Rating: Summary: good fireside book Review: This book should be listed in the juvenile fiction section. The most dishonest and self-agrandizing bunk I've ever paged through. It's only redeeming quality is as kindling.
Rating: Summary: A Good Senator Review: LIVING HISTORY by Hillary Rodham Clinton I feel like I've waded thought a semester of current events history. Ms. Rodham Clinton gave this book the correct title. She covered her life before she met Bill Clinton, and Bill's (Mr. Clinton) life thoroughly after she met him. Then she writes about the two of them and their daughter, Chelsea, for the time that Bill was president of the USA. Again it's all there, including Bill's big 'unfaithful-to-his-wife' blunder during his term as an eight-year president. There is one thing one gets out of this book, her love for Bill Clinton. It shows on almost every page. She wrote about her life with Bill in Arkansas where he was the elected to the State Attorney General and later as Governor. Hillary Rodham spent a short time in Washington D. C. working on Nixon's impeachment and then to Arkansas. Her life in Arkansas was full as you would expect with teaching law for the Arkansas University and later went to work for the Rose Law Firm as an associate. I don't feel that I should mention Whitewater, but Hillary covered it thoroughly and it keeps showing up in this book. For all of you who are interested in Whitewater this book tells the story. Mr. Starr built it into something big, but it wasn't the money lost by Mr. Clinton that made the whole thing ridiculous for someone who was investigating him for money that he supposedly made illegally. It looks like someone was taking advantage of Mr. Clinton and Mrs. Clinton. They did not want to cause problems over such a small amount of money. Mr. Starr spent millions of the tax payer's money (our money) on investigating it trying to find something that President Clinton did that was illegal. One thing I am glad is that this book has a comprehensible index. I used it extensively while writing this review. Ms. Hillary Rodham Clinton is not a bad writer when she writes about the facts. But she must have the facts. That is what makes this book worth reading. And it is worth reading for Americans who are interested in the up front politics and the backroom maneuvering by the spin experts. There always seem to be a group of old-men millionaires watching the election who make a phone call or take action at the right time to try and effect things that want to happen. This may be where the reputation of dirty politics comes in. Maybe the action that they want is, in there mind to save our country, but it's dirty and they do not go with the vote except for what they want and believe their due. It can't be money, I guess it's power so that they know they effect the world. Ms. Hilary Clinton you are a good writer and I believe that you believe in what you write. May you be a good Senator and more than that, if that is what you want? You have paid your dues to politics, and learned a lot along the way.
Rating: Summary: An honest memoir by an extraordinary woman Review: I am truly puzzled by the reviewers who berate this woman for writing HER version of events SHE (not you) experienced firsthand. So she stayed with her husband. It was HER decision, and the pain she went through to arrive at it was evident in the book. Barbara Bush is complaining about the continual abuse her dear boy is taking from the Democrats now. Well, after hearing of the constant pursuit and harrassment of Bill Clinton all in one place, I don't think the Republicans should be pointing fingers. The road to Ken Starr's being appointed independent counsel, and his subsequent abuse of that power, not to mention the money it cost, with virtually no mention of Whitewater (you know, the deal he was supposed to be investigating) in his final report, and the publication of that report on the internet was truly repulsive. Hilary makes herself out to be nothing other than a strong woman with strong beliefs, who is willing to put herself out there to try and make a better place for her, her family and this country. Why are people so threatened by this? She adores her only child, who by all appearances, seems to have turned out to be a fine human being. And she has her parents to thank. Yes, Bill made some major errors as a person, but I'm sorry. In light of the condition of this country today, I think now, even more, that he was a terrific president, and this book illuminates his struggle to be one. A successful president must have MANY qualities to do the job, and the ability to not only co-exist with, but actually be liked by, other world leaders has to be chief among them today. Again, compared to what we now have, well, there is no comparison. Hilary's writing is entertaining, comes across as sincere, and having listened to the audio version, I intend to buy the book to get even more of the story.
Rating: Summary: Well worth reading Review: I really enjoyed this personal account. There is definitely more to the story, as she says herself, but amazing to think of everything she accomplished in such a short time. Whether you agree with her politics or not, hearing her version of the story is eye-opening. A good companion to Lies and the Lying Liars who Tell Them by Al Franken.
Rating: Summary: Well Done! Review: Well done. Regardless of political affiliation, I believe readers will come away from reading this book with a sense of admiration for the efforts made to improve our lives here at home and of those in need all around the world. Having read other reviews, I believe it to be ignorance that drives one to critize a citizen that is trying to make a positive difference in our lives. Tackling issues of healthcare, children rights, womens rights, and even venturing to far reaching corners of the globe to express the rights of all humans on the international front takes a lot of experience and courage. When was the last time you tried to tackle anything that would make a difference in someone elses lives but your own, without being paid for it? As we wrap up 2003, America, the richest nation on earth has; *+41 million citizens uninsured *+9 million citizens unemployeed *Preemptively struck and invaded a soverign nation, for the first time in US history, without any credible evidence against that nation *Has placed a serious strain on our relationship with peace loving nations around the world as we tried to push them into a conflict we could not credibly prove. *An immensely growing deficit, that we'll all have to pay for many years to come, due to the poor, and wreckless 'leadership' of the current US administration. So, if you would like a bit of escapism, to a time when the US, and her First Lady, worked for and won the admiration and respect of peace-loving nations, read this book... When a citizen, unselfishly, devoted her talent and time to help bring positive change to millions of the world's citizens, then read this book... But more importantly, if you'd just like to enjoy a good human story of an individual that has and continues to lead a facinating life, read this book!
Rating: Summary: A self-serving view of history Review: I have admired Ms. Clinton for her stand on womens' rights issues. However, this book was not only self-serving, it was boring. She chronicled in minute detail every trip she took, how people loved her, ad nauseum! She comes across as being so impressed with herself as a wife (her adoration of Bill was disgusting), a mother (Chelsea must be the most fantastic child ever to be born!) and a politician. Everything she had to say that would be of interest could have been covered in 50 pages. Dull, dull, dull.
Rating: Summary: Even better than I expected! Review: Very interesting book. If you're into politics, women's issues and the Democratic party, this book is for you (even a few Republicans friends of mine enjoyed this book)! Very well written. Baby boomers can relate to her childhood memories. Living History is a very apt title.
Rating: Summary: Dont waste you time Review: I bought this book when it first came out, hoping to read and learn about Hillary. Key word learn. This book tells you nothing new. It had nothing about the scandal. All it said was how bad of a person Ken Starr was. Dont waste your time reading!
Rating: Summary: An amazing book by an amazing woman Review: Someone once said to never buy an autobiography written by someone who is still alive because it tends to be boring. They were wrong. This book, though considered as a self-serving book by many right-wing extremists, is perhaps one most the most amazing books that came along. It gives first-eye views into the world of perhaps the second-most amazing woman on the planet. With humor, honestly and passion, Hillary Clinton describes her life from growing up in a Republican family in a small town, to becoming one of the most recognized and beloved person in the White House. Described in her books are the many adventures, learning experiences and coming-of-age realizations during her trip to the White House. Contained in the book, too, is the story of how she and Bill Clinton met. Perhaps one of the most romantic relationships ever started, this sheds new light on the romantic relationship of the Clinton. It allows us to see that it wasn't a relationship based on politics, but rather two people who are in love, and who share a common interest in making progress in the important areas of American politics -- pushing for acceptance, family values and human rights. For those who intend to buy this book because they want to read all the "dirt" on the Monica Lewinsky fiasco, don't bother. This book isn't about airing dirty landry for the American public to read. What it is, though, is also a description of the troubled times she and Mr. Clinton went through and how, because they loved each other, made it through. It probably isn't a "must-read" for any political junkie, but for any freedom loving Democrat, this book inspires and makes one realize there are still good, honest, patriotic politicians in America.
Rating: Summary: A handbook of deceit Review: Did we baby boomers think Richard Nixon was a crook? He was a saint compared to both Bill and Hillary! The silver lining: There is no possible way we can sink lower than the Clintons. To sum up this book in Jimmy Carter's own word, when he described the Clintons' behavior in their last days in The White House: DISGRACEFUL. And how.
