Rating: Summary: Memorable for its timely topic, and one character Review: This is a very well-paced novel that kept me going till the end. I didn't believe in the ending, however -- it just didn't ring true. Ironically, the character who seemed most vivid to me was that of Emily, despite being mysterious and absent throughout the book. The questions of her choosing death have stuck with me long since reading this book several months ago. This is the sort of book I enjoyed most when I was in my teens because it inspires discussion.
Rating: Summary: A COMPELLING,RICH NOVEL Review: I never read. Ever. Because im sick of empty, boring books and that is all i ever seem to find. This book drew me in, and kept me in , and I could NOT put it down until i figured out the entire story. After I read it, I realized how fleeting moments are , and I wept thinking about all that I take for granted. This is the only book I would ever buy for someone and strongly recommend that they read it right away. My life is changed for it. If you ever wanted to , and couldn't, lose yourself entirely in a book from the moment you read the first line, to the time you are finished, then this is the book. I DO vow to read every single book written by this author, I can't wait to get my hands on another of her novels! Read it!
Rating: Summary: Emotionally Jolting Review: So sad and depressing but this was one of the few books I've read that I literally could not put down and that made me cry.
Rating: Summary: Eye-opening Review: As a mother, this book of fiction has touched a nerve. To deal with the death of a child would be excruciating; but to deal with the death of your child by suicide would be dreadful, unbearable. As parents, we often don't see the pain our children our in, we excuse their behavior as being rebellious or moody, or "It's just a phase....". I guess that explains Melanie's unwillingness to accept that her daughter could be suicidal. But we do love to hate her in this book anyway....I love how Ms. Picoult has mixed love with mystery and drama. Even the engaging courtroom scenes are remarkable. This is the first of her novels that I have read, but it won't be the last.
Rating: Summary: A Soap Opera only fit for Sob Sisters Review: When you finish "The Pact" -- after you dry your eyes, catch your breath, and compose yourself -- take a minute to think back on the story and you'll realize "you've been had". The characters sketched in this book (and they are only just sketches) simply don't add up. The plot is completely manipulative and utterly implausible. I realize Jodi Picoult is a popular author with a faithful following, but if you insist on even a shred of intelligence in your reading material or in the characters you read about, this book is not for you. For a fully-realized and satisfying treatment of some broadly similar themes try Maeve Binchy's "Circle of Friends" instead. For courtroom drama, just watch an episode of "The Practice."
Rating: Summary: The pact / The best story I ever read Review: The book the pact is one of the greatest books that I have ever read. Jodi Picoult is a really wonderful writer and I can't wait to read more of her books. The entire book kept me interested and there was not a time that I wanted to put the book down. Chris and Emily were great characters and I could actually put myself in their place. She described them so well that I actually felt like I was in their relationship. My favorite part of the book was the end. I loved the drama especially when gus and Michael were having feelings for eachother and they didn't have a clue what to do. The blank note in the can at the end of the book had to be the most depressing thing that i have ever read but it just made me love the book even more. In my opinion this book should be a classic and I know that it will be one of those books that i read again and again and my children will definately have to read it as soon as they learn how to read.
Rating: Summary: A good read in several ways Review: This was not what I was expecting! I hate to say it was a "pleasant surprise" since the storyline can't exactly be considered pleasant, but it was definitely more gripping and plot-based (rather than character-based) than I expected. With a significant but effective flavour of the legal suspense genre playing a part, Picoult tells the story of two very close families in the time leading up to and following the attempted execution of a suicide pact between their teenagers, Chris and Emily. It really makes you wonder how well you can know a person... even your own child. The plot itself is suspenseful and gripping - I'm not a fast reader, but I finished in a matter of a few days. The characterization seemed lacking in a couple of characters, but perhaps that only stood out to me because the rest of the time it was almost unsettling in how real and precise the characters were. The writing style is simple and just right for this novel. I will definitely be picking up more novels by this author.
Rating: Summary: A wonderful read! Review: This is my first Jodi Picoult novel and it was great! I am going to run out and get some of her other books! I'm sure I won't be disappointed.
Rating: Summary: unbelievable emotions Review: I have read many many books, often I have two going at a time. This is the first book I have read by Jodi Picoult. I found myself caught up emotionally. I literally cried at times while reading this. I read at the stop lights, I read at lunch, I read while standing at the stove cooking supper. This is the most heart wrenching story I have ever read. It feels like it has to be a true story, because I can't imagine anyone making up a love and sense of oneness that Emily and Chris shared. For two days I found myself nervous, on edge, and even sometimes sick to my stomach, waiting to know what happened that night, and what the fate of Chris would be. This is probably the best story I have ever read. It is without a doubt the most compelling and emotional one. You must read this, but be prepared to not want to put it down!!
Rating: Summary: What an incredible writer! Review: This is the third book by Jodi Picoult that I've read. And I'm currently reading a fourth! I think what is amazing about this writer is that she manages to pull the reader into the story. I certainly felt all the emotions of the characters: Gus' despair at losing her friend, her shock at what her son reveals to her; Emily's anguish; the gamut of feelings that Chris undergoes....and so on. I also discovered that up to the last chapter of Ms. Picoult's books (those that I've read)there is going to be the unexpected and that makes it really difficult to put down her books. Super reading!
