Summary: Down We Forget As Up We Grow
Review: The Hartes and the Golds are inseparable and have been for 18 years. Their children, Chris and Emily, have been entwined since babyhood. Under the parents' fond and loving eyes, the two develop into best friends and on to romance as they reach their teens. The children are so close they have a private language and can finish one another's thoughts.

Does this sound like trouble waiting to happen? Indeed it is. Julie is under claustrophobic pressure that she doesn't understand, and in despair, wants to commit suicide and have Chris help her. When the police find the pair, Julie is dead and Chris has a head wound and is unconscious. Suicide pact gone wrong? Murder? We don't know.

The story is told in two voices "Then" and "Now." We learn about the childhood, friendships and daily lives of these upscale New Hampshire neighbors. With the tragedy, the friendship shatters, the marriages are strained to the breaking point, and Chris is arrested for murder.

A well-written tale with a few wrinkles that lift it out of the ordinary: Chris's defense lawyer is about as far from a father figure as you can get. He is interested in getting Chris off and his fee. He has no interest whatsoever in what really happened, thus closing another door in the boy's face at this terrible time. My sympathies were with Chris throughout, partly because he was the best-realized figure and partly because he was suffering for all the sins he didn't commit, even if in fact, he pulled the trigger that killed Emily. I stayed irritated at the four parents because I could not believe they would not even notice the deadly "fusion" that was growing between their two children and what implications this melding of characters meant.

This is a good read and the suspense builds nicely until you are totally focused on figuring out what actually occurred the last few minutes of Emily's life. You know why, but not who.

Summary: Easy reading - tough subject
Review: The subject made me leary of venturing into this book but for the bookgroup I did it and was pleased with the story. Great job of writing, as usual for Jodi Picoult, makes this book read easy. Hats off to the research done here; it was done well. Having a 15 year old son I can attest to the correctness of attitude by the character Chris (up and down, loving child and frightened young adult all in one body). This is a sad story but I believe well worth reading.

Summary: A perfect "made for TV movie"...
Review: A very quick, easy read. The characters are fairly one-dimensional and some of the descriptions and overly obvious "fore-shadowing" made me want to gag. However, I kept with it out of a desire to know what "really" happened. It would make a great, slightly cheesy, TV movie.

Summary: Another great book by Jodi
Review: This book really held my attention. I finished it in only a few days. It usually takes me a few weeks to read a book because I have limited time. This is one of those books that keeps you up all night. I really just couldn't put it down.

Summary: This one is a must read.
Review: This book was fantastic! I read this book several years ago and it was spectacular. I have just re-read it and it's as great as I remembered it. It has it all; love, loss, and law! It's incredible and I highly recommend this novel.

Summary: the best i've ever read!
Review: Five friends and myself have read this book together and we all agree that's it's incredible! I read the entire thing in one day. It was impossible to put down. I've never read an book that has evoked so many emotions in me and enabled me to create such a vivid picture of the characters and everything that happened. I definitely recommend this book to everybody, especially teenagers such as myself. I plan on reading more from this author.

Summary: The Pact
Review: This novel was probably the best book I have ever read. The book is about 2 people who grew up together and fell in love. This book drew me in immediately and kept me interested throughout the whole book. There are so many suprises in this novel, it will keep you guessing throughout it. There are a lot of topics and issues that this book discusses, the book really made me think. I tried to put myself in the young girls position, but I couldn't imagine what she was feeling. I think this novel is so awesome because it was things that happen in everyday life. I would love to go on forever about this book, but I don't want to give anything away.

Summary: Scared of big books? Not this one....
Review: A friend of mine gave this book to me on the last day of my vacation. I started the book at 9AM and only put it down for a few bathroom breaks and dinner, finished it just after midnight. I am not a BIG reader, nor do I look for books that are more then 200 pages. This book took me back to my small town neighborhood, my friends and my family. Aside from the main story line, sucide, I could see the characters, the rooms, the colors. This book was terific! I can't wait to read more of her.

Summary: PAGE TURNER!
Review: Loved, loved, loved this book. Was into it by the end of the first page, which is rare for me. Read it in 2 days while on vacation and drove to the bookstore when I finished to get another one of Jodi's books.......Plain Truth.

Summary: This book was amazing!
Review: I almost didn't buy this book when I saw it in a used book store, but I changed my mind and decided to try it since I had never read anything by this author. I found it to be a little slow in the beginning and almost didn't finish it, but I had heard many good things about it so I continued reading. I was so intrigued by the plot and the characters! You get so attached to them as the story unfolds. I have never felt such a mix of emotions from the ending of a book before; sad and happy at once. I would definately recommend this book to everyone!
