Rating: Summary: enthralling and inspiring...the big thumbs UP! Review: I was honestly surprised by how well written this book is. I've not been very political in the past (recent events based on the hijacking of the Presidency by the Supreme Court changed all that) and am not a big student of politics (I'm a research scientist....and a woman to boot). But now I'm 3/4 of the way through this book and can't put it down. I'd put myself on the hold list at the local library and got one of the first copies in circulation. Now, I'm buying one for myself, one for my mother and one for my sister. Hillary is an inspiration to all women who aspire to make a difference. I do admit that I'm surpised by the negative comments made by others in this forum. It's so obvious to me that their agenda has nothing at all to do with this book. My suggestion: Put your personal politics aside and enjoy the insightful and cogent analysis of past events offered by a woman who was there.
Rating: Summary: You can't fool all the people all the time Review: It is amazing that a woman who is by far and away the most succesful cattle futures trader in history would cover her achievement with two dismisive paragraphs in her own autobiography. Here is a woman who, as a rookie, turned $1000 into $100,000 with a string of sophisticated trades, the odds on which were akin to winning the lottery multiple times in succession, making it seem like it was no big deal that she did what she did. Then, despite her apparent talent, she just quit...
Rating: Summary: A Badge of Courage Review: I would not vote for Hillary Clinton, but I can understand her participating in American enterprise when anything with her name on it is such a veritable gold mine. Wouldn't you do the same? (I also understood, for like reasons, why Gingrich wrote his book several years ago that he had to back away from as House Speaker). She was brave to dredge up the mud, that had nicely settled to the bottom of the feeding trough, so she could give her personal side of the story once and for all, based on her personal philosophy that is drawn from a lifetime of reading on philosophy and history, a good and easy background and understanding of which can be obtained by reading Remick's excellent "West Point: Character Leadership Education". Polemicists should not just slough off "Living History". It will prove to be important and pivotable, and, a book of record. Though no big fan of the Clinton's, I think Hillary deserves five stars as a badge of courage.
Rating: Summary: Ghost written, by BORING ghosts Review: This book is for die-hard Hillary fans only! It is not personable, its not interesting, its not charming, or warm. It is written like a history text book, not a memoir. This book is 500 pages of political spin doctoring, nothing more. I read...zzzzzzzzzzzzzz...after falling asleep often..zzzzzzzzzz...the whole thing, or at least I slept through the whole thing - and I still feel like I know NOTHING about Hillary or Bill. This book was written to launch Hillary's run for President. If you feel that you must try this book yourself, PLEASE don't waste your money like I did...borrow a copy; it will be the best [$$$] you ever saved.
Rating: Summary: My non-reader husband is enjoying this book Review: Between amazon and B&N, we have purchased and re-distributed around fourteen copies as gifts and loaners in our neighborhood. My non-reader husband is enjoying this book and has read further ahead than I have! I focused on the pictures and selected bits for the flavor thereto. I can see why the coulter crayola wit crowd is apoplectic...;> well written, clean and informative concerning the period HRC served as First Lady. Despite the multi-million funded barrage, she survived to serve as Senator. Yeah, Hillary! We are well served by this slice of life during the Scaife-Mellon-Starr onslaught so well financed by taxpayers wherein the public saw through the ploy and Clinton prevailed.
Rating: Summary: Whitewashing History Review: I wanted to like this book--I really did. I was so hoping for inside information or just explanations of why, when, and how events came down. But I came away feeling as if someone (and maybe it was the ghostwriter's fault) was just trying to brush away all the bad things. Her explanation of how she reacted to her husband's affair with Monica was just ludicruous. Hillary is known to have strong opinions, a quick temper, and a woman capable of dealing with anything life tosses her. Her explanation fell flat, flat, flat with me. If she ever chooses to rewrite the memoirs of the second half of her life, I hope she shows the real inside emotions--not something that just looks good on paper.
Rating: Summary: Read it before you criticize it Review: I found this book well written, and as described in the Amazon review, not full of huge secrets but very interesting. Those that do not like the Clintons might not enjoy the whole book because, of course, she talks about her political views. However, the book provides a lot of information about problems going on in the world that still need to be solved and discusses the First Lady's changing role in the White House. There are a lot of great anecdotes by Mrs. Clinton that include Jackie Kennedy, Richard Nixon, etc. For those that have read books about Mrs. Clinton or her husband before, this book provides answers not present in other books about how her views and decisions were shaped by childhood. I think you'll see in the first few chapters why she stayed with her husband after his affair even though it's barely referred to in the opening chapters. Anyone has any right to criticize this book. However, they need to read it before they post a one-star rating just because they don't like Mrs. Clinton.
Rating: Summary: ...it's great! Review: ...This is a fine book, eleoquently written by a brilliant lady who is not afraid to talk about the "speed bumps" in her life. With a comfortable yet scholarly writing style, Mrs. Clinton entertains and educates. Much healthier reading for the soul than the shrieking, apocalypitc howlings of Ann Coulter, Sean Hannity, or Bill O'Reilly. Treat yourself to a book by a visionary--Senator Hillary Clinton--rather than the right wing reactionaries. Visionaries build things, reactionaries only tear down. Our country would be a lot better off if we had more Hillary Clintons!
Rating: Summary: Brava, Senator Clinton! Review: Writing one's biography must be a daunting task- I found that this book was an excellent effort. In an enjoyably readable style, Mrs. Clinton is open about her education, experiences and certainly made it clear why she fell in love with a fellow Yale (both attending because of real merit) law student- a "young Viking" Rhodes scholar- what an extrordinary young couple they must have been. Senator Clinton is a superbly educated public figure- perhaps her intelligence, coupled with her level of education, is one of the reasons she is apparently so hated by the Right. Perhaps the negative remarks regarding this biography that I have heard on the radio and on cable news are due to envy of the fact that the author was able to write a book, much less one that was actually enjoyable. Certainly, Mrs. Clinton's account of the Clinton-Gore administration answered many questions that I was asking myself at the time and reinforced the impressions that I had formed. Her account of the Lewinsky scandal struck a note of dignity inspite of the fact that she was really quite candid- she let us know that this was a horribly painful experience and yet she had no need to hash out every single sordid detail. She manages to maintain her human dignity under circumstances which would try a saint. Mrs. Clinton's causes are well known: health care, children, education, women's rights. Her efforts to further her causes have been admirable and enviable; she gives a good accounting of herself. The appeal of this book is that most of us can empathize with this middle-class daughter, wife and mother. Her intelligence is obvious, but never patronizing. She shares her passions are, yet manages to avoid being cloying or false. She writes clearly and eloquently. Here is a seemingly ordinary woman (albeit with extrordinary gifts) thrown into a series of amazing situations- she survived, managed to retain her dignity and prosper. If this woman were running for President, I'd vote for her in a heartbeat.
Rating: Summary: Wonderful Book Review: A really insightful book from one of the most influential women in politics. A really good read.
