Summary: If you liked Bridget.........
Review: I would rate this with 3.5 stars but I will err on the generous side. Getting Over It certainly falls into the "Bridget Jones" genre, although I did not find it quite as laugh out loud funny as Bridget 1 and 2. It's simply another single British girl saga complete with the requisite dysfunctional family, quirky friends and on again off again love interests. It does delve into some heavier issues than Bridget (death of a parent, domestic violence), however most of the outcomes are the same. If you liked Bridget you will enjoy this one, consider it a good beach read.

Summary: A Great Summer Read
Review: I picked up this book because it was suppose to be just as funny as The Diary of Bridget Jones. Well it didn't quite beat Bridget but it was still pretty funny in it's own right. The book may seem a little dry in the beginning but stick with it and it becomes really good. It's definitly a book worth picking up.

Summary: A Laugh Out Loud Book!
Review: I wasn't sure what to expect when I started this book. Helen Bradshaw's life is certainly eventful! Her father dies at the beginning of the book. Certainly death is no laughing matter! However, right from the moment Helen tries to get to the funeral on time, one funny event after another continues to happen.

This book is definitely in the "Bridget Jones-esque" genre, but is unique unto itself! If you enjoy books by Helen Fielding or Isabel Wolff, then Maxted is another author you must add to your list!

Summary: Laugh out loud, cry a little too.
Review: Extremely enjoyable read. I had to read the hysterically funny bits out loud to whoever would listen. On the other hand, the sad parts with descriptions of emotions and strange observations after her father's death are particularly poignant. Obviously written from the heart. Only someone who has suffered bereavement could write like this. I identified with this book on many levels. Excellent!

Summary: Starts off Great....Then it fizzles
Review: This book starts off great! I love Bridget Jones and I was told that is book would be similar. And for the most part it is. But the underlying story of Helen's (the lead character) fathers death drags and pulls the story in two different directions. The ending is the biggest disappointment. The ending was predictable and not exciting. I found myself just wanting to get the book read so I could start a new one.

Summary: Seriously funny story about very serious topics
Review: Anna Maxted has made an impression on me. She goes to show you that one can write a goofy, funny, Bridget Jones-ish type novel without coming off as a complete airhead comedy. Sure, the heroine, 26-year-old singleton, Helen Bradshaw, is by no means a wise, witty, scholarly being, but this character has a good heart with real feelings and struggles, not just a whiny life-hates-me attitude that provokes no sympathy from readers. Getting Over It, you could say, is the anti-Bridget novel that is uproariously funny with come-backs and one-liners that can put Henny Youngman to shame.

Just like any typical young twentysomething, Helen Bradshaw has a boyfriend that doesn't quite measure up (although very pretty to look at), a job that is less than glamourous, and a boss who she'd like to cross off her Christmas card list. But when she gets the call that changes her life, Helen is beside herself with misery. Her father, although not her best friend and barely an acquaintance, has died and left her mother in a state of hysterical depression. In the meantime, Helen's friend, Tina, seems to be going off the deep end in a totally different way, leaving Helen with too much on her plate to deal with and not enough time to come to terms with her own feelings of loss.

Getting Over It is a very powerful novel that deals with very serious subjects. Anna Maxted manages not to drag the novel into the ground with too much depression, however, and creates a highly readable and escaping story. Humor runs rampant throughout the pages without making light of the seriousness of the situations. A very good story with laughs on every page. I couldn't even finish the book without ordering her second novel right away. Definitely an author to keep on your shelf.

Summary: Lots of fun
Review: I found this to be very entertaining and hard to put down. This is not in any way a Bridget Jones clone. Buy it and love it!

Summary: A Reality Check Of Sorts
Review: After reading nearly all of the typical 'single woman looks for single man' books by British authors, I found "Getting Over It" to be thoroughly enjoyable.

Helen is grieving, albeit unknowingly for the majority of the book, from the sudden death of her father. This created a "perspective check" of sorts (i.e., she is not just another quirky female looking for Mr. Right). For me, this made it much easier to sympathize with the main character's trials.

The subject matter creates a more meaningful, realistic read than so many of the "Bridget Jones" variety. I found it impossible not to care about this heroine--she tugs at your heartstrings with the many screwed up experiences that she encounters.

I recommend this book for an easy, enjoyable read!

Summary: good summer read
Review: Anna Maxted's Getting Over It deals with a 26-year-old single woman, Helen, who is facing her feelings about the death of her father, her mother's needs as a result of her father's death, as well as finding a man and helping her friend through a difficult relationship. Once I started reading, it was hard to stop. Parts of the book were funny and interesting. It's hard not to compare it to Bridget Jones though, especially since I bought it hoping it would be similar but with younger female characters. I did not find Helen as appealing as Bridget, however- for some reason I pictured her as a short, fat, unstylish, and not a very nice person. The romantic lead male, Tom, was not very appealing either, as he just kept coming back for more after everything Helen puts him through. This book would probably be more interesting to someone who has lost a family member, as a lot (more than I prefered) dealt with Helen's father's death and her relationship with her mother. I would have enjoyed hearing more about a social life. Other characters are great though- her friends, Luke, Marcus, and especially Fatboy!

Summary: Funny and Intelligent
Review: I originally checked Getting Over It out from the library but less than halfway through I had to run out and buy my own copy because I knew this one would be a keeper! Plus, I knew I would need to have a copy handy to pass around to all my friends.

Anna Maxted has created one of the funniest heroines I've encountered in long time in Helen Bradshaw. Helen is having a very bad year ~ her father has just died, her mother is losing it, one of her closest friends is having serious boyfriend trouble, and she's just been kicked out of her home by her "God's gift to women" flatmate, Marcus. To top it all off she may have just driven away the true love of her life before they even made it to their second date. Helen muddles her way through it all with a sense of (wicked) humor and a little help from her friends.

While this is undoubtedly a romantic comedy, there are some serious issues here as well. If you're looking for a fun read with a little something more than can be found in your typical "chick-lit" fare ~ look no further than Getting Over It. It's a keeper!
