Summary: Justice for all
Review: Given that this album is 15 years old, I can assume that nearly everyone has already heard it, but for those contemplating getting started with Metallica, ignore anything 1990 and forward. Beginning in 1983, Metallica began moving toward metal history with each step from 'Kill 'em All' through 'Master of Puppets', but 'Justice' was their true prize. This is an epic album for the sophisticated listener. The lyrics are as good as anything Jaymz has ever done, and the Larz' drums are better than anything he will ever do again (considering his downfall beginning with the black album). Metallica was once my favorite band simply because of 'Justice'. Their recent garbage has distorted their image - the reigns of supremacy handed over to TOOL - but Justice will never die and will be remembered forever on as perhaps the most incredible album ever conceived.

Summary: Best...Metallica...EVER!
Review: I have listened to Metallica for 2 years now and this is as good as it gets.I love everything Metallica (including their new material) but this is hands down the best. It starts of with Blackened a fast, long, heavy song which sets the stage for the entire album. One is one of the greatest metal songs ever and Harvester of Sorrow has a wonderfully dark feel to it.
The only downside to this album is that the recording is not exactly top-notch.
Other than that I would reccomend this to anyone with any intrest in Metal because this is whaat it should sound like.

Summary: Greatest Metal Album of All Time, PERIOD
Review: To give this album anything less than 5 stars is simply ignorant. Oh, and to bash the production is ignorant as well. The drums sound nothing short of amazing, probably the best, clearest, most articulate recorded metal drums ever. The guitars possess the heaviest, most classic, crunchy, mid-scooped tone gushing with dynamics -- that is, devoid of the processed, stale tone plaguing "metal" today. Heck, they sound heavier than most modern hardcore bands who downtune 7-string guitars. Hetfield's vocals are the most powerful and convincing he's ever recorded. And the bass... I'm sick of people complaining that they can't hear the bass on this album. What you need to realize, is that in the genre of heavy metal, the bass mimics the guitar 99% of the time anyway. The only real difference then between this album and past albums as far as the bass is concerned is that this album contains no bass solos. And frankly, I don't miss them.

Unfortunately, this was their last true metal album. Any real metalhead knows that the Black album, while loaded with great songwriting, was the point at which they started selling-out. And Justice for All was the last album to feature heavy metal staples such as double-bass drumming, long songs with tempo changes as well as rhythm changes, and double-time.

And Justice for All represents the pinnacle of heavy metal -- nothing has topped it since. Blackened is the quintessential heavy metal song -- rapid double-time, fast, articulate palm-muted riffs, progressive drumming, tempo changes, awesome soloing, lyrics about the end of the world, one of the greatest fist-pumping head-banging metal riffs ever written (middle section), etc. One is their best song overall, and I could spend another hour praising the rest of the album.

And yes, this album BLOWS AWAY Master of Puppets (to all you battle-crying thrash metal purists forever stuck in the mid-80's). This album goes way beyond thrash. This is pure, progressive, true heavy metal at its best.

Summary: Dissapointing considering what went before...
Review: Of all Metallica albums, this is the one album which I just can't seem to get my head around....sometimes I love it and sometimes I hate it.
All the songs are complexely over-arranged and it takes about ten listens at least to figure out what each song sounds like. Still, this album is extremely heavy with metallica giving us their fatest sound here than on any other album. Sometimes when I listen to this album I am practically screaming at the stereo '' Jesus christ stop all this 'I can fit ten riffs into one song' and play the bloody song!'' Sometimes I think they are going backwards on these songs. This definitly is regarded as a dissapointing follow-up to the invincible ''Master of puppets'' and Cliff Burton's unmistakable basslines are absent leaving the album in many ways quite dull and joyless. The band knew what they were doing wrong on this album and the following 'Black' album couldn't be more the opposite to this one.
However, They're is an undoubted touch of class about Metallica and this album can hardley be called just average just average by Metallica's standards. The best songs are the epical 'one' and 'harverster of sorrow'. One particular point to note on this album is that Lars Ulrich gives his best performance on drums than on any other Metallica album.Despite divided opinions on this album, it is still essential for any Metallica fan.

Summary: It Would be better with a Bass Player
Review: This Album by Metallica would of been a 5 star, but they are missing a sound so important to all Rock/Metal Music, The BASS. I understand that Cliff Burton passed away so tragically and the members were greiving, but it gave the original three members no right to take it out on the new Bassist Jason Newsted. Cliff Burton wouldn't of wanted Metallica to call it quits, and I am sure that he wouldn't want any replacement to be treated the way Jason was. It's sad that Jason was even considered a replacement. To be honest with you, I am a bigger fan of Burtons work, but I still respect Jason Newsted and he wasn't respected on this album. Jason is a very talented Bassist and it's a disapointment he wasn't even heard.

Summary: Bass removed, drums overboosted, repetitive and dry sound
Review: First of all, I must admit I'm surprised of the number of good reviews about this album.
I own all Metallica albums from 'Kill'em all' to the 'Black album' and for me, this is by far the worst of all.
My favorite is 'Ride the Lightning'.
Before I start hammering this down, I must say I'm not a huge Metallica fan and I'm not dumb.

1. The context

This album is a mistake. It is too much influenced by the death of the former bassist 'Cliff Burton', and it seems like this was only released to cry out the pain felt about it.

2. The bass

After the death of Cliff, the remaining members of Metallica offer a warm welcome to 'Jason Newsted', the new bass player : that is to say, they arranged the production to remove all the bass... No bass can be heard on this album.

Jason is not a bad bass player. You can hear him playing good bass on the 'Black album'. And please, you narrow-minded people, don't tell me the 'Black album' is sellout : it's the best after 'Ride the Lightning'.

Oh... I hear you complaning : 'the bass is not important'. It's to wonder if you've heard 'Orion' on 'Master of Puppets'. This makes me realize how important is a bass player. I have hundreds of metal albums, and 'Justice for all' is the only one with no bass. Hearing an album like Iron Maiden's 'Powerslave' after this shows a shocking difference !

3. The drums

Lars Ulrich may be the most overrated drummer of all time. He's also the most pretentious. He's proud of himself kicking like a cow on the double-bass. And maybe because of bass removal, the production made the drums so loud it's laughable. By the way, the drums don't sound like drums : you hear them 'clicking'.
But I haven't finished : they seem to be recycled track to track, and the rhythm hardly ever changes. Believe me, this album contains the worst drums ever recorded.

4. The guitar work

Nothing special to say about James Hetfield's playing. I would say it's overall boring and repetitive guitar riffs through songs which are much too long.
Kirk Hammett can hardly be heard on this album. Definitely not the guitar hero I have known on 'Ride the Lightning' and 'Master of Puppets' which showed great solos on every song. The only decent I heard was on 'One'.

5. The song writing

The advantage of the album is that it has a subject : Justice. Or maybe Injustice. The coverart is well representative of it, although you can't judge an album by its cover.
The songs are not bad written, but it's always the same: darkness, emprisonment, blindness, ...
One other thing can be wondered : Why did Jason co-write only one song 'Blackened' ? Why did they hire a new bass player to leave him in the corner ?

Conclusion :

Yes, this is their worst.
No, Metallica's career is not over.
Yes, the 'Black album' beats this by far.
No, it's not only a production problem. This is really tasteless.
Songs are long, boring, repetitive, and head-aching.

'One' is the only reason to get this. 'Eye of the Beholder' is not a bad song, but I highly prefer In Flames' cover. 'To live is to die' is not too bad, but again much too long ...

Summary: Their Pinnacle
Review: I was fotunate enough that this was my first experience with Metallica (10 years ago) and throughout those 10 years, it has always been my favourite Metallica album pre-Black (what is after the Black album is not Metallica afterall) The sophistication of the riffs, topics, the best of Urlich amazing drums (bf he acquired a Ride Cymbal ;) Kirk's best, and Hetfield is at his most mature angst (Jason was not really allowed to shine on)
Certainly one of the best albums of all times

Summary: Metallica: The Undisputed Kings Of Metal
Review: This is by far Metallica's best cd. Powering riffs, flying vocals, extreme bass drumming, and screamin' vocals are what made metallica what they are,...from the opening song "blackened" to the conclusion "dyers eve",justice is a powerful album from start to finish.

Summary: Has Some Moments... But Was The Beginning of the End
Review: I have had this recording since its release. It sounds like old school Metallica but just doesn't have the impact of their first three albums. The songwriting is more complex but I also think that makes it sound more contrived. When I listen to "Ride the Lightening" I feel like the band's attitude was 'let's kick some rear but do it with a relatively high degree of sophistication where possible'. What I get from "...And Justice for All" is 'let's come up with a ton of polished riffs, arrange them like a guitar teacher at the local community college would, and add just a touch of political pretension to our lyrics.' The result is an album with moments of impressive musicianship but one that lacks the heart of earlier efforts. Of course, we who were there in the beginning now know the disaster that awaited with subsequent releases. Compared to post-Black Album Metallica, this is pure genius.

Summary: Metallica's Angryest!!
Review: This cd really shows their anger. They have some of the fastest and heavyest song's on here. Kirk lay's down some of the fastest solo's. The lyric's are every dark and brilliant. ONE is probly one of the best Metallica song's. If you are an 80's Thrash fan you really should buy this.
