Rating: Summary: This book is not good for children... Review: Speaking as an English teacher who fights bad grammar habits daily, I say this book is not fit for small children. It is only fit for older children who have a firm hold on grammar and will not be affected by "She don't" and "I thinked" sort of phrases. Truly, the grammar errors in these books nauseate me because they imply that children are simply stupid and incapable of good grammar.
Rating: Summary: I'm sorry, but I just don't get it... Review: This is apparently a minority opinion, but I think these books are horrible for children in the 1st or 2nd grade. Schools seem to love them - is there some special highly-technical educational matrix that this junk fits into that I need a degree in education to understand? My 1st-grade daughter reads everything, and on her second day her teacher recommended "The Dirty, Smelly Bus". We read it together, and I had to stop every other sentence and talk about how we don't call people stupid, how we don't judge others by the fact that you can beat them up, how you don't deal with being afraid by calling everyone names and hitting them, and how you don't go rummaging through other people's belongings and taking whatever you want. It's ridiculous. Not only is this behavior normal for the title character, there are no negative repercussions - it's considered "cute"!!. Perhaps the point is to get parents to spend time teaching kids how not to behave - but we get enough of that from real-life. There will be plenty of time for our children to become discriminating readers who know when they're reading a fun book - but at this age,at this stage, they are learning how to behave around others. When these books are encouraged by adults, a 1st-grader can't be blamed for thinking this is encouraged behavior. I think it's disingenuous for the literary review to flippantly say "don't try this grammar at home!" -- there's much worse in here than bad grammar for children of this age. Save the books for older readers, when they can actually understand the joke. Avoid the incorrect assumption that many adults (myself included at times)sometimes make that their young children have a higher level of sophistication than they really do.
Rating: Summary: A saving Grace! Review: This collection of stories was the only thing that kept my sanity during a 9 hour car trip with 4 kids under the age of 8 in the back! We all laughed out loud at Junie B's antics and even I couldn't wait to hear what happens next. Sometimes we would take a break from the tapes and my oldest would read some outloud but these have definatly become a staple for long car trips!!
Rating: Summary: defending Junie B Review: Yes, Junie B has her grammar issues and even behavior issues. But so do some of the most engaging heroes in children's literature (Huck Finn, Curious George, Peter Rabbit. . .) Children who follow Junie's exploits are thrilled and entertained and see the consequences of her bad decisions. Junie is good clean fun for little ones.
Rating: Summary: A poor choice for kids Review: I am appalled at the terrible grammar in these books! "Me and her"??? What do you say to your child when she uses this hideous grammar and says that it's okay because Junie B. speaks this way? Young children (and even some adults!) think that because it is in a book that it is "okay" to use this bad grammar. Add the bad grammar to the main character's rudeness, lack of manners and overall poor behavior and you've got a minefield of bad examples.
Rating: Summary: Poor selections for beginning readers! Review: Poor grammar is only one of the shortcomings of these books. Junie B. Jones has a bad attitude, poor manners, and gives negative messages to young children. Perhaps this is 'entertaining' for some young readers and adults, but they are not lessons I would care to pass on to my children!
Rating: Summary: Four GREAT Books Review: ***I have read each of these books, they will make you laugh so hard that an unidentified liqud will come out of your nose!(That happened to me!) Junie B.is always up to something, this time she gets in BIG trouble!I would recumend these books to any child over 5, if not, your mom or dad can read to you. These books are are the best books ever! I hope you enjoy these books as much as I did.***
Rating: Summary: Delightful! Review: My 5 year old daughter loves these books. They are easy enough that she can read them herself, but also enjoys when I read them to her as a bedtime story. Junie B. Jones is a delightfully spirited child and I enjoy the stories as much as my daughter!
Rating: Summary: Junie B. Jones Boxed Set Review: ... Everything is described as STUPID and DUMP. My husband started reading these books to our 2 young daughters. He kept having to change and correct the story. I don't want them describing everything as stupid and dumb!! The grammar is poor and it sets a bad example to young readers. What a disappointment.
Rating: Summary: Kids love her! Review: My kids love Junie B.! I think Junie B. has an "attitude" in general and the books don't necessarily teach proper grammer. I guess the whole point of buying your kids books is to get them interested in reading. A lot of books for the money! My daughter wants more Junie B. so I guess they are a Hit!
