Rating: Summary: This book is great Review: The characters were quite interesting. Despite the lenght of the book, it reads rather quickly.
Rating: Summary: Great!!!! Review: This is the best book I have read in years. I am a person who takes months to read even the shortest book and I read this in a bout a week. The characters were facinating. I read one persons comment that it made too many disjointed turns and they felt that was unrealistic. In my oppinon this was what made it real. Life rarely takes the path we would like. Just when you think you have it all figured out, somthing unbelivable and unexpected gets thrown in your face. I loved Watching all of these people try desperatly to decided what to do next. I would agree that some of the translations of the Grandfathers story became frustrating to read, but it was the sticking it out that made the ending a reward. Yes it was just a bit cheesey, but would anybody really be more satisfied if everyone was just miserable? I think Not.
Rating: Summary: Outstanding, I couldn't put it down. Review: I thought the story was very well developed. The lenght of the book only allows the reader to become intimately involved with the characters. The only part that I felt got in the way of the overall story at times, was the grandfather's story, it could have been a bit shorter.
Rating: Summary: Excellent, book kept me curious & intrigued the whole time Review: I read this book while on vacation, I was so interested in this story and the sub-plots inside this story. Of course a good ending always makes the reader have a nice feeling, and this ending was wonderful! A recommend this book to the deeper reader.
Rating: Summary: Pay attention to the tone of the author's writing. Review: Wally Lamb does an excellent job at grabbing the reader's attention right from the beginning. The narrator grows throughout the book. The amazing part is how the tone of the writing evolves with the character. When the book ends you feel like you accomplished as much as the character, because you were so completely drawn into the story. I did not think Wally Lamb could out do his book "She's Come Undone." I know this much is true, he gets better each time I read him.
Rating: Summary: Gripping and true to life account of mental illness Review: I thoroughly enjoyed this book because it was so breath-takingly honest and so close to the reality of living or being close to someone with this mental illness and how it effects your own life and thinking. As someone who has had to deal with this first hand - this hits very close to home. I think Mr. Lamb is a wonderful writer and his other book "She's Come Undone" was written just as gripping and wonderful as well.
Rating: Summary: Wally Lamb enters through words and embeds into your soul. Review: Mr. Lamb's most recent novel is one for the ages. After discovering him through his first work, "She's Come Undone", I was anxious to see if he could produce such profound emotions onto paper again, and he did ten times my expectations. His ability to provide Dominick such a painstakingly real character is a true find in the age of authors rushing through and leaving the reader know closer to the character than when you started reading. It's true the 900-plus length is a bit frightening and even I struggled in the first 200 pages, but once the story played out, I was racing to the end to see how Dominick persevered and because of his struggle, became a better man. Kudos to you Mr. Lamb, I only hope your next novel is as heartwarming and embedding.
Rating: Summary: This book reminds me of J. D. Salinger's writing Review: Does anyone else feel this similarity with these authors? Also, for all the problems the characters must face, I find myself laughing at his comments and observations. He has a great sense of humor!
Rating: Summary: the most compelling novel i have read in a long time Review: I thought I had read quite a few good novels over the last few months but Lamb's masterpiece here blew everything else away. Don't be intimidated by the page count--you'll wish it was longer by the time you're through because of the wonderful writing this book offers
Rating: Summary: Hauntingly beautiful Review: This book is positively one of the most stunning, memorable, frightening, profound novels of the 20th century. Please do not let the 900 page length scare you. You will NOT regret reading this book. I would give it 6 stars if I could.
