Rating: Summary: Buy this book NOW!!! Review: This is the single-most useful combined Servlets and JSP book on the market. It does assume that you know Java, so it isn't for the total Java rookie. The examples are great! There is a lot of really useful code that can be reused in real projects. This book has become a sidekick on my project, and everyone on the team has a copy. Marty does a wonderful job of keeping the writing easy to read, and intermingling the occasional "Dilbert" cartoon in the book. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is starting down the web-based development path of JSP/servlets. ** If you ever get a chance to take one of Marty's grad classes at Johns Hopkins U., do it! You too will know why he is "Mr. Java" in the greater Baltimore/Washington area! Cheers Marty!
Rating: Summary: Instant Understanding! Review: My company asked me to become an "expert" in JSP in a time span of about 4 days so I could translate at a technical meeting for them. I'd worked with the Web before and had heard of JSP/Servlets, but couldn't do a whole lot with them. This book has proved to be a fantastic resource. I've read the entire book in two days and now have enough information to discuss the subject with our consultants. A must have!
Rating: Summary: Core servlets and java server pages Review: Language is plain, and technical explanation is accurate:It is easy to understand and easy to practice. This book is excellent! Hopefully the arthor can frequently improve the contents of this book, because the whole java industry changes so quick, everyday is different.
Rating: Summary: Core Servlets and JavaServer Pages was great Review: This was a very informative, organized and well written book. It left no questions concerning servlets and JSP unanswered. I would definitely recommend it to anyone interested in learning these skills.
Rating: Summary: Clear explanation of servlets and jsp technologies Review: This is the book to read to have very clear and concise explanation of how to set up whole servlet/jsp environment to begin to develop your own servlets and jsp pages. Then Marty will take you on a tour on how to implement and think about implementing useful servlets explaning what's behind the technology you use. This is a very practical and useful book for anyone who wants to jump into the world of server-side java technologies and quickly become a proficient in the field.
Rating: Summary: Absolutely Excellent Review: I am a student at Kings College London studying Computer Science. I found this book very concise and easy to follow. Everything in the book was relevant, and all examples ran without a hitch with the exception of the online travel one, about which I emailed the author and received a very timely reply! same day infact! Unbelievable. I would reccomend this book to anyone as it has both depth and practicality without detailing irrelevant historical facts about how technology has evolved etc etc. This book will get you programming excellent JSPs and Servlets quickly and easily! What more could you ask for!
Rating: Summary: For Quick and Easy answers Review: The book was a great plus, it starts out from the basics and takes you to some of the advanced topics and teaches with patience. It is a well paced book.
Rating: Summary: excellent introduction and good HTTP discussion Review: This is a great book if you'd like to get going with JSP/Servlets. Especially usefull are the bits about HTTP headers, response codes, things like that, which really get you into the heart of the HTTP protocol and using servlets to actually extend the power of the server, not just generate dynamic documents. Also, very cool display of servlet power by creating dynamic excel spreadsheets- a good example of how you can use servlets to build a server to serve just about anything. A bit weak on applet/servlet communication. I would recommend this book and the O'Rielly "teakettle" book on servlets as a good basis, taken together.
Rating: Summary: A complete REFERENCE Review: If you are looking for an introduciton to JSP or servlets, this is not the book for you to use. This book is a solid reference to Java servlets and JSP. It is one of the first books that I reach for when I have something nagging at the corner of my mind but can't quite bring it to focus. It is not a book which I suggest reading cover to cover. You won't get as much out of it. Find the chapters or sections on the topics you are looking for and read those to get the knowledge you need and then set it aside until the next time you need it. The section of JSP tag libraries is especially useful for developers working on bridging the gap between the look & feel people on the front end and the business logic on the back end.
Rating: Summary: Reliable Quick reference Review: The book is extremely well organized and provides a reliable quick reference for servlets and JSP.A few hours into reading the book, I exactly know how to track the working and where/how to look for help in the book.
