Rating: Summary: "Nothing But The Truth" Not a book for me... Review: "Nothing But The Truth" follows Philip Malloy on his quest to be on Harrison High School track team. When his principal tells him he can't try out for the team because of a failing grade he becomes determined to do anything to get out of that class, taught by the innocent, teacher of over twenty years, Miss Narwin. Philip displays his patriotism by humming along with the national anthem that is played every morning during morning announcements. An act of patriotism or a disturbance? The country seems to believe Philip has the right to do this. He becomes famous over night even if his motives aren't to show the love of his country. This book wasn't moving, funny, or made me think. Younger audiences (12-14) would appreciate it more than older teenagers.
Rating: Summary: Excellent Review: I would like to start off by saying that I really enjoyed the book, Nothing but the Truth, by Avi. It was very believable, especially in this day and age where people are being told what to do and what not to do left and right. The plot was interesting; Phillip wanted to get at his teacher and ended up making national headlines about singing the "Star Spangled Banner." The book and the story start at the same time, Phil goes to school and gets kicked out of class in the first few chapters. It doesn't keep you waiting and doesn't start at the end of the story either. However I felt bad for Phil and his teacher Miss Narwin by the end of the novel. Both of them were forced to leave school and start over somewhere new because of the minor incident that was blown out of proportion. Over all, Nothing but the Truth, is a quick read that held my attention the entire time. Its written as a script which also makes its easier to read, faster. The setting was a small town in New Hampshire but that didn't really play into the book until telegrams were sent nationwide from the small town up north. I don't think that the characters could have been altered in anyway. They all got along together and made the story as believable as possible, especially in the way they communicated to each other. The kids talk like kids do and the parent's quarrel like parents do. It was also interesting to watch the relationships between teacher, principal, and superintendent change as the story progressed. In the end I would have to recommend this book to anyone interested in a little patriotism.
Rating: Summary: Lessons Learned Review: In the book Nothing But The Truth it helped me learn a few things about the Bill of Rights. The lesson I learned is that it doesn't matter which way a teacher approaches a subject you should go along with it. In the book Phillip Malloy didn't like the english teacher he has Miss.Narwin. His reason was because she wouldn't laugh at the smart remarks that he made when she asked him to answer a question about the book they were reading in class. If you don't like a teacher then you should just deal with it other than making a huge scene about it later on. Phillip said that when Miss.Natwin put him out of her homeroom because he was being patriotic. When he was humming the national anthem. He went home and told his dad that she put him out for singing the anthem loudly. But really he was saying he was being respectful to his country, but really he just wanted out of her class and homeroom. So many of my lessons learned was that no matter how much you hate a teacher (which you shouldn't) go around telling lies and make it a huge deal in the world or education. Because if any person outside of the school hears about it they will tell another person and it is a un ending cycle and then before you know it the whole county or even state will know. S the lesson i learned was to keep your feelings about a teacher to yourself and any one else. If a person wants to honor their country they should do it in honr and not just for an excuse to get out of something.
Rating: Summary: Interesting, wonderful documentary, but lacking. Review: If you're interested in a genre such as this one (documentary) then I strongly suggest that you read this book, but, I, leaning further towards fantasy. Personally thought it was an okay read, most definitely not the best in the world, compared to H.P Lovecraft, Tolkein, and Terry Brooks, but still it's good for what it is.One thing I found somewhat interesting and quite annoying were the characters. Phillip, the main character, was cocky and his humor was corny in a way, and he was a manipulative little tyke. His parents were real morons, seriously, read the book and you'll see why, but I'm not sure many of you are that observant. The only one I found that had any trace of intellectual mentality was Narwin, the English teacher, one factor about her I found was annoying was she couldn't handle stress or serious situation well. So if you've got this far, you've got this far you're probably thinking "Good God no I don't wanna read this book now"...by all means read the book, it's pretty descent, everything has its up and downs, so go out, buy a copy and read it, if you don't like it, well that's your problem, burn it or something.
Rating: Summary: the truth will set you free Review: This writting is lessons learnd-Over all I liked the book.I learnd that you should not show Patriosm just to be a jerk,or to get what you wont because if you do than most likely blow up in your face, and you end up worse than you started off. If you do show Patriosm it shouldd be for the right resons and build up your character.Unlike the boy in the story, he made his self looklike he was a big fan of of the American national anthen, but at the end of the book he did not even know the words to it.
Rating: Summary: Irony Review: = Irony Reviewer: Jenna Brannon from Wayne Co.,Monticello USA Some of the suprises in Nothing but the Truthare Phillip dosn't get on the track team and he never gose out with Alison. When Phillip gose to his new school the teacher asked him to lead the class in singing the Star-Spangled Banner he starts to cry and when the teacher asked whats the matter he says he dosen't know the words. There was some irony in the title becausePhillip dose anything but tell the truth until it's to late. Someverbal irony is that Ted Griffensaid to someone that he belived nothing in print when actually he was the one that gave the story to the newspapers in the first place. Some dramatic irony is that Alison thinks Phillip likes her for her when really he just likes her because she's pretty and popular. Some situation irony is that Phillip thinks he'll get on the track team but instead he dosn't even try out. And he thinks he'll be left alone in his new school but he's not.
Rating: Summary: Patriotism Or Disrespect? Review: Have you ever read a book that you think you know what will happen next, but then next thing you know, it ends with something surprising or leaving you just hanging there? In "Nothing But The Truth," it is a little like that. Philip Malloy is a 9th grader at Harrison High School. He hums during the morning exercises, in which the national anthem is played.Do you think this is showing patriotism or direspect? Philip gets a big stink rolling all over the country. What did others say about this issue?Well, read the book. This book has really changed the way I look at the American flag and how I show my patriotism. If you read this book, it will or should do the same for you.
Rating: Summary: nothing but the truth about this book Review: 1. Is the plot clear and believable? The plot of the story is clear and believable. The story starts weird. There is just the right information. There is enough background to understand what is going on. The main character gets what he deserves. He doesnt resolve his conflict. He lives with the outcome, he has to, doesn't he? The subplots dont really help with the story. The story stays with its topic. The story moves pretty fast. The pacing really doesn't match the genre of the story. This is like a documentary, at times it gets boring, and at times it gets interesting. The story transports you to the time and place where it is happening. That's probably the best thing about the book. It tells you where and what they're doing. The characters, their actions, and the time frame agree. The order of events are consistent throughout the story. The characters are real. The actions are consistent in this story. The character's backgrounds are given to the reader in small pieces. You don't really know a lot about them, but you get waht they are like. The language match the time frame of the story. There's not much profanity, so, it's OK for younger readers to read it. THere are no heavy accents or dialogue issues. The way it's written is simple. It's easy to understand. Each character has a differnet pattern of speech like people in real life. The dialogue matches the conflicts in the novel. The novel does jump around to other stuff that you dont want to read because it can get you confused and it can make you wnat to skip some of the dialogue.
Rating: Summary: Nothing but the Truth Review: In the book,Nothing But the Triuth written by Avi, he tells the story of Phillp MAlloy in documentary style. Even though I read and liked the book, I didn't appreciate the documentary style of writing. While reading this book, I realized that you have no clue what the charcters look like or know what their personalities are, since the book is written in documentary style. That is something that I like to know in a novel and this book dosen't tell any of that, so ya know, thats kind of disappointing! In this novel, memos and conversations are used to show the documentary style of the book. In books I don't like that style of writing. I think that Avi could of have used dialogue instead of using conversations. But otherwise this book is really good and I give it 3 stars!!
Rating: Summary: nothing but the truth Review: the story line was great it was at the right time. It feels like your a kid in class and you can hear everything. No it's not pessimistic he thinks he is right about everything but he's not. It was a great book everyone would like it. The characters where on the dot. Yes, I know a lot of people like that they act just like Phil. The girl acted nice to Phil until he lied about the teacher. I didn't appreciate Mr. Loser's teaching style they can do anything they want in his class but if they get in another one they will get in trouble. Ms.Narwin was a nice teacher. I liked all of the characters in the story I could imagine all of them
