Rating: Summary: A delightful series Review: I bought a bunch of books for my daughter (age 6) to read, and she likes the Junie B. Jones series best. She laughs out loud as she reads and is totally engrossed in the story. The events in the Junie B. Jones series are typical things that young children either directly encounter in their daily lives or fantasize encountering (such as being left behind by a school bus). Some of them may seem mundane to grown-ups, but full of excitement, suspense and breathless anticipation for young readers. Junie B. Jones is a spirited girl with a unique, creative, and humorous view of the world around her. She may first come across as opinionated (as most 5, 6 year olds are), but one quickly discovers the "loopholes" in her opinions. My daughter frequently points out, with a laugh, what Junie B. Jones says wrong or how she mis-interpretes a situation. The stories end well and in a joyful and high spirited note. I highly recommend this series!

Rating: Summary: I will never buy another JBJ Review: Junie B. Jones is the worst children's reading material I have ever read. I was appauled at this horrible monster of a child. I know of NO 5 year old who speaks so poorly to the point it appears she is just unintelligent. Promoting bad behavior and poor speech skills is NOT funny NOR entertaining. After my daughter, age 7, read 4 of these books, we had a negative behavior nightmare with her. She got this from the books. Such as; calling names, saying she hates someone, speaking well under her ability, showing disrespect to adults, just downright obnoxious. Ask me where the books went???? My daughter is back to her old self and I am in search of reading material that doesn't teach a child how to be an illiterate brat, who needs her butt kicked.
Rating: Summary: Wonderful Books for Anyone with a Sense of Humor Review: These books are terrific for kids in a wide range of ages--mine are 3, 5, and 8, and they all love them. Don't be put off by those who don't get the humor. Junie B's outlook is definitely offbeat but in a funny, even joyful, way. And her creative grammar makes kids laugh while actually helping them think about correct word usage. (Mine love to shout out "She means 'thought,' not 'thinked'!") Amazingly, the audiobooks are even better than the print versions. Lana Quintal, whose child-like voice seems a little grating at first, stands up incredibly well to repeat (and repeat and repeat) listening. She gets the tone just right. My kids are happy listening to these tapes in the car even on those long journeys that are usually occasion for hours of complaining. Worth gold!
Rating: Summary: atrocious grammar Review: My first grade daughter just received a boxed set of Junie B. books from a Scholastic Press book order. I purchased them at her insistence that these "books are great"(they have them in her class at school), having no prior experience myself with the series. When I opened them up at random and started reading, I was appalled at the poor grammar on almost every page. While I recognize that the books are written in a childs voice, and are meant to relate to young children, I still find the grammar in them atrocius. Overall the books are very disappointing. I would not recommend these to anyone. Is this the best we can offer to young readers who are learning to speak, read and write correctly???????
Rating: Summary: Great Books Written From A Child's Perspective Review: Junie B. is a sassy little girl with a great sense of humor. The author's use of children's grammar only makes it that much more funny to children and adults alike. These books are a great way to get kids engaged in the fun of reading. My daughter read one and then wanted to read them all!
Rating: Summary: Appalling Review: My daughter just started kindergarten last week and was very excited to get a set of books about a kindergartener. Because of her excitement level, I read to her the first book ("Stupid Smelly Schoolbus") without "pre-reading." I was shocked. What author could be proud of creating a whining, hateful, disobedient, tantrum-throwing five-year-old who is surounded by enabling or disengaged adults??? The book has terrible role models of all ages and, frankly, not one redeeming character. By the third chapter, my daughter asked me why no one in the book was happy or liked what they were doing. I was writhing internally about the sad commentary the book was making, probably unintentionally, about the state of American youth. In one passage, Junie B. -- the five year old!! -- characterizes school as a place where you have to sit at tables and cannot watch television. Also, as other reviewers have noted, the grammar is truly atrocious. I think it is pathetic that some would defend it on the grounds that it may make other five-year-olds feel superior. I don't want my children looking down to feel good about themselves. It all may be a joke, of course, but so is some of the most hurtful and harmful speech. This boxed set is going in the trash, where it belongs.
Rating: Summary: Follow-Up Review... Just A Few Comments Review: I've just writen a review for Junie B., and afterwards I read some of the other reviews... I have to agree that Junie B. Jones' grammar is not the best, but I feel obligated as a fan to defend her for a moment... Junie B. is in kindergarten, and I believe the books are writen with poor grammar because they are supposed to be told from a kindergartener's point-of-view, where as the Ramona stories, for example, were writen about Ramona and therefore it would be incorrect for these to be writen in a kindergartener's grammar. The stories of Junie B. are meant to be writen in "poor" grammar because they are supposed to sound like they are being told by a kindergartener. I think that most children who read these books will be able to distinguish between how they should talk and how Junie B. talks. I do understand the parent's feelings about this book and why they want to correct it. I think that they may be missing the point of it, though... That it is purely fun, not educational. I hope this book can be enjoyed, even if there are some mixed feelings about the grammar. I still give it five stars, and I highly recommend it!
Rating: Summary: Barbara Park continues to score with Junie B. Jones! Review: Wow! I can't tell you how much I love these books. My daughter just left Kindergarten, where her teacher read several of these books to her class. My daughter got hooked, and consequently, so did our whole family. I found my 14 year old son and my husband were sitting in and listening while I read these to my daughter, and all of us exploding with laughter over Junie B."s antics and malapropisms. Having just been a constant helper in my daughter's Kindergarten class, I can say for sure that Barbara Park writes her books from real life! I can say that I'm glad that my daughter wasn't the Junie B. of her class, but there sure were kids that fit the bill to a T!! A must for kindergarten through 2nd to 3rd graders. Keep up the good work, Barbara! These books will be keepers for my grandchildren!
Rating: Summary: Motivation in the Classroom Review: This series is a runaway hit, which explains why there are so many of them! This series is a must have for any primary (kindergarten-third grade) classroom. Junie B. Jones' kindergarten grammar defines her impatient, excited, five year old personality. I loved reading these books aloud to primary students. They lend themselves to fast speech, a foot stomp of impatience, and expressive reading for those who enjoy reading aloud. I would only need to read one Junie B. Jones book to first or second graders, and the rest would jump off of the classroom shelves. I would have to ask students to take copies out of their desks if I wanted to read another one aloud to the class. Students don't take Junie B. Jones' personality or misadventures seriously. They are wonderfully wacky and entertaining to a child's mind. What IS serious is that these books get young students eager to read chapter books. I have seen many first graders choose Junie B. Jones as their first chapter books. My students and I loved these books so much that classroom copies became worn, and I am now purchasing new copies for my personal collection. If your child has Junie B. Jones books that they enjoyed and have outgrown, make sure they don't want to keep them, then, pass them along to a primary teacher!
