Summary: A metal album without bass guitar!! Amazing!!
Review: Oh boy, how to review this album?? Musically, it's great. METALLICA really went for it, tried to make its own mark instead of only copying the British heavy metal bands of the eighties.

This was the debut by new bass player Jason Newsted. Clearly a man of integrity and with his own ideas, one was supposed to believe that METALLICA will grow a lot more.

BUt the ironic result was that, even with superb and intrincate compositions, the bass simply CANNOT BE HEARD INT HE WHOLE ALBUM!! THis, along with the thin guitar sound, meant doom to us fans. WHy am I saying that? Metallica, thinking something went wrong in this album, changed producer Flemming Rasmussen, went for producer Bob Rock, and we all know what happened.... Hey never tried again to write such ambitious, intelligent and clever written heavy metal. They went for the mainstream ONCE AND FOR ALL..

Summary: One of the last great Metal Classics
Review: Metallica just before sissy metal was put on the shelves. Metallica has never been the same and they WILL NEVER be the same. "One" is etched in stone by now.

Review: I truly do not understand why this album stands in Master of Puppets' shadow. I keep hearing "oh, there is no bass and Jason Newsted is sleeping." Jason Newsted is a better bassist than Cliff Burton would have ever been. The only reason everyone bows down to Cliff is because he is dead and they feel it would be disrespect to say he is not the best. This is not the first time this has happened, either. The same thing happened with Brian Johnson(AC/DC's lead singer after Bon Scott's death in 1980). It also happened to both of Ozzy Osbourne's guitarists after Randy Rhoads' death(Jake E. Lee and Zakk Wylde). Anyway, in my opinion, this album is an improvement from Puppets. The songwriting is more complex and the music is not too fast and out of control(like Puppets). The only song on Puppets that comes close to the standards of ...And Justice for All is Welcome Home(Sanitarium), which is nothing compared to One. Harvester of Sorrow is a great song, also.

Dont listen to everyone that doesn't like this album. They probably said "oh, everyone says it's not as good as Puppets, so I'll only listen to One and maybe the title track".

GET THIS CD!!!!!

Summary: Great if they could actually play it
Review: This album is without question the most complex and intricately arranged work the band has done or ever will do. My problem with it is not one of those guys played a take the whole way through without a mistake. They all recorded their parts dozens and dozens of times and simply cut and pasted the best takes measure by measure. If you have any recording experience, you should be able to hear the edits. For example, listen to the double bass on "Dyer's Eve". Lars would never be able to pull that off live, which is why it has never been heard in concert, along with several songs on this album("Shortest Straw" being another example). Of the songs from AJFO they have played live,
"Harvester of Sorrow" is the only one they dont take shortcuts on. But, don't get me wrong. I would rather hear this album than The Black Album or Load. This album for me is second only to Master of Puppets. If the production values were better(more bass, thicker guitars) if would probably be a tie. If you are a fan of heavy music and have never heard this whole album I highly recommend it. Just don't expect to hear any song from this album except "One" and "Harvester" if you go to a Metallica show.

Summary: ....Justice
Review: Metallica is still one of the heaviest bands on the planet today and 1988's "....And Justice For All" is proof positive that even when they brach out in stunning new directions and experiment with longer compositions, they lose none of thier power. many have complained about the sound quality on this particular LP and that, to me, is a silly quibble. While Jason Newsted is indeed inaudible on these tracks, that one flaw doesn't detract from the pulverizing attack of Lars Ulrich, Kirk Hammett(who sounds downright superhuman on every solo) and James Hetfield. The sprawling effect of tracks like "Blackened", "One" and "To Live Is To Die" is matched only by the poetic anger and unmitigated rage of the lyrics and Hetfield's barking delivery. Sonically, "One" is a precursor to the more streamlined approach they've taken to lately with it's gentle melodies and layered acoustic guitars. On "....Justice", Metallica grow from being a great metal band into a great BAND period.

Summary: instrumental so emotional
Review: Most of the songs on here are far beyond awesome, although after this album i have to say nothing else was put out close to Metallica's first 4 original recordings. TO LOVE IS TO DIE, the best song i have ever heard. C'mon guys, the beautiful excellent riffs, and the lyrics written by cliff in the middle, this song is the best. Even if it were just because of this one song, i would by the CD. i Recommend this CD!

Review: As great as Metallica is, this album proved that Metallica is greatER. This is truly a masterpiece. It is everything music should be.

Summary: Almost great, but definately falls short of the mark
Review: Call me a cliche but nothing after Master Of Puppets was really much good. Many people rate this album, but I (despite trying SO hard to like) have never thought much of it.

The idea of progressive thrash is a great one, but while this is far more progressive than most of the material on Master Of Puppets, on Puppets the epic stuff worked. Here, it's just so overdrawn and boring. The production is some of the worst I've ever heard. The album sounds like its been recorded in a dustbin with a dictaphone. For the most part, it lacks energy, is not at all heavy (the sound is thinner than a piece of paper) and most of songs actually lack the speed associated with earlier Metallica. It's not that I don't like complex music (or music that is not fast and heavy) - I listen to a wide variety of rock and metal, ranging from Frank Zappa to Cryptopsy and Gordon Giltrap to Satyricon. One of my favourite bands are Dream Theater, who aren't exactly well known for their simple songs and their sloppy musicianship.

There are two songs worth it though - Blackened still has a cool riff, and I love that little intro thing - whatever it is (that quiet humming noise). The other (by far the best song on the album, and certainly ahead of Blackened) is One. This is the haunting tale of a young man has lost his arms and legs in war and is basically a vegetable, but has to be kept alive (presumably for legal reasons). The music is very progressive, starting with a quiet, tranquil riff and building up to a fast heavy ending. The lyrics are also some of the best Metallica have ever written, exploring this man's thoughts and his anger at what has happened to him. There are some other good moments - the intro to the title track is great, if only for the over complexity of it, while the main riff to Harvester Of Sorrow is very catchy (I hate using that word about a metal band, especially when reviewing an album like this who's appeal lies lies in anything but attempted catchy-ness).

All in all though, this is pretty poor. If you don't own anything by Metallica then buy Master Of Puppets.
