Summary: An inspiring and well-written account of life's journey.
Review: This well-written book describes the fascinating journey of how one man, born into poverty and considered the "dummy" of his fifth grade class, rose to the position of chief of pediatric neurosurgery at John Hopkins Children's center. Although he encountered many obstacles along his journey, including a temper that caused him to almost kill his best teenage friend, Ben Carson gained insight into what he had to do to reach his life's goal of becoming a doctor. In excellent prose, Carson details how he eventually realized his dream through hard work and an unyielding faith in God. Today, Dr. Carson is best known for giving young children a second chance at life. He has separated Siamese twins and routinely performs a remarkable surgeries in which he removes half of the brain of children with intractable seizures. This book serves as an inspirational story of how we can all overcome life's obstacles and reach our goals.

Summary: very uplifting and encouraging one to self-achieve
Review: I think that we need to learn that handouts thru some government program is not the primary way to promote ones self-esteem. It appears that Ben Carson received a lot of help from friends, family, God and a little help from the government (food stamps). He was proud and appreciative of the help received from God friends and family. Although very necessary to he and his familys survival, he was embarassed by the help his family received from government. I wish that others could see the difference this has made in the life of someone so gifted. I hope that he is not only just a role model for youth, but for all of the people who may be victims of racial, gender, and other biais in our society.

Summary: A Gifted Neurosurgeon's Biography
Review: Dr. Ben Carson is living proof that we are NOT mere products of our environments. He overcame a broken home, bad temper, and racial inequality to become a great man, loving father, and famous Chief of Pediatric Neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore, MD. In this well paced, informative biography, Carson speaks about the different goals he set for himself throughout his productive life and how he, through patience, hard work, and faith in God, went about achieving them. This was an enjoyable biography, an unusually humble one from someone in the medical profession who has earned every right to brag about his achievements, yet who deliberately avoids doing so. You will enjoy reading this book.

Summary: Book does not come close to describing the grace of this man
Review: I first met Dr. Carson in the fall of 1992. My daughter had already had three brain surgeries at home, but still had the tumor. Thank God we were able to get a referral to Johns Hopkins. Dr. Carson's confidence and grace reassured us that he would take care of us. And he did. His two books do no come close to representing his personality. Even without his background, this is a great man! But his absolutely amazing achievements show just how anyone can do anything, if they put their minds to it. We, too, have bought many copies of his books to give as inspirational gifts. We always have an extra here at home, just in case. We return to Baltimore every year for a follow-up exam. We always have copies of his book for autographs, which he gives in the gracious manner with which he approaches life. I feel we are honored to know this man. And we thank God for his skills.

Summary: This is an excellent book and true story of a remarkable man
Review: I met Ben Carson in 1991 as he was about to open up my sons brain. He is one remarkable caring human being. I wish we could all be like this man. He is a man without color. You would have to know him to understand the meaning. This book reflects his being and it is quite extranary. You will realize the real peace that can only be experienced by bonding with the contents of this book. Enjoy. Be ready for an awakening. There are only a few people that walk this Earth today that can enhance the fore thought of brience or the capable of suceeding in one difficult world of confusion when it comes to a Doctor like Ben Carson. Read the Book!

Summary: Intergrity and Faith Conquer Disability and Prejudice
Review: This intriging book truly inspires the reader that through faith in God and high respect for oneself, any obstacle cannot only be surmounted, but, overcome completely. After all this great man has conquered, overcome and obtained, he still remains humble and giving to those who are less fortunate then he. Indeed, his kind heart extends to all mankind. I finished this book feeling if everyone read it, the whole world would believe that "they can do it too!"

Summary: Tremendously Inspirational!!!!
Review: I enjoyed "Gifted Hands" so much that I purchased six or seven copies for friends! Without a doubt, it is the most inspirational book I've ever read. I had the opportunity to hear Dr Carson speak in Montgomery, Alabama a couple years ago--he's also a great speaker. I then met him at the airport. Even though he and his family were rushing to make a flight, he took the time to chat and autograph my book. He is so humble and down-to-earth. Great BOOK about a great MAN!!

Summary: A very moving story...
Review: It reads like a Disney movie but the events and circumstances depicted in this book are real for millions of inner city kids. Dr. Carson's mother struggle to raise Ben and his brother Curtis while working two or three jobs at a time is commendable. Her spirituality and dedication to her two boys shines through out the book. Dr. Carson learned from her to believe in himself and most importantly to trust God. And I learned that miracles do happen
