Summary: Don't leave home without it!
Review: This book made our vacation! The most recent printing of the 16th edition (2003) was up to date and right on target with its helpful suggestions and comparisons on prices. We found wonderful, less-publicized companies, like Makana's boat tours, owned by people born and raised on Kauai as well as the well publicized hawaiian institutions, like Jack Harter Helicopters. What a difference it made to have Lenore as our guide! Not only did we enjoy her recommended activities (and pack more into one week than we could have imagined), but her restaurant reviews ere exceedingly helpful -- particularly Kintaros and The Bull Shed. Do not leave for Kauai without this book.

Summary: travel companion
Review: We just got home from the most beautiful island in Hawaii and made fairly good use of this book. Took in the Hawaiian language church service, beach choices for families with little ones, etc. The owner of one of the stores the author recommends for freshly cut leis (the one across from Kauai Community College) was thrilled when we showed her the recommendation because she had no idea they were even mentioned. We got a free bag of freshly sliced pineapples from her for showing her the promotion in this guide. One warning....avoid Kapa'a in the afternoons. The only traffic jam on the island.

Summary: True Local Insight
Review: I have been to the island numerous times over the last ten years and had never experienced the true Kauai until Lenore showed me the path. Her life experiences on the island and passion for its beauty and its people clearly come through in her writing. With this book in hand, I was better able to find restaurants, beaches and hidden adventures that I was previously oblivious to and would never have found on my own. It made the trip so much easier and efficient.

Summary: Indispensable!!
Review: A fantastic guide to a fantastic island. If you want the best impartial uptodate advice you have to get this book!

Summary: In need of an overhaul
Review: I didn't think this book lived up to its reputation. Not enough in the adventure department, too much emphasis on where to eat and shop. I had a hard time negotiating the way it was organized and felt much of the information needed revising. The cover promised more than the book could deliver.

Summary: The Best Kauai Guide !
Review: I just purchased my third copy of this book as there is none better written about Kauai! Lenore Horowitz goes out of her way to explore every aspect of this beautiful island and then to relay it in such an interesting and insightful fashion. I keep the book with me while in Kauai and use it as my only reference guide - what to do/where to go at the drop of a hat. It is a MUST for anyone going to Kauai.

Summary: Kauai Underground Guide a Great Travel Companion
Review: Each time we return to the island of Kauai and purchase the most recent version of the Underground Guide, we feel like we are bumping into an old friend. We have so many pleasant memories and the author's sage advise has always enhanced our time on Kauai. We are getting ready for our sixth visit and can't wait to purchase the most recent copy!

Summary: This is not a full service guide book.
Review: This is little more then a beach and restaurant guide. While these two topics are covered in great detail, how many of the 30+ beaches or 90+ restaurants can you visit in a week or two. There are better guide books available with this same information and much more to do and see on Kauai. By comparison, "The Ultimate Kauai Guidebook" is far more comprehensive and a better value.

Summary: A Must Have Guide to Kauai
Review: I stumbled upon this pearl of a book while browsing the web before a recent trip to Kauai. After reading all of the wonderful reviews, I had to take a look myself to see what all the hoopla was about. I was amazed and delighted! This comprehensive book goes far beyond the normal travel guide filler, clearly a result of the author's extensive experiences on this wonderful garden isle. My family and I spent two fun-filled weeks on the island of Kauai and The Underground Guide never left our sides! From delicious out-of-the-way eateries to pristine, hidden beaches - this book truly has it all! A must read for anyone planning on traveling to Kauai.

Summary: Not so underground, but an excellent guide!
Review: My boyfriend and I purchased this book for our trip to Kauai in Oct. 2001. This book was great for restaurants - we tried many and were very pleased! Beaches were great, as was the info on the farmer's markets. Overall, it was very helpful, but we used it in conjunction with Doughty & Friedman's 3rd edition of the Ultimate Kauai Guidebook.
