Rating: Summary: quite possibly the best metal album ever Review: Everything just comes together on this one. Huge, operatic, tough, intense, complex and ignore the people who say the sound is bad - they are high. It's crisp and in your face. I suspect that the majority of these riffs were culled from Cliff Burton's tapes after his death (even if he is only credited with 1 track) since the band just turned into a 3rd rate bar band after this recording. I can't think of anyone who took metal further after this (with maybe the exception of fantomas...).
Rating: Summary: The Frayed Ends of Sanity Review: And Justice For All is yet another masterpeice from the greatest metal band ever to exist. Like its precedor, Master of Puppets, Justice defines the word perfection. Every track shows excellent songwriting, instrumental techniques, and every element that makes heavy metal what it is. "Blackened" is an awesome song, as is the title track, "Dyers Eve," "The Shortest Straw," "Harvester of Sorrow," "To Live is to Die," "Eye of the Beholder," and "The Frayed Ends of Sanity," which features a stranely familiar introduction. In other words, every song on this album kicks major ... But there is one track that truly stands out on this album, and is in my mind Metallica's greatest song ever. "One" is a powerful metal-ballad that shows the bands talent like nothing else. It may sound strange, but I am comparing this song to Queens "Bohemian Rhapsody," in the fact that it incorporates several styles of music into one peice. The intro to One starts off with war sounds in the background: machine guns, explosions, helicopters, until it goes into the instrumental opening, which begins slow, yet edgy. The lyrics are powerful and stunning, yet intelligent and meaningful. WIth both metal and classical influences, the song slowly builds into a faster, more powerful drive, until the final segment which features machine-gun like riffs like nothing any other metal band has ever produced. If you think that Enter Sandman is Metallicas greatest song, check out this album, you'll be in for a suprise.
Rating: Summary: Welcoming Jason Review: This is quite unsteady album at points... I think songs like ...And Justice For All and Eye Of The Beholder aren't Metallica at its best, but this album contains my all time favourite Metallica track, Dyers Eve. Its raw, aggressive power gives me creeps every time I listen to it! The album also contains three other great Metallica songs, One, Harvester Of Sorrow and Frayed Ends Of Sanity. Even the fact, that this is the 1st Metallica album with Jason, is not enough to save this "least-good" Metallica album from getting "only" 4 stars from me. Not recommened for a Metallica-beginner!
Rating: Summary: Metallica's best thrash album, IMO! Review: With And Justice For All, it is pretty obvious Metallica opted to take a more realistic approach to their music. Up until then, a lot of their songs seemed to evoke an unrealistic feeling of immortality. However, their fourth album strays from this ideal and takes on a more mature approach to music, dealing with such issues as governmental tyranny (Eye of The Beholder), abusive parents (Harvester of Sorrow), and even teen-angst (Dyers Eve). The drumming is easilly the best of any Metallica album ever released. And the lyrical composition is unsurpassed! The song One succeeds perfectly in telling the story of an injured soldier who feels that being excluded from the war he faught in has basically defeated his whole purpose in life, which was to dutifully serve and protect his country. Blackened, my favorite song on this album, is among Metallica's most catchy, and gives an excellent description of the dangers associated with nuclear war. Dyers Eve is among Metallica's fastest and thrashiest songs ever. I could go on and on about this album, but I'll keep this review short enough that you don't get bored with it. Also, about the shoddy sound quality, I think it actually helps to give the album a darker, more moody atmosphere, fitting perfectly with many of the song subjects. In brief, if you are looking to buy a pre-Black Metallica thrash album, this should definately be first on your list!
Rating: Summary: Metallica at their best Review: On this album Metallica shows why they ruled the metal world at that time. The album starts off furiously with "Blackened" and is followed the the epic title track. The centerpiece of the album is the classic track "One", but all the tracks rock on this album. I think that one of the most overlooked tracks is "Dyers Eve" which gives "One" a run for its money as which song is the best on the album. This album is one of the 25 greatest albums of all time and should be part of everybodys collection
Rating: Summary: Master of Puppets lite... but great nonetheless Review: I absolutely [disliked] Metallica when I first heardthem... but I thought metal was just loud noise created to rebel against parents. [I]... continued to play them and eventually my prejudice faded and my appreciation for the musicianship of these guys grew and changed my whole musical outlook forever. I ended up wearing out this album and several tapes. But enough about the history lesson... this is the album that made Metallica the success they are today. Which is plenty of reason for anybody who loved Master of Puppets and previous albums to have ample reason to [notlike] it. It's a great album though and important to anybody who likes Metallica OR Alternica. Either as the end of a great band or the beginning of one.
Rating: Summary: Metallica's most technicall album!! Review: I love Metallica. From slow ballads to crunching rhythums they rule it all! I think Hammetts most technical soloing is on this album. I love it because I'm a guitarist and the songs keep me busy. Fast drums, fast guitar, not very good bass...Dissapointing.... Metallica knows Jason Newsted [stinks] so they turn down his bass!If you like this check out Ride the Lightning, Master of Puppets, and Kill Em' All, Cliff Burton is on those!!!! (Metallica's best albums..Load and Reload are terrible and the Black Album is so so...)
Rating: Summary: Best Metallica Album - Unintelligent Metallica fans go away Review: People will never come to a consensus about this album, which in my opinion is the greatest metal album made since the late 1970's. Before I review the album, there are two related things I want to touch on. First of all...the production. Yeah the production of the album is shoddy, but that's the fault of the producers and engineers who mixed the album on a $50,000 system and never took the time to listen to it on a normal stereo. Second of all, the people who leave reviews saying "I've been a fan of Metallica since the Black album and Fuel and this just isn't Metallica"....i have one thing to say to you. You don't know Metallica and you don't know music. From the opening fade in of Blackened to the ending fury of Dyers Eve, this album is a relentless assualt of nasty Hetfield riffs, mean Hammett solos, skilled drums from Lars and solid supporting bass from Newstead (the few times you can hear the bass. I think the loss of Cliff may have lead people to try to hide the bass sound to avoid a direct comparison of Metallica with and w/out Cliff). Either way, the power and arrangements of the songs is unbelievable, and the lyrics are the best Hetfield has ever written. The album deals with real subjects; subjects that people don't like to talk about at parties. If you are bored by this album, think the songs are too long or have no point, or like some other people unbelieveably think that Metallica are not talented musicians, then you are not a metal fan. This is an album for metal fans. The songs on the black album are four to five minute simple songs: intro, verse i, chorus, verse 2, chorus, weak solo, chorus, repeat, fade out. If you like that, you're a radio rock fan. Save yourself the money. But also save us the time by not posting unintelligent reviews. Thanks in advance.
