Rating: 4 stars
Summary: Good for begginers
Review: I bought this book from a referall by a co-worker. It did help me get started with HTML, but I thought that it was a little MAC heavy on some of the examples. I would recommend it for a begginer though.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Great for beginners and intermediate
Review: This book is really easy to understand and has great examples on everything. I knew nothing about HTML and after the first few chapters i made my first webpage. The way the author explains everything is excellent. Great book and also a great reference.

Summary: User-friendly and FULL of good advice
Review: HTML 4 for the World Wide Web is an excellent companion (or, maybe it would be better to say "continuation") to Paul McFedrie's 'The Complete Idiot's Guide to Creating a Web Page'. Where McFedries really does start at the beginning, Elizabeth Castro assumes that you have some very basic knowledge, and takes it from there.

Where 'HTML 4 for the World Wide Web' scores high is in two areas... First, the index is excellent (and I mean EXCELLENT). No matter what the topic, you'll find it without hassle. Secondly, Elizabeth Castro goes into some detail about actually getting your site hosted, and how to upload your files. This goes beyond the remit of other starter guides, but is obviously essential if you're planning to publish your pages.

Every topic is covered with abundant examples and the pages are littered with screen prints so you know exactly what you should be expecting. Castro goes into META tags (and how to get them recognized by the search engines), she covers several examples of Cascading Style Sheets, Tables and Forms; and she offers some simple JavaScript examples.

HTML 4 is a high quality broad reference that is well written and covers an extensive base of essential topics. If you're planning professional-looking web pages, this one is a must.

Summary: Good Book for Begginer-Advance
Review: I found this book really good. Castro explains things clearly and understandable. If you already know html little bit and want to expand your knowledge, its better to try this book out. one good thing bout this book is its easy to find things in the glossary, if you forgot sumthing just look at it, and your there. The appendixes also provides information good. if you forgot some propeties of a tag or you want to learn other tags just look at it and the page on the side, then your their.

good book if you want to expand your knowledge

Summary: Excellent Book!
Review: With this book and no other information, I was able to create an entire web site in a day. I used Notepad and wrote everything from scratch -- didn't even need an HTML authoring tool. Highly recommended.

Summary: If you could only have one HTML book, this is it!!
Review: This is the "must have" book for anyone who is even considering creating a web site. This book is not associated with any particular software but will come in handy no matter what software you use. Even those who use WYSIWYG HTML editors such as FrontPage will find this book to be a great reference.

With this book and Windows Notepad you would have everything you need to create any HTML page. It is the only reference book in our office library that is raggedy and dog earred.

The only negative thing that can be said about this book is that if you are over 40 you'll need to pick up a nice fat magnifying glass when you order the book. The print is very small.

Elizabeth Castro rules the Web!

Summary: Best primary HTML reference
Review: This is the best basic HTML reference book around. Like all the Visual Quickstart books, it is thorough, quick, easy, clear, concise, and leaves you feeling like you've done a great job. You can read it straight through, or skip around to any chapter or any one/two page subject you choose to learn about, depending on your mood and need. I also have the much bigger 'HTML - The Complete Reference' book by Powell, but find it unwieldy to maneuver through in both size and verbiage. This book doesn't have that problem. The HTML Visual Quickstart book is broad in reference, well written and small enough at 383 pages that I can easily carry it around with me. I can quickly understand what I want to know, and move on, without any unnecessary text. If I had only one HTML reference book, this would be it. I refer to this book often, and use it to show others examples of how to code what they want. I really like the tips at the bottom of each subject, and I use the color chart and corresponding hexadecimal codes at the back of the book. The sections on Forms, Cascading Style Sheets and JavaScript are wonderful because they are so often needed in coding good-looking, professional and functional web pages. My HTML 4 Visual Quickstart book is definitely not for sale.

Summary: Detailed but clear
Review: I am a complete idiot but I found out how to do really complicated things from this book and the website is extremely useful for double checking your work.

Rating: 4 stars
Summary: Very comprehensive and easy to follow
Review: This book really answers all the code questions a designer could have, it is a bit tricky to follow the introductions to the "chapters" but there are many pictures, diagrams and sample HTML pages that one is off to a great start in designing your own webpage after the first 100 pages.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Indispensable
Review: A wonderful book that is a must-have for anyone interested in web design. The book is accessible enough for even the most intimidated beginner, yet remains completely relevant to much more experienced designers. Highly recommended!
