Summary: Horowitz Made My Vacation
Review: Anyone who travels to Kauai without this book will miss the best part of the island. I am not a fan of guidebooks, as I find them generally uninformative, but Horowitz never let me down. Her detailed descriptions of resturants and beaches were right on. Her recommended activities made every minute an exciting adventure.

Thank you, Horowitz's, you made Kauai my favorite vacation spot. I cannot wait to go back!

Summary: Great guidebook
Review: Someone gave me this book just before my third trip to Kauai. Since I have some friends on the North Shore, I asked them about it. They said it was their least favorite book since it was the one that gave away all the "secret" beaches and restaurants drawing tourists instead of locals. I thought that was a great endorsement.

In fact, we went to several beaches recommended and many of the restaurants. The descriptions and reviews were invariably accurate and candid. So many guidebooks seem like puff pieces for hotels and restaurants. This book never felt that way.

I also liked the fact that this author seems to be a regular in Kauai and not just a guidebook author who goes from place to place. Anyone who writes 15 editions of anything must be doing something right.

Summary: filled with wonderful advice and adventures
Review: This guide became our bible of travel on Kauai. What a great island. We would never have seen the true beauty of the island without this book as our tour guide. We never had a bad meal or experience when following the Horowitz'z advice. We were not alone-- we noticed it resting on the dashboard of many of the rental cars!

Summary: An essential item for any visitor to Kauai - fantastic !
Review: Travelling from London, we had no idea what to expect in the islands, this book enabled us to visit places we would otherwise have never known existed (Secret beach being the most special). It is well written in plain and honest terms and does not pull any punches. I cannot recommend it highly enough to any new visitor to Kauai and thank my lucky stars we found it when we did. It really made our honeymoon. It's like having a "friend in your pocket".

Summary: Great for beachgoers, lacking in "underground" items.
Review: I would first like to say that this book has some interesting notes about the history of Kauai. That is fine if you want to take the time to read them. I really feel that this book is good for families traveling with children. The book focuses mainly on beaches and dining. I did not see any indication of any of the items normally referred to as "Underground" which was disappointing. The information about various dining establishments was very helpful. The maps are nice but do not include mile markers. If added, these would increase the value of these colorful maps. Overall, I would rate this book as fair

Summary: Easy to use and family friendly
Review: This book's organization by region made it extremely easy to use in exploring the island. I found beaches that I wouldn't have visited otherwise--and I'll never forget how beautiful they are! The book helped me make the best use of my time with my kids (and even helped meet my sun-sensitive needs). The restaurant reviews are the best I ever found in a guidebook-- I always knew the special things to order on the menu and where to go for what I like to eat. Clear directions to the farmers' markets made me feel like I had a local friend. I also ordered flowers and fruit to ship home based on excellent recommendations. This book tells you what you really need to know--it's really special!

Summary: A "Must" for Families Visiting Kauai
Review: This was one of the most readable and enjoyable travel guides we have ever used. How many times have you tried to follow advice or directions in a guide, only to discover that a small omission or confusion has rendered the advice impossible to use or follow? It never happened with this book, which became our "bible" on our recent trip to Kauai. Clarity and simplicity are critical, especially to lazy tourists! Particularly refreshing was the honesty of her recommendations. Horowitz does not shrink from criticizing well-known attractions, which makes her praise of others all the more valuable. Best of all is the way she personalizes the book, with references to her own experiences with her own children. This is the perfect family guide to the island!

Summary: Poorly organized introduction to a beautiful island
Review: Although this book was written by someone with a great love of the island, I think a person would have a hard time forming an impression of the island from this book. More space is dedicated to restaurant reviews than to things to see and do. There is also no even brief background history of the island. Also this book has more exclamation marks than any book I have ever read in my life. After a while it becomes so tiresome when almost every sentence ends in an exclamation mark. Call me picky, but a book also has to be readable.

Summary: our Kauai bible
Review: The best thing we did was to buy this book before we went! We planned our whole vacation with it--and the suggestions saved us lots of money and time. We never would have found the beaches we loved (Larsen's and Mahaulepu) without it! The restaurant ideas were always reliable. This book is the best companion we could have had!

Summary: the best kind of advice
Review: Want to find a great hidden beach? This book tells you where to go! Want to find the best deal on lunch at a high priced place like Poipu Beach? This book tells you--AND tells you what the author and her family have tried on the menu, how they liked it, and the price too! The info is right on target, too. Since we have three kids--that info was essential! As were lots of other tips on what to do and how to do it as the best price! What a great find-- it made our vacation memorable!
