Rating: Summary: Touching... felt like I was right there with him Review: I walked side by side with Dominick Birdsey from start to finish. Through the ups and downs, you cheer him on and you sympathize with him. I wanted to hug him and tell him it is going to be okay. Wally Lamb has an extraordinary brilliance in his words that colors page after page, makes you feel for all the characters but Dominick most of all. This book touched my heart and I am beginning to appreciate my father in a way I never thought possible. Lamb's smooth transitions from past to present keep you intrigued and you won't be able to let it go. I felt connected to the story told here and wanted to learn more. It says something about how valued family history is and should be. This book is one that will stay with me forever. I still can't believe I actually picked up, read, and finished a 900 page book. (Thank you Wally Lamb and Oprah.)
Rating: Summary: The most capitivating and enthralling books in recent years Review: At first the length of this novel was slightly intimidating. However, once I started reading about this family, and one man's search for his identity, I could not put it down. I highly recommend this book to all those who enjoy reading about true people, true emotions, and true heros.
Rating: Summary: not a big reader, but.... Review: Wow. I'm not a heavy reader, but I simply couldn't put the book down. As someone who's very interested in the social and interfamily aspects of mental illness, I thought this book was *very* well written and all the characters were really very well developed. You really do start feeling bad for Thomas (and Dominick too) before long...
Rating: Summary: a book that moved me from beginning to end Review: once I started I couldn't put it down.Lamb's characters come to life and it feels as if at some point the author himself was carried away by the plot and the charcters.
Rating: Summary: a brilliant ,emotional, heartfelt ,complex novel Review: this novel makes you care about the characters, whether you love them or hate them, in a way i've never seen before. it is complex and brilliantly written. it is a novel that once read will not quickly be forgotten.
Rating: Summary: Don't let the size stop you from reading this wonderful book Review: I hesitated to read this book because I am a student of literature and the semester was starting. It is, after all, 900 pages! But I am so glad I did. You don't read this book, you live it. The prose is beautifully written and yet very real. The main characters are so great, you love them and hate them. Thomas is a wonderfully true sketch of a schizophnrenic, and the trip through their lives makes him so much more. He is a person, as we realize all schizophrenic people are, and the reality of this is very moving. Not only are we given a chance to see through the life of Thomas, but also the effects of his disease on his family and the people in the town where they live. It is a true look at the system of mental health care, also, and a wonderful look at the relationship between twins. All in all, it was well done.
Rating: Summary: Take it from an avid reader, this is one of the best! Review: I finished this book yesterday after almost two days of non-stop reading. It brought tears to my eyes at several points throughout, and I cried out loud at the end. Life is hard, and those who try to come to grips with motives, conscience, and their own weaknesses can have the hardest journey. I could relate to the pain Dominick experienced, but this story did not leave you feeling that he landed up a victim, but an overcomer. Although there were sad situations resolved by death, for the most part, this was a joyful book with a happy and optimistic, yet believable, ending. Forgiveness must be given before life can be experienced to its fullest. It is one of the great joys in life when you find an author who has the ability to touch your heart. The pleasure has been mine. Thank you, Mr. Lamb.
Rating: Summary: This is the best book I've ever read. Review: This is truly the best book I've ever read. The characters are so realistic and well-developed. Wally Lamb is one of the finest contemporary authors. I couldn't put down this novel until I finished it--so I just stopped reading for my classes for a few days!
Rating: Summary: Minus the ending, the best book ever written. Review: I fell in love with this book almost immediatly. It captivated me with it's great style and form. The storyline was also excellent. Wally Lamb shows that he is a true genius. The only part I did not like is how quickly evrything came together at the end. I felt it needed at least a couple hundred more pages. I recommend everyone to read this book.
Rating: Summary: Don't let the size put you off - it's sooo worth it! Review: I could not put it down - finished it in four days. I saw one of my brothers in Domanick, and if I thought he would read it, I would send him a copy. The good thing is, Dominick "gets it". My brother would not. Very good book.
