The very way he describes the folks in this town and how they spoke are very native to true "Tar Heels". This book is one that you can't put down till the last word is read. Most Excellent in every way, from beginning to end!

I found it to be an easy, quick read however, I had figured out some of the plot early in the novel. I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys a sweet love story, rather it is love between a man and a woman or love between family members.

Rating: Summary: Terrific Novel of Love and Loss Review: Best-selling author Nicolas Sparks delivers once again in this heartwarming tale of tears and triumph. As a young widower, Miles Ryan finds little joy in life as a deputy sheriff in the small town of New Bern, North Carolina. Forced to raise his young son, Jonah, alone, Miles was devastated when two years prior, his wife Missy was killed in a hit and run auto accident. Because the killer was never found, Miles has never found closure as evidenced by the file he keeps on Missy's death. Life seems to improve for Miles when he meets Sarah Andrews, Jonah's new teacher. Though Sarah was hurt by her previous divorce, she sees Miles as someone she could trust. Miles and Sarah's attraction to one another is both gradual and realistic as they begin to emerge from their old fears and heartaches. In a heart wrenching and clever twist of fate, circumstances intervene and threaten to destroy this couple's newfound happiness. Emotions ride high as the reader is kept guessing until the last page is finished as to whether love can really overcome all. A BEND IN THE ROAD is a fine addition to a long list of previous best-selling novels. With memorable characters facing real life problems, readers will be reluctant to part with Miles and Sarah as their story comes to a gripping conclusion.
Rating: Summary: A BEND IN THE ROAD Review: Book Review A BEND IN THE ROAD Sometimes fate may cause an unimaginable situation, but then turn it into the best thing that happens in one's life. Along with these situations, one may also be faced with the difficult act of forgiveness. In 2001 Author Nicholas Sparks published a very powerful book; A Bend in the Road. After reading this realistic novel a person who hasn't experienced tragedy in their life may be able to understand the feelings of a person who has. Sparks displays an exceptional view of life by showing how one man endured both. The fate of Missy's death was an unthinkable tragedy in which Miles thought he would never recover. However, it was that fate that brought him and Sarah together. And in the end the difficult act of forgiveness was carried out when Miles accepted Brian's apology. He understood that though Brian did kill his wife, it was unintentional and he was remorseful. Thornhill 2 One could agree with Miles to forgive the killer. But is it possible to just forget about it? The book ended making one assume that Miles and Sarah pursued their relationship. But what happened between Miles and Brian? They all agreed to keep the secret amongst themselves, but how could that be done? The story should not have ended there. More could have been said about the relationship Miles had with both his new love and his wife's killer. Did he marry Sarah, and allow the murderer of his wife to become his brother-in-law? Other than that one shortcoming, the novel is truly great. Losing a loved one in a hit and run accident is devastating. Having the courage to enter another relationship unknowing what the future may hold is frightening. But how would someone explain their feelings after finding out their lover's brother is the murderer? Sparks did an eminent job showing the feelings of love, anger, and forgiveness in this must read novel.

Rating: Summary: unsatisfying ending Review: Brief summary: Miles Ryan is a deputy sheriff in a small North Carolina town. Two years earlier his wife was killed in a hit-and-run accident, and now he's raising their seven-year-old son alone. Sarah Andrews is the new teacher in town. She moved to town after a divorce, which occurred as a result of her infertility. Miles and Sarah fall in love, but problems arise when new information is found regarding the hit-and-run driver.
I *wanted* to like this book, but I had a difficult time doing that. I thought the characters were one-dimensional and had very little depth. The mystery portion of the book was easily solved (the backcover alone gave a huge clue). And I thought the ending was very unsatisfying. I've read reviews that have mentioned the book as being one about `forgiveness' and apparently I just totally missed that, because I didn't see any forgiveness. Just 16 pages prior to the end of the book Miles says, "You killed my wife. I'll never forgive you, and I'll never forget." And that attitude didn't change in the last 16 pages. In the epilogue, which occurred approximately ten years later, I got the impression that Miles is still hanging on to his anger. He starts out an angry man and ends up an angry man--there was no character growth at all. His anger is, to some extent, justified, but in my opinion, he's entirely too angry. Yes, there was a tragic accident. It had a huge affect on many lives. It's hard to let go of the people that you love. The `driver' should have reacted to the situation differently. But the bottom line is that it was in fact an *unavoidable accident*. And Miles seems totally unable to accept that fact. I would have liked to seen a different ending for Miles. The book was a disappointment for me, but clearly, I'm in the minority in that opinion :)
Rating: Summary: Wow Review: Compelling, and beautifully written. Such a mystery with the love of two people. I really liked this book, and most people will.
Rating: Summary: A Fork in the Road... Review: Do I dare read another Sparks novel for fear of disappointment or should I move on in another direction?? After reading The Rescue, I couldn't wait to start this one. While on vacation last week, I finished A Bend in the Road in a matter of days. I could not help but wonder if it was written in the same amount of time. Very boring dialog between the characters, their thoughts revealed by the author were shallow and predictable. I could not wait to get to the ending of this one. But, unlike other books I have read recently, my anxiety was NOT in order to see how everything came together and feel fulfilled, but to end the agony.
Rating: Summary: Beach Read Review: Entertaining feel-good beach novel, but not particularly well-written. The characters are all-American sicky sweet, and the writing is so simplistic that this book can be read in one day with time to spare. Not awful, but not a great work of literature. Predictable ending.
