Rating: Summary: What an awsome book to read! Review: Flipped was mainly about a boy named Bryce and a girl named Julianna. Bryce was a new kid in the neighborhood and just so happened to move I right across from Julianna. She seems to have some really strong feelings for Bryce. He is to shy and just plain is terrified of her. Will they ever like each other? I was really interested in this book, because it kept me asking for more. Every time I was supposed to go to bed I would end up reading past that time. I really also enjoyed it because it was about a boy and a girl who grow to be my age throughout the story. Julianna seems to have a lot of characteristics that seem to relate to the way that I act. She likes to go overboard in trying to make Bryce like her, so she can finally get her first kiss. This was what made the book such an attention grabber. It seemed that when I started that I would have to read till the very end on the first day. Another reason that this book was so good was the fact that the narrator switches from Bryce to Julianna every chapter. It lets you hear both sides of the story. It kind of makes you wonder who is telling the truth and who is lying. All in all this was the best book I have ever read.
Rating: Summary: an excellent book Review: Flipped is an excellent book that tells a story over the course of about 5 years. Something that makes the book different from many others, is that it is told from two points of view; Julie Baker's and Bryce Loski's. Julie, for the longest time, has had a big crush on Bryce, her neighbor, who happens to absolutely hate her. For many years, a long story developes about Julie trying to get Bryce to like her, and Bryce trying to get Julie to stop liking him. As the story goes on, though, the two of them start maturing, and a strong theme developes. Treat others the way you would want to be treated, whether you like them or not. Through the course of events, one of the characters (I'm not saying who) starts to change their opinion of the other, revealing this very strong, yet true, theme. This is an excellent book that I would recommend to anyone from the age of about 10 on.
Rating: Summary: Look below the surface Review: As Juli and Bryce tell their story in alternating chapters you must look below the surface and decide for yourself if Bryce is correct. Is Juli a crazy, muddy, tree-climbing, singer-to-chickens who cannot take a hint and who must be avoided at all costs? Or is Juli right when she says that Bryce is the love of her life with breathtaking blue eyes who is walking around with her first kiss, just waiting for a little encouragement to give it to her? Juli has had a crush on Bryce since the second grade. As the eighth grade unfolds, Bryce is taking a new look at Juli. He is also taking a closer look at his own seemingly perfect family with their precisely trimmed lawn and house full of antiques. His father is a stunningly handsome executive, but what kind of person is he under the surface? Meanwhile, we also learn more about Juli's family across the street. They live in a funky looking house with peeling paint, a broken fence and chicken poop all over the back yard. What kind of people don't take care of their yard? Why do they drive a broken-down car? Van Draanen's method of letting Juli and Bryce tell their own stories keeps you glued to the book. You get to see them begin to look below the surface and think about their real feelings for their families and each other. They must start by getting over their ingrained first impressions in order to decide if the sum is greater or less than the parts. The answers are surprising.
Rating: Summary: You'll flip for Flipped Review: Wendelin Van Draanen has given us a book with two points of view. This is not a book from either a boy's or girl's point of view but both. Each chapter tells Julianna's or Bryce's point of view. Julianna thinks Bryce is dreamy. Bryce thinks Julianna is annoying. Until one day.... This book is more than a love story; it is a book about growing up and figuring out who you are. Julianna and Bryce both learn to look beyond the surface to see what really matters and end up discovering themselves along the way. Julianna learns from those around her. The relationship she builds with her father and Bryce's grandfather Chet help her discover who she is and where she fits in. How she sees the world and her inner strength is expressed through her relationship with her sycamore tree. Bryce learns from his grandfather and in a strange way his father. He learns to "see" beyond the surface; beyond the outside of a house, beyond the look of a person, beyond a scraggly old tree and see what lies beyond. Through his experiences he sees Julianna, his grandfather, and Julianna's sycamore tree in a whole new light. This book will make you laugh and make you cry. Wendelin Van Draanen's words bring Julianna and Bryce to life. You feel their emotions and change along with them. I would recommend this book to anyone. So flip down to the library or bookstore and pick up Flipped.
Rating: Summary: A Worthwhile Read Review: Flipped by Wendelin van Draanen is a truly worthwhile read. I just got finished reading it.... As it happens, I had picked up this book several times and always ended up putting it back on the shelf. Last night though, I decided I would give it a try. It was a wonderful story that really involves the reader. I love the way it switches from Juli and Bryce and shows you each scene the way each of them experienced it. Julianna is portrayed in the book as being a little odd, she loves the climb and old mangled sycamore tree, (which could be describes as ugly to others) she raised six chickens and collects their eggs for a profit, and of course, she has been wild over Bryce Loski since she was seven. Bryce, on the other hand, just wants Juli off his back. In the story he does almost everything to get rid of her (including asking Shelly Stalls out, who Juli happens to despise) ... until everything gets flipped. I would really reccomend this book to anyone who enjoys reading. And to those of you, who like me, have picked up Flipped and decided not to read it- my friend, I say you should read this book ;)
Rating: Summary: To Great To Ignore Review: Dude, after I finished this book, I was like, "WHOA!" It's about a girl who is crazy about a guy for like 6 years and then when she finally gets over him, HE'S the one crazy for her. Man, I couldn't believe that Van Draanen just ended the book there, I seriously hope she writes a continuation - I want to know what happens next! This book will leave you feeling good and wanting more. You don't even think about the fact that these are junior high kids! It could be related to any age. It's excellent. Read it. Love it. Read it again.
Rating: Summary: The Book Review of Flipped Review: When I read the book Flipped by Wendelin van Draanen, I thought is was outstanding. It talks about two young teenagers falling in and out of love, most of the time with each other. Juli is a young energetic girl hoping for Bryce (a boy in her grade) to like her. Bryce is a boy who is trying to stay as far away from Juli as possible. The two of them have fights throughout the book, like when Juli's favorite tree is getting cut down (to build a house) and Bryce could have cared less about it, so Juli gets really mad at him. However, when Bryce makes fun of her and talks about Juli behind her back conflicts start to rise. But right when Juli is just getting over him, Bryce is just starting to discover that he is falling for her.I highly recommend this book to teenage girls. It really shows what the life of a teenager is really like. Also how chaotic and surprising love can actually be.
Rating: Summary: Flipped Review: 'Flipped', by Wendelin Van Draanen, was one of the best stories I have have ever read. Juli Baker, a sensative, overwhelmingly hyper girl, has liked Bryce Loski, a calm, shallow boy, since she moved across the street from him in the second grade. He has secretly despised her while she has not so secretly admired him. Juli isn't the most ordinary girl you have ever met. She raises chickens in her back yard and has a deep liking for a certain sycamore tree she passes everyday on the way to her bus stop. She has a family secret that she never knew about that will change her life and the way she thinks. Everyday for six years, Bryce has attempted to avoid her and her chicken eggs, fearing they have salmonella poisoning. Eventually, with the help of Bryce's grandfather, Chet, they both realize what they feel has been wrong all along. This romantic comedy switches from Juli to Bryce, each telling their own side of the story. It is definitely a worth while read and taught me that what you see is not always what you get. You need to look beneath the surface to see what is really there. Wendelin Van Draanen is an extremely gifted writer, and is also the author of the Sammy Keys series. I loved the style of her writing and how it switched from person to person. It felt like the characters were speaking directly to you. The characters are easy to relate to. It tells of both an eighth grade girl and an eighth grade guy and their struggles in school and with their adolescence. Every teen that ever reads this book will love it. A friend recommended it to me, and thinking it was just another ordinary book, took it. From the first couple pages, I knew it would be an excellent book. I couldn't put it down. The book was at a perfect level for and eighth grader. It was a little challenging, but I could still understand it. From the start, Juli's unusual habits and interests weird-ed Bryce out, but by the eighth grade, everything is flipped, and neither of them know what to think anymore. 'Flipped' had a very interesting and original storyline. Juli was the 'odd' child, and Bryce was the 'normal' one. He soon realizes that he and his family are not that average, and he would much rather have Juli's family. I must admit, the ending was very predictable; they were both going to get together and live happily ever after. The ending wasn't as important as the rest of the story, though. The storyline was simply hilarious. It was a page-turning novel that I would read over and over again. I recommend it to readers of all ages. It's not only a good novel for teens, but for younger and older people too. It shows how life really is in middle school. If you want to look into the life of a 14 year old, then read 'Flipped'. It's not your ordinary novel.
