Rating: Summary: THE Best book for girls EVER! Review: I read this book for the first time when I borrowed it from my best friend. I read it over and over. It told me everything I needed to know about the features of growing up. It also gives you questions and advice from other girls around the country. Once I got my own copy, I knew about everything, but I STILL read it over and over! I recomed this book for ages 8-12, but even if your younger, get this book when the time comes! You will be glad if you get this book. I sure am!
Rating: Summary: MY 9 YEAR OLD WORE THIS BOOK OUT! Review: I cannot say enough good things about this book. It is so appropriate for pre-teen girls. My daughter loved being able to read it on her own first and then ask questions afterwards. She was able to relate to it and loved the illustrations. I don't have to bother her anymore about brushing her hair daily and it was a wonderful way to open up discussions about the changes her body will soon begin to have. Even if you prefer to explain things to your daughter first - this is a wonderful book for them to be able to refer to afterwards.
Rating: Summary: Appropriate for preteens Review: My daughter is 9 and I thought it to be an approprate time to start the "talks". This age group is still so innocent, it's hard for them to fully understand all that is coming up for them in just a few short years. The thing I like about this book is that kids can absorb information at their own pace and as they need it. What they're not ready for they won't read and when they are, they can look at it with some privacy (I've even heard her giggle about it with her friends). The book coveres a lot of self care like teeth brushing, showering, and the basics. The last part of this book is about menstruation and body hair. There is no sex talk like some other puberty books.
Rating: Summary: The Care & Keeping of You: THE Body Book for Girls!!! Review: Okay, since I was growing up pretty fast, I was looking for a book that would give me advice and information about the changes I was going through. My mom kept on buying and suggesting book after book, but I just couldn't find the right one. Then she brings me "The Care & Keeping of You; The Body Book For Girls." Alright, i have to admit that at first I was a little hessitant about reading the book cuz I thought it would be just like the other book I had read in the past. Boy was I wrong! Once I started, I couldn't put it down! It has absolutely everything! From tips on facial care to braces. It still is helping me a lot! I reccommend this to any girl who's undergoing puberty and can't just find the right book to help her. Congratulations to AMERICAN GIRL! :)
Rating: Summary: A Great Book For Kids Like Me Going Through Puberty! Review: I really was impressed by this book. A lot of girls like me are going through changes like this, and it is a good thing to know about. I use this book as a common reference item on an every day basis. The pages are full of info that you need to know, like items about your period, shaving your armpits and legs, and fighting with your mom, dad, and friends. I really enjoyed reading this book, and I read it over and over again. I do think, though, that readers should be about ten or older to read the material, and to be able to look at the pictures that show, say, how to insert a tampon. But overall, I think that this is a great guide to a girl's every day life!
Rating: Summary: The Care and Keeping of You-- the body book for girls Review: This book is one of my favorite books! I read it over and over again. I learned about things i never knew -- puberty, hair tools and more. But there are some pictures in there that kind of make me sick. As you know it is just part of learning. Although it may be spendy, it is all worth it! Ask your parents before you buy it.
Rating: Summary: A Good Beginning Review: Not a whole lot of detail, and some of the information presented was REALLY basic (wash your face, brush your teeth...), but a good beginning overview of 'growing up' for young adolescents.
Rating: Summary: A Librarian's stamp of approval Review: The dreaded question for any librarian-- "Can you help me find a book for my preteen about puberty?" Thank goodness for The Care and Keeping of You:The Body Book for Girls!!!!!! It is a librarian's (and parents) dream come true. It is so refreshing to be able to have such a wonderful book to recommed on such a touchy subject. This book covers all of the embarassing yet important areas with grace, clarity and kid friendly illustrations. I am no longer flustered when I am asked for a book which is suitable for this topic-- I go straight to shelves with a smile! ( I also have a 10 year old sister and always let patrons know that I would give this book to her too!)
Rating: Summary: Great way to introduce young girls to body changes. Review: Finally! I was looking for a book my 10 year old could read without the sexual details. This book is great for girls who are just starting to think about shaving, the shape of their bodies, wether or not to wear a bra, or what a period is. It is a basic guide to taking care of their bodies. I ordered other books I had to return because there were chapters on sexual intercourse, masturbation and birth control. This book has none of that. I can now give my daughter this book to read without having to cut out any pages!
Rating: Summary: Sensible, honest, open communication approach. Review: I am so glad I found this book! My oldest daughter is approaching the pre-teen years, and I knew I'd have to get her a book that explains all the stuff I learned in 'sex ed', but I didn't want to give her all the psycho-babble that came with my class. I like this book because it is simply a how-to of body care. The approach is, "you've got a body, and you're growing up, and you're going to have to take more responsibility for taking care of your body. Now, since you're growing up, there are some things that will change about caring for your body..." The book covers such innocuous topics as brushing your teeth and taking care of your hair. But it explains also about braces, and how to prevent head lice, and how often to shower. How to handle body odor and what to do when hair starts growing in new and unusual places. Nutrition, exercise and athletes feet are addressed. Of course, there is plenty of data on how to find a bra that fits. What happens when a girl menstruates, and how to practice good hygiene. There is a brief discussion about body image, and it's all very positively handled in the book. The only part that I thought wasn't totally correct was the bit on nutrition. It assumes that the "food pyramid" is a correct diet for everyone and it says that a person should eat all these grains every day. (When in reality, a huge number of people are allergic to grains, and most people can survive better on just vegetables, fruit and protein. Of course, the cereal companies gave the government educational system lots of money to promote the massive grain consumption, so there you go. It's now part of our "education". I do feel this was a little slip in this book. They bought into the government-pushed propaganda, and I didn't like that. Other than this, though, the book is just excellent. I highly recommend this book for anyone with a pre-teen daughter. Very useful, and positive.
