Summary: SAD BUT TRUE
Review: The fact that my brother-in-law of 3 years (he is 45 years old) is a paranoid schizophrenic attracted me to the book. Mr. Lamb obviously did his homework. There were so many simularities that it made my skin crawl. Anyone who is not familiar with schizophrenia and is interested should read this book. I have actually lived parts of this book and it is scary.

Summary: This is a 900 page miracle of psychology and literature
Review: Do not be daunted by its magnitude. This book is the best I've read in many years. The reader gets a rare chance to look into a man's heart and soul. Lamb writes a compelling story that becomes as complex as the man we get to know but never understand. I've recommended this book to everyone I know.

Summary: Long, but worth the read
Review: When I finally was the lucky recipient of getting this book after four months of reserve at my library, I started the book with a feeling of trepidation that this seemingly interminable book would be 898 pages of dullness. Instead, I was totally engrossed of the story of Dominick Birdsey, a 40 year-old housepainter. Except for the revealing excerpts of his grandfather's autobiography, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and most definitely recommend it.

Summary: One of the most intense, wonderful books I've ever read.
Review: I found Mr. Lamb's journey inside the psyche of Dominick Birdsey to be absolutely wonderful. The way the story unfolded, and the things that happened to Dominick and Thomas made it difficult to ever put down. The intensity of what I was reading often made me stop, pause and catch my breath before I could go on. But I will say, I never read a 900 page book as quickly as this one. It's a real page turner. Thank you Mr. Lamb for another wonderful book. It is incredibly well researched and beautifully written.

Summary: Why ruin it for us?
Review: On January 14, 1999 a person from Wilmington, NC wrote a negative review and I believe told the ending. I sure hope not, although now I feel so disappointed. I had just started the book and was adoring it, and usually like to read these reviews for added interest. Surely it seems one can review a work without ruining it for others. May hurricanes rain...

Summary: Fantastic
Review: This was the best book I read in 1998. I could not put it down. Lost sleep reading this one. A very dramatic story...very real. It is fiction that feels like non-fiction. Loved this book. Also liked She's Come Undone by Wally Lamb. Can't wait for his next novel. Hurry please. A fan!

Summary: This is THE best book in a long time....
Review: The way Wally Lamb structures the story, gradually introducing all the characters and then slowly revealing each of their personalities, history, pain and life's experiences is perfectly done! I can almost hear Papa speaking in his Sicilian accent. I enjoyed every single 897 pages. Bravo! Christine D. Betts

Summary: Absolutely AWESOME!!
Review: Wow! What a crazy ride. I started this book Friday night, finished (in tears) on Tuesday afternoon. I'm not sure I've ever felt so connected to the characters in a book before--total empathy, and hopefully some insights into my own past. Don't be intimated by the length--I would have read on for another 900 pages! Can't wait to see what Mr. Lamb produces next.
