Rating: Summary: Kid takes over city! Review: If you liked Wringer or Space Station Seventh Grade, you'll like to read Maniac Magee. The story about a boy named Jeffery Lionel Magee [later called Maniac] whose parents died when a trolley fell off its track and plunged into the Schulkill River. Everyone on board drowned. Then Jeffery was sent to his aunt and uncle's house. He ran away because his aunt and uncle bickered a lot and he got sick of it. Then he travels 200 miles to Two Mills, Pennsylvania. He moves in with the Beales. A black family willing to take care of Jeffery. After running so fast, hitting the world's first "frogball", scoring 49 touchdowns when playing football with some high schoolers, Jeffery Magee's name was changed to Maniac Magee. Then Maniac moved around from house to house because he and Amanda Beale got into a fight. Then Maniac moves around from house to house in the East End to West End [in this book, blacks and whites are isolated. Blacks in the East End. Whites in the West End] My favorite part was when Russell and Piper tried to run away from home to Mexico, and Maniac tells them to stay home an extra week every week. This is a really good book. It is so good that there should be a movie retelling the story. Like The Indian in the Cupboard. I hope you will like it.

The aunt and uncle lives in a urban city so maniac lives on a line where the blacks are sepreartaed from the whites. The boy meets friends in this story and a good ending that will shock you. The exciting event that I enjoyed was when , Maniac moved in with a girl she knew from school, because her aunt and uncle fight. Rating: Summary: A WONDERFUL book for all ages! Review: East end; west end; black; white; Jeffrey Magee does not understand it. After his parents die in a trolley accident, Jeffrey is pretty much on his own. All that this 12-year-old wants is an address where he can look outside and I say "I live here," "This is my home." He begins by running from his problems. He runs and runs, even though he knows that there will be more problems up ahead. Soon he adopts himself into a loving black family living in the east end. . . the black end. Not for a moment does he ever consider himself any different from these "chocolate skinned" people. To him, his white skin means little more to anyone than the fact that he has brown hair. As he begins to bond with his family and many of the black children in the neighborhood, Jeffrey soon becomes very well known in the east end because of his bizarre talents. Now being known as "maniac" rather than Jeffrey, he is glad that finally he has a wonderful family and a good reputation in the east end, but this glee does not last very long. As he becomes more well known, some people in the east end notice him- but for very wrong reasons. Before he knows it, Maniac is being overwhelmed with people who question his belonging in their black neighborhoods. So what does Maniac do? He runs. He runs to the west end- to the east end- and back and forth. He adopts himself into many families, some black and some white; yet it makes no difference to Maniac. As he moves around, he brings with him a special voice and leaves with each family something special which, he knows, they will probably not understand for a long time. As he travels he soon learns about love, and about hatred. He realizes the stupidity, the ignorance, and the superstitions that are growing. He soon feels torn between his love for all people- black and white, and the prejudice that haunts him every day. Yet he holds firm to his dream of peace. Just as Martin Luther King, Jr. said: "I have a dream that one day my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character."This is quite the same dream that Maniac had. In some ways, Maniac realizes before anybody else that time is running out and it is up to him to put an end to this hatred. He cannot run away from it this time. I am reminded of the saying "stand up for what you believe in, even if you stand alone." Jeffery Magee has such courage that he begins a quest to end the racism that surrounds him. Maniac unites two strangers; one black; one white, each taught to hate each other. He unites them in a situation where they need each other in order to survive. Thanks to a scrawny 12-year-old kid, when it is all over people both black and white realize the huge mistake that they have made.

In conclusion this book is really good.
Rating: Summary: Excellent Book!!!!!!!! Review: This was an excellent book that went into a lot of detail. It talked a lot about racism though.
Rating: Summary: A modern-day "Huckleberry Finn" Review: Orphaned boy, active and adventurous, lives on the fringe of society and sleeps outdoors; he makes various friends across racial and class lines; has dangerous adventures, behaves according to intrinsic, unlearned core values, and finds his way back into the safety of society -- HEY! Haven't we read this before? Yes, it was Twain's "Huckleberry Finn!" Teachers, do not fear: the n-word is not used. This is a book 6th-grade boys like, and it's a book from which they can learn.
Rating: Summary: Aorphan boy learns to survive in the real world. Review: Magee is a boy whose parents died when he was an infant. After the funeral, he was sent to live with his aunt and uncle. Magee is not his full name but there was no one to stop him from changing his name from Jeffery Lion to Maniac Magee. As the years went by, Magee became a legend in his home town on Hector Street. Over the years Magee has met some wonderful friends. A girl named Amanda was on her way to school and was carrying a suitcase. When Magee saw her, he thought that was kind of different so he went to talk to her. And then there was Grason, Magee's best friend, the man who taught him to read. Soon Magee started to wonder if he needed a family, Maybe he will go to live with Amanda and her family. I liked this story because it does not take place in only one setting.
Rating: Summary: Serious! Review: This story was really serious. Some of the parts were funny like the part when Maniac went into the shower and his second mother said that he had chicken pox! They first thought it was pepperoni because he had that for dinner. He ended up allergic to pizza!
