Rating: Summary: What was that??? Review: This was the first book I read from Mr. Dickey, and was very dissapointed by it. With all the explicit, intimate (not to mention unnecessary) details, I thought I was reading an excerpt from Cosmopolitan. I definitely won't read anything from Mr. Dickey again.
Rating: Summary: Should've came betta... Review: I absolutely loved Cheaters, thus when i found out that he had another book coming out I purchased it the first week it hit the book stores. All I have to say is WHY WHY WHY WHY...WHY did I waste my time anticipating LIARS GAME, and why was I disappointed.
Rating: Summary: What happens when a relationship stars with lies and deceit? Review: Can a foundation be firmly built if both parties are insecure and choose to cover up their past in order to start at a false ground zero? In the pages of Liar's Game, Eric Jerome Dickey's characters Vince and Dana come alive to answer these questions with much depth and complexity. Dickey gives the reader a wild ride through the relationship cycle, starting with a chance meeting and choices to keep covered dormant but not dead histories. Vince is a hardworking brother who has a few skeletons in his closet, an ex-wife a child and an ex-life, ("love at first sight, competition, conquest, contempt,")but none so terrible that they would be deterrents to a true sister. Dana is a New York native with a history of street feet and an elusive demeanor that is merely a false bravado to mask her own padlocked anxiety closet. Together they make passionate love, good conversation, and tumble into a tangled web that includes as much mystery as it does deceit. Vince is more grounded because of his historical and filial ties to Los Angeles. He lives vicariously through his oldest homeboy, Womack who is married to Rosa Lee, the father of three., and taking care of his aging father, Harmonica. Dana hangs with a coworker, "co-struggler" Gerri, who is the divorced mother of two with a few secrets of her own. The reader is taken through the entire gamut of emotions, at times reeling with laughter only to be on the brink of tears by the next few lines. All of the twists in Liar's Game give the book a down to earth believability that makes for an enjoyable read. Of the many things that stand out in this book, the humor and character development evoke a lot from the reader transforming one from passive observer to more of a silent participant in all of the ensuing drama. The reader is given a glimpse into the insecurities that lead to all of the impromptu choices ever made on the dating scene-choices that only become more complicated if truth is not a principle player. Vince and Dana's foreground drama is only momentarily upstaged by that of Womack and Rosa Lee, and again by Gerri and her love interest Jefferson. Just like life one can only be witness to bits and pieces of extraneous scenarios, so Dickey peppers the novel with a subplot of Vince's lesbian landlord and her relationship struggles. The overall theme seems to be that any relationship worth having is worth the vulnerability that comes with openness be it physical or emotional. When it comes to love, deceit is far too tangled a web to weave.
Rating: Summary: Good Read - Real Review: As a sister who was in the same situation as Dana, dealing with a man with a child from a previous relationship, it is a struggle! You have to decide if you want to deal with the entire package, just to be with the man. Like Dana says, that child may mean the difference between your child going to private school or public, going to Disneyworld for your family vacation or the neighborhood park. If you have goals set for yourself and your life, are you willing to let those goals go for someone else's child, no matter how much you love the man? And let us not forget that "Baby-Momma-Drama" is very real!!!!!!!
Rating: Summary: "A Good Read" Review: I enjoyed this book and I look forward to his next book. This was a sort of a new twist from the Eric Jerome Dickey "norm". I felt that the main male character sold his self out a bit by letting his baby's mother have too much control for too long. He should have nip that situation a couple of chapters ago. It took his woman to force this drama to a halt and he could have done this himself. He could have been much stronger. I truly enjoyed this book overall. Keep up the good work, Eric.Rhonda Gibson, Founder, First Annual African American Book Clubs & Readers Retreat 2000, Oct 13 -15, 2000, Cherry Hill Hilton, Cherry Hill, New Jersey
Rating: Summary: Just plain awful Review: I felt compelled to write after just finishing Mr. Dickeys book. I have now read all of them and I can tell you this one is just plain awful. What was up with the licking of the gum? Why did we need to know this? He seemed stressed for ideas and good story line in this book. It seemed he just threw in some weird stuff like the gum licking and the female lead always having to pee for lack of any real substance to write about. We are sooooo tired of wacked out female characters. I would not recommend this book especially if you really liked his other stuff. You will be highly disapointed.
Rating: Summary: Lies Bring Drama Review: Although the beginning was a tad slow, this was a good read overall. When relationships are built on lies, drama is sure to enter the picture. EJD brought the drama, but also realistic views when one decides to be honest in a relationship or not. Dana and Vince have some lies working where they must decide whether revealing the truth will either save or end their relationship. I also asked the same question as one of the reviewers - What was really going on with Womack's wife that night at the Poetry Reading?
Rating: Summary: Excellent! Review: I think this is his best book to date. It's obvious that he has honed his skills with his earlier books (also very good!) and is able to portray the characters and their emotions in a way that makes you sympathise with their inadequacies and frustrations. His play with words and dialogue is first class and you can almost picture the scenes in your mind. When this one becomes a film I hope Wesley can do Vincent Calvary Browne some justice on screen.
Rating: Summary: Liar's Game Review Review: Liar's Game was the first Eric Dickey book I had read. I was captivated by the characters. The characters were so lively that you felt as if you knew them or someone like them. I read this book in three days. I was really captured in the stories. It is a great book. I feel it is definitely is worth your time. It will only take a few days; however, the characters will remain with you so when you read his other books you'll remember them. Also try Cheaters. I'm in pursuit to read the others.
Rating: Summary: OFF THE SCALE! Review: What fan of EDJ WASN'T waiting for this book to come out. As expected I was not disappointed What I love about his style of writing is that you can literally picture everything happening in the book. I thought Dana, regardless of her facade, was emotionally immature. Very real characters. What was really going on with Womack's wife though? A must read!
