Rating: Summary: A Break With Charity Review- Michael Jenn Annie Jason Sandra Review: A Break With CharityOur Rating: :( Two thumbs down Ann Rinaldi's historical fiction, A Break With Charity, is about an adolescent girl's view of the Salem Witch Trials. She must choose between her family and the truth. Sounds enthralling? It could be, but it's not! A great theme...wasted. No excitement, monotony, and wordiness wreck the novel. To our minds, the story is like a rubber band, forever stretching, chasing the color away as the story line grows thinner and thinner. While reading Abigail Hobbs's trial, we were falling asleep. Although Rinaldi wastes this one, we recommend other Witch Trial books because most are exciting, edge-of-the-seat thrilling, and not as wordy as some books we know!
Rating: Summary: Maybe not up to standard, but still an awesome read! Review: Alright, right off, I'd like to say, I did like this book, it was interesting and everything, but I definitely think it was not up to Ann Rinaldi's usual standard. Normally, she has the skill of keeping her reader's in rapt attention all the way through the book, but there were points in this book where I just wanted to skip a page or two, to get past one slow part. Other than that though this book was excellent, very interesting to read a story told from the point of view of one of the early puritans, definitely worth reading, just be forewarned, it's not her best work.
Rating: Summary: "Excellant" Review: An unbelievably good story of the struggle against evil, as the heroine must choose:end the killings or sacrifice her family.
Rating: Summary: Well Balanced. Review: Ann Rinaldi has a bad habit of making Christians the villians. Supprisingly enough, her book is well ballanced, fabulously written, extreemly realistic, and over-all superb!! Although an avid Rinaldi fan, I was somewhat wary of this book because of the slant on most books concerning the Salem Witch trials. They make the Puritans out to be blood thirsty pompous fools instead of being, (for the most part,) good people trying to discern what was the truth and what was not. Ann Rinaldi avoided this slant remarkably!! Thank you Ms.Rinadi for an historically accurate book!! You have ANOTHER teenage fan!!
Rating: Summary: A GREAT book, recommended for anyone over 10!!! Review: Ann Rinaldi is a GREAT author who writes graphically and that helps you to understand it. This book was a pleasure to read and if only I had read it before I did my report on The Salem Witch Trials, I would've understanded it better (I GOT AN A though!!) SHE DESERVES AN AWARD FOR THIS BOOK!!!!!!!!!!!!1 :)
Rating: Summary: A Great Historical Tale with a Great Fictional Twist Review: Ann Rinaldi puts you dead center of one of the greatest battles between the Good and Evil of human nature. Watch through the eyes of Susanna English, a teenage girl lving in Salem during the beginnings of the Witch hunt. She longs to be part of the group of girls that visit that parsonage, being told stories, and having their palms read. But, suddenly the girls start to become afflicted by some "greater power". Susanna knows full well that they are faking their torments for the sole purpose of receiving attention, but when she confronts the head of the circle, she is threatened. She is told that if she tells the village of the girl's deceit then they will tell the village leaders that her parents are witches. Susanna must watch, in horror, the unfolding the the Salem Witch Trials, and see as innocents are accused of Witch craft, and condemed. Can she keep her family safe? Or will she herself be called apon?
I found that the book was very well written, and filled with twists and turns that will keep you on the edge of your seat. The worry of Susanna and other quickly-loved characters being called witches keeps the intense tone of the story. I fully recommend this book to anyone ages 12 and up. The best part about this book is that you are learning about history along with being thrilled by the turn of events.
Rating: Summary: This was an an exceptional historical fiction story Review: Ann Rinaldi's "A break With Charity A story about the Salem Witch Trials" describes a group of girls who falsely accuse people of the Salem community of practicing witchcraft, when in reality the girl were the ones practicing witchcraft. It was a tragedy how innocent people were murdered because of the girl's accusation. At the trial when the accused would deny the charge the girls would throw then selves on the floor and make sounds. These acts were to demonstrate that the person on trial was a "witch" and that the "witch" was controlling them to act in this manner. This was an exceptional historical fiction story. Throughout most of the book I felt almost like I was there. The reason for this was the book was very descriptive and engaging. The most descriptive part I can think of is right before Mary Bradbury was on trial. Susanna was going to the courthouse and described the scene around her she tells when it was, what she smelled, saw, and heard. All of that made me feel like I was right there.
Rating: Summary: AWESOME! Review: As a direct descendant from the Towne family, making me the 8th great grandniece of Rebecca Nurse, Mary Esty, and Sarah Cloyce, as well as Mary Bradbury, I was THRILLED to read this fictional book based on well researched fact. It was very enthralling watching the situation transpire from the young girls perspective. I also can appreciate the fact that she incorporated the lives of the real people who fell victims during the whole sorry business. Bravo....
Rating: Summary: An exciting book! Review: CRITIQUE The book A Break With Charity was exceptionally well written. It showed excellent voice and ideas and content. I would give this book a four out of five rating. I liked its historical accuracy with both the events and the characters. The author used very vivid and imaginative details that give readers a mental picture of what is happening. Though the book lacked adventure it was very exciting and was fun to read. I thought that the book was very interesting and found it most enjoyable. In the beginning it was somewhat slow moving, but as the story progressed it's pace quickened. I found it pleasing due to the fact that it was not choppy and it did not skip around from idea to idea. In other words it was easy to understand. The book is easy enough for a sixth grader to read, but challenging enough for an eighth grader to read. The author, Ann Rinaldi, used wonderful descriptive words, but did not describe the characters' feelings very well. She never showed the characters' emotions, so since I find that to be an important skill that needs to be practiced I was forced to give her book a four. Another book that I find similar to A Break With Charity is Winter of Fire, by Sheryl Jordan.
Rating: Summary: Wow, thats all I can say Review: Everyone knows Salem is where they had the witch trials, but only a few know more than that and no one knows exactly what happened. This book presents all the facts we know as well as Ann's own theroy to what happened. Not only informative but entertaining and thrilling. Fan's of Ann will love it and this is a perfect 1st book to become a fan of hers.
