Summary: Not so awesome....
Review: I've been to Kauai a couple of times, and have used a bunch of different guides, and I feel pretty lukewarm about this book. First and foremost, there is nothing "underground" about it. It focuses primarily on beaches and restaurants-- and doesn't uncover anything special. There are no hidden gems, no special hikes, etc. Also, my main gripe is that the author presents _no_ opinions about the places she reviews (isn't that the purpose of a review?). Especially annoying in the restaurant section-- there was no evaluation of food, service, decor, etc. That said, however, the book did have blurbs about almost every restaurant we found.... so it was thorough. Review: I bought this book after I saw it reviewed in the Honolulu Advertiser, which said the book was "thorough, up to date--a mature, trusted sidekick for the visitor who wants to get to know the island well"--Honolulu Advertiser August, 1998. I could not agree more! The detailed beach and resturant descriptions were invaluable! It's really well researched and is obviously the product of years of family visits to Kauai. As a bonus- the music CD is great and helps to fund important children's charities on the island.

Summary: Wonderful Helpful Guidebook
Review: My husband andI just returned from a two week vacation to Kauai. This was our very first visit to the island. Thanks to this book, our vacation was ansolutely outstanding. WE used the book daily and thoroughly enjoyed the descriptions of the beaches and mountains as we toured the area. We visited many of the restaurants and found them to be as described. The book was extremely helpful and I would recommend it to all first time visitors and I will definitely use it on our next visit. Thanks so much.

Summary: personal opinions with photos and maps to direct your travel
Review: This guide book reviews only the places the author has experienced first hand. That honest appraisal means if you are dining at a place in which she only had breakfast, you won't know exactly what to expect but you understand that up front. Her children's likes and dislikes gives you the viewpoint of different age groups and interests. The maps were especially helpful as we used the guide constantly on a recent trip to Kauai. It was required to be in the car whenever we went exploring for it's directions to beaches, activities, and local advice. When we drove by a small, nondescript fish market (G's) we were looking for fresh fish. We quickly looked it up in the guide. It proved to be delicious, fresh and served by a very friendly owner as the Guide promised. We would never have discovered dozens of delights without the help of the Kauai Underground Guide.

Summary: THE guidebook for visiting Kauai
Review: Kauai Underground Guide gives a visitor to Kauai insight into how to plan your vacation on Kauai. Lenore gives descriptions which enable the reader to choose activities, beaches, dining, and accomodations which fit their style and budget. I am getting married in Kauai and I sent all my important guests a copy of this book. The CD is a nice little Hawaiian bonus!

Review: WONDERFUL! Simply a DELIGHT to read! Bonus CD makes a FABULOUS package- I LOVED the music. This book is the BEST as far as Kauai guidebooks go- nice pictures, lots of info, great tips, and clear maps. Don't miss this travel companion!

Summary: It was as vital to my Hawaiian vacation as my plane tickets.
Review: Lenore Horowitz's Underground Guide to Kauai made me feel like part of Kauai's family. Her detailed restaurant and beach descriptions gave me an accurate feel for the island and allowed me to plan my all-too-short stay. The unique sections on child safety and gorgeous color photos made the book useful and pretty to look at. I loved listening to the music on the Hawaiian music CD which is free with purchase. It takes me right back to the waves and sun. Simply a ten!

Review: We've been traveling to Kauai for years now, and always go with the latest edition of Ms. Horowitz's guide. It gives honest, up-to-date information and reviews, so you don't have to waste time on trial-and-error methods of choosing activities, restaurants, etc.

Summary: Forgot other books; this is THE best!
Review: If I could only take one thing on a trip to this fantastic island, it would be this book. The writer knows her subject well and conveys her knowledge effectively. Do yourself a favor and buy a copy a week or so before the start of your trip and meander through it. This volume is well worth its price
