avi somehow found a way to keep his audience interested throughout the entire novel. He moved at a pace which kept your attention because he did not reveal too much information at once. His writing technique and idea for the novel fit together well, and the ending was fantastic. I highly recommend this novel.
Rating: Summary: The Truth about "Nothing But The Truth" Review: The book "Nothing But The Truth" was written by the award-winning author Avi. And book received the Newbery Honor award, so you know that this combination will equal a great page-turning story. "Nothing But The Truth" is a story written in a documentary form, which allows the reader to make his or her own decision about what actually happened. Philip Malloy is a ninth-grader at Harrison High School. He isn't the best student, but has a gift for running and hopes to make the track team. But that is not going to be possible since he is not doing well English, which is taught by Miss. Narwin. Philip never like his teacher, and is so annoyed when he is put into her homeroom. In the morning the whole school in their own homerooms, listen to the National Anthem in a respectful silence. But Philip started to sing along, ticking off Ms Narwin. Was this a act of patriotism, or just plain rude? Only the reader can decide. In my opinion I really enjoyed this storyline. It was well paced and serious with a good dose of humor. The thought of an event like the one in the book happening i real ife seems believeable, and I am sure it has happened before. The events fit well and the reader won't get confused on what is happening. The charaters are classic; the student who hates school subject and the teacher who wants to help. The point of view is third person most of the time, but become first person when Philip is talking. Overall, I believe it is a great book for Young Adult readers.
Rating: Summary: Nothing but the Truth Review: Do you like books that tell you about a disrespectful student that does not stop singing or humming to the Star Spangled Banner? Or having your parents on your side because of it? Well I think that you will absolutely love this book its called Nothing but the Truth by Avi. 14-year-old Philip Malloy lives in New Hampshire and goes to the Harrison high school where he starts his so called "patriotism". During his 9th grade year Philip starts to be disrespectful to the teacher at least that's what she thinks. The reason how Philip is being disrespectful is that the national anthem comes on in the morning on the intercom and tells the students to stand at a respectful and silent attention while they play the song Philip sings or hums along with it and the teacher sends him to the assistant principal. Then it becomes like a snowball effect and gets bigger and bigger because Phil and his father go to their neighbor's house and his name is Ted Griffin he is almost part of the school board. He knows a person that is an education reporter called Ms.Stewart. Phil tells her the whole story and she tries to contact all of the people that are involved in it like the superintendent the principal the assistant principal and Ms.Narwin they all tell her that it is all wrong that they did not suspended Phil for singing the star spangled banner. Ms.Stewart publishes the story and then it goes on the radio and everything is ballistic! So if you want to read this exiting book and know how it ends then read Nothing but the truth by Avi. by jonathan
Rating: Summary: YAL: The Whole Truth Review: "Nothing But The Truth", is a story about Philip, a teenage boy. Philip hums the National Anthem in class and gets suspended for it. The entire book is a "documentary", so it combines letters, diary entries, and dialogue and newspaper articles. The beginning of this book starts fast and is a little confusing but through the continuing chapters all the information you gained is sorted out. Main characters such as Philip and his teacher Mrs. Narwin, become evident as the story progresses. "Nothing But The Truth" holds your attention from the beginning to the end. The book is fast paced and you can never quite figure out what is going to happen next. It takes place in a high school setting and follows the dilemma Philip has. The setting is not that descriptive because it is in a documentary format but it leaves room for your imagination. The book is very well written and he sequence of events is accurate. The characters are very real and all hold a personality you can connect with. Through the letters and conversations you learn about each of the characters unique backgrounds. The dialogue these characters have are very real and it feels like you are there with them. Dialogue in this book is the moving force. The conversations give the reader all the different perspectives.
Rating: Summary: An Interesting Plot Review: Nothing But the Truth was a very interesting book. The plot was one that i have never read before. The book does not seem like something that would happen in real life, but their are many examples of the same kind of "patriotic" cases happening all over the world. It was a book with many curve balls that kept you reading so that you could find out what was going to happen next. Everything about the story was in context with the other key points. Although, the book was not one of my favorites, it was relatively good with lots of interesting points.
Rating: Summary: ¿The Whole Truth? Review: Nothing but the Truth is written by Avi. Nothing But The Truth takes place at Harrison High in Harrison, New Hampshire. It's about a ninth grader, Philip Malloy, who gets a D in English class and isn't allowed to try out for track. By now he is very angry with his English teacher, Miss Narwin for giving him a D. This leads to a humongous conflict which gets Philip Malloy suspended from school for two days. Soon the story is all over the country giving a bad impression of Miss Narwin. Everyday the school gets letters, telephone calls and telegrams. Philip's parents and Ted Griffen (a candidate for the school board) do everything to make Philip look like an innocent kid who is just being "patriotic" and Miss Narwin just an old person who isn't fair. But the question is, is Philip really telling the whole truth? I really think that Nothing but the Truth is a very good book to read. I was really into knowing what was going to happen next, but it also bothered me, because that's not the type of books I read usually. I think everyone would like to read the book because it has a lot of action in it. The book really makes the reader feel all the emotions that the characters feel in the book. I recommend this book highly to anyone who is willing to sit down and read the book or anyone who loves reading books. I promise you, you will not regret reading this book because I know I liked it but I hope you do too.
Rating: Summary: Nothing but the Truth Review: Chris Skorusa Nothing but the Truth Reading II Summary Was there ever a day you woke up and thought it was going to be a good day but it wasn't? From That one day your whole week has changed it seamed like it could never get better. Nothing but the Truth is like it. The book is manly about a student named Philip Malloy. Philip is a Freshman at Harrison High. The first couple days of school were fine but there was this one teacher named Mss.Narwin. Philip didn't really like her. He wasn't doing too good in the class either he was getting a "D". With the D he wasn't able to try out for track just because he was failing this class. But it didn't get any better he got a memo telling him that his homeroom is switched to Mss.Narwin. That wasn't the smartest thing putting Phillip and Mss.Narwin together. While Philip was in the class he was suspended for humming to the announcements. With the suspension he has received Philip will be getting a lot of people mad. Response: I thought this book was very interesting there was always something going wrong. I can tell that the author of book must have spent a lot of time making this book. The book is written in dialogue from so you always know who is talking. There are also parts where you get to read Philip's diary and really get to know what Philip is thinking and what his emotions are. This book is really good at giving you a mental image of the story. There were some parts of the book that made me mad. Like how mad the teacher got just for humming and that everyone turned on him for not doing anything? But at the end of the book it all makes sense. I would rate this book 8 out of 10. Just because there was some situations that I don't think could really happened in life. But everything else was good.
Rating: Summary: Nothing But The Truth Review: Nothing But the Truth has like the weirdest ending, don't you just hate that? Sometimes it would seem like it's going to be either funny or something your just not going to get. Phillip Malloy who is a freshman that attends Harrison High. He is usually a good student and a very good runner. He wishes to be on the track team but later finds out that he has a "D" in Miss. Narwin's English class. He doesn't really like her at all. After hearing a word of advice from his parents to stick up for himself he then gets to a point of being rude in Narwin's class by singing the National Anthem, and after doing that will has life ever be the same and will he make it to be on the track team? Response- I personally give this book a ten out of ten. The author has done a great job creating this book and i think this has been his best book yet. There was a lot of descriptive detail in this novel. I thought it was really easy to understand being the fact that is was basically a play. I only think that there was one flaw in the book and it was the ending, it was clever but i think he could have made it more interesting. Nice job Avi, best one yet!
Rating: Summary: Read All About It Review: Suspended for Patioism A high school student gets suspended for singing the National Anthem during the morning announcements. In Nothing But The Truth, by AVI, Philip Malloy a freshmen at Harrison High School who loves track; was humming in Ms. Narwin's homeroom class in the morning. She repeatedly asked to stop on severely occasions. He wouldn't listen. So the Assistant Principal suspended him for two days. When his parents found about the suspension they went to far. They got a news reporter to go into this story more. This is what made the rest of the situation nationwide. Also lies started to form from this situation. When Philip came back, they moved him from Ms. Narwin's class. Kids started to ask him why he is doing this to Ms. Narwin. At the end, The Assisstant Principal asked Ms. Narwin to take a break. She was not pleased. What is going to be the outcome of this situation? This book was very interesting. I would give this book a nine out of ten. It was easy to follow at the end. In the beginning it was a little confusing. I like this book because it felt like you were in that situation. Also it was like reading a play. I dislike some parts when some of the pages where really long. Also the way that Philip treated Ms. Narwin. But it was a good book. It was very interesting at the end of the novel. The outcome made me a little disappointed.
