Summary: Great Audio-Cassette Experience with Motherly Love!
Review: Suzanne's Diary for Nicholas is a story within a story. The bulk of the book is a diary written by a mother for her new-born son. She explains how she met her husband, how they fell in love, what the pregnancy was like, and recounts her reactions to the life of young Nicholas. This part of the book works beautifully. I think the concept is a brilliant one, and I hope that parents who read this book will create such diaries for their children. The reading by Becky Ann Baker is moving, and brings these experiences to life in a wonderful way!

The external story doesn't work nearly as well. Katie Wilkinson has fallen in love and is pregnant by a mysterious poet from Martha's Vineyard. Just when it looks like marriage is in the cards, he flees. The next morning, she finds the diary along with a note that it may be hurtful to read the diary. She cannot figure out what the message of the diary is until the very end. This story's superstructure just dilutes the beauty of the story in the diary.

Mr. Patterson does one thing that I consider unforgiveable in a novelist: He deliberately shows off how easily he can mislead the reader . . . to me it felt sort of like him sticking his tongue out at you to establish his superiority over you. As one of several examples I could cite, Suzanne comes to Martha's Vineyard and runs into an old friend, Matt. In other places, she describes the baby's father as Matt. Naturally, many would assume that it is this old friend. No, it is someone else. The first Matt is in the story only for that purpose. Now, really! The most annoying example of this showing off was giving Suzanne a very extreme and unusual heart condition just so Mr. Patterson could create a tricky ending in the diary.

I would not normally complain so much about this sort of flaw, but these sleight-of-hand sections seriously degrade what is otherwise a very lyrical and well-written book.

After you finish reading this book, think about who else you could write a diary for . . . and then do it!

Share your feelings with those you care about!

Summary: too sticky sweet
Review: A quick read- but I could've gagged on the sweetness- this is my first James Patterson book- I know that this is not the norm for him. Good thing.

Summary: amazing...
Review: James Patterson can truly change his style of writing and this is not an exception. Suzanne's Diary for Nicholas is a tale of love, sadness, hope... I recommend this to anyone.

Summary: A Great Change of Pace
Review: James Patterson, the superb suspense writer, totally changed his writing perspective with SUZANNE'S DIARY FOR NICHOLAS. Patterson, known for his heart-pounding thrilling novels, will make your heart pound in a different way with this sensitive love story.

Katie Wilkinson is dumped by her boyfriend, Matt. He leaves her a gift, a diary that was kept by his first wife, Suzanne, for their son, Nicholas. Katie, not having the heart to destroy the handwritten book, begins to read the diary, against all of her better intuisions.

While reading, Katie gets to know the intimate and personal feelings of Suzanne, Matt, and their infant son, Nicholas. Katie becomes a piece of the background, viewing their lives and noticing the love and devotion between them. Katie learns a great deal more about Matt, increasing her own personal wisdom and renovating her heart.

Patterson's writing is, as always, very clear and cohesive, and he does an admirable job of mixing the laughter with the sadness in this very poignant love story. SUZANNE'S DIARY FOR NICHOLAS is a well-calcualted, fast-paced novel that is one entertaining read. This is highly recommended reading.

Summary: James Patterson should stick with what he knows best.
Review: I was excited to read this book after hearing all the hype about it, but now that I've finished it all I can say is "Don't waste your time!". This book is very amatuer, predictable, boring, and nauseatingly "sweet", so much so that it's almost fake. The way that it's written and the phrases used makes it sound as if a 15 year old wrote it about her first crush. I figured out the ending after about page 30, and spent the rest of the book wishing that he would just get it over with already. A very very disappointing read.

Summary: Very Captivating!
Review: I just finished reading the book in one sitting! I could not put it down. This was the second book from J.Patterson that I read and it was just great. He is a great storyteller... thoroughly building toward his surprising climax. Very well written... And, as expected, unexpected! A must read for all readers!

Summary: sappy beyond belief
Review: It must be my age,but I know no men like Matthew and quite frankly I am glad I don't. I love sensitive men but this guy is just too much. I also figured out the book by the second chapter. I read it all for a bookgroup discussion; out of 30 of us ,of ages 20 thru 78, only one liked it and she was 20.I was also thouroughly sick of poor Susannah and could not believe she'd write love scenes for her son to read later. Not many people want to know about their parents' love life. I love my children immensely but would never gush over them as she and Matt did. I am assured by my sons, both of whom were suckered into reading this book also, that they were glad I was "normal". Oh well, to each his own. I am glad James P. s getting some good reviews for his new genre. I do enjoy most of his work.

Summary: James Patterson writes a love story
Review: Who would have thought that James Patterson, author of suspense driven books featuring the psychologist/detective Alex Cross, would or could write a love story. I guess like many others I approached this book with a certain amount of skepticism. All the same I just had to read James Patterson's newest book, Suzanne's Diary for Nicholas. And if I was skeptical, I must now admit that it was a perfect read for a two hour flight this past week. I found myself gulping down this book, wanting to find out what happened to Suzanne, Nicholas, Matthew and Katie. I came to feel as though I knew these characters well and also their love stories. While reading this book, I did find it a bit sappy in the grand tradition of Bridges of Madison County which Patterson mentions in his book, but I also found myself shedding tears towards the end of the book and applauding the happily ever ending for at least two of the characters. And ever the master of suspense, Patterson even manages to provide a bit of a twist in his love story.

Readers who enjoy tear jerker books will certainly enjoy this book. But don't expect great writing. Patterson's choice of words and use of grammar leave something to be desired but then again if you're reading a book while flying or vacationing at the beach, this one is perfect.

Summary: Entertaining and Fast Paced
Review: I am a huge fan of James Patterson, I've read all the Alex Cross novels, so when I heard about this book I was of course interested. This book is very very different from anything I've read of his, for this I admire him. Not many writers are willing to take a chance and writer something new. This book is good in many ways, it's easy to read, it's a quick read, and it's entertaining. It has an orignal storyline for the most part and it's told in a interesting fashion, using a diary and reading that diary through the eyes of Katie, the girlfriend finding out about her boyfriend's past. For all of these qualities I gave this book 4 stars... But I agree with many other reviewers that there could have been more depth and you didn't get to know very many of the characters very well besides Suzanne who basically tells the whole story. The book had a good set up and then didn't completely follow through. I feel Patterson could have spent a little more time and given us a longer, stronger and more powerful novel... But then again I'm not sure that is what he was going for, that is why my rating is higher. This book is nice, it's a good story that has some sappy parts and some teary parts and it pulls together as an entertaining read. But if you want lots of depth don't read it, or if you are expecting anything close to his other work, don't read it. He's best at thrillers and I await the next Cross book.
