Summary: Not quite their best, but pretty close
Review: Metallica rebounded from the terrible and untimely death of bassist Cliff Burton in 1986 by releasing their most angry, visceral and musically sophisticated album. And Justice For All is an album that symbolizes the death of the American dream, maimed by war, greed, and childhood trauma. The lyrics are meaningful, like they have been since Lightning, but on Justice, one could argue that Hetfield's lyrics (and vocals) were at their best. They could easily symbolize the tragic loss of Cliff.

They did find a new bass player, Jason Newsted, but for some reason his bass is inaudible, and is only credited with co-writing "Blackened." Regardless of that, the band still sounds awesome together as a unit. Kirk Hammett delivered his best solos on the title track, "One," and "To Live Is To Die." James Hetfield, in addition to being a great rhythm player, improved tremendously since the band's earliest incarnation. He had hinted at his signature growl on Ligthning and Puppets, but on Justice, he lets all of his aggression out, like water from a faucet, and doesn't sound as restrained or watered down as he did on previous albums. Could've been a change in the production style, or James finally getting the confidence he needed to let it all out. On Justice, one could consider Hetfield as an effective vocalist.

Lars Ulrich, everyone's favorite overrated drummer, also improves, from not even being able to keep a beat to being really fast, and dare I say it, proficient. Just listen to "Dyers Eve."

Cliff was gone, but obviously not forgotten, since "To Live Is To Die," was based off of several pieces he wrote before his demise, and even wrote the lyrics ("When a man lies... he murders some part of the world..."). It's an emotional tribute to him, and all of the members played it passionately.

I'd argue that this is their heaviest album... heavier than Kill Em All. True, KEA inspired the whole thrash-genre, but a lot of the songs were subpar, and had lyrics about heavy metal ruling the world, playing fast and loud shows and apocalyptic tales about war and the Four Horsemen. Justice intertwined angry lyrics, lightning fast solos, bellowing vocals, pounding drums, crisp production, and the sadness the band was feeling, and that's why I'd say that Justice is much heavier than Kill Em All. It was also Metallica's last album to really do anything for me, since subsequent albums lacked the initial spark and intriguing songs of their earliest work. Everything from here just seemed to be a carbon copy of their zenith.

Summary: Turning Point
Review: I see this album as the turning point for Metallica. They made this a political album, which isn't bad on the surface. But I saw it as Metallica's lean toward commercial hard rock style. This album definitly doesn't stand up to the first three. The only good thing about this album was the "One" video they did, which is a classic.

Review: Absolutely amazing album!!! ONE sticks out like a thorn in your side. A-MAXING song!! In my oppinion the best ever metal song for a number of reasons. Kirk Hammets brief but kickin' solo, and the AWESOME 3man riff from 2:30 until the end of the 7:24 song!

Crank this one up loud!!!

Summary: Beginning of the end....
Review: Troubles with this album:
* Drum sound: horrible. Lars Ulrich is not a great drummer, never will be (but he thinks about himself as a genius, that's for sure! The lord of arrogance)

* Jason Newsted was a scapegoat for the pain they suffered after Cliff Burton's death. Hetfield and Ulrich simply erased his bass lines from the album! WHy they did such a thing I don't know.

* No great solos by Hammett.

The good things:

* the last album where Metllica did not play "safe" and tried to write memorable heavy metal songs.

Summary: WELL, IN MY OPPINION, I THINK IT ROCKS!!
Review: I can't belive how some people think this album sucks!! It is one of metallica's best cd's. The greatest song on here is "one" and with all the bad reviews I'v read, no one even mentioned how great that song is!! They just said it was just a bunch of drunks screaming and stuff. This cd is awesome!! No one's metallica collection will be complete if they don't own this album. Buy it!!!!!!!!!! It's just plain awesome!!

Review: Bad production, no bass....so! This album sounds great...this album rocks!!!!.....This is metallica's crossover between technical trash metal and more percussive, riff based hardcore structure. I love the first 5 albums (including garage days ..not the black album!) ....they are all great, influential and diferent from one another , but this is the album I listen the most......I love it..and anyone who doesn't, should open up their ears and give it a try again...because is just amazing!
