Rating: Summary: Hustlin': no longer an all-male sport Review: Stringer's Let That Be The Reason is about the "come up" of a female hustler. One surprising aspect of the story is that it's not set in the traditional NYC, Miami, or even the palm-tree laden jungles of Los Angeles, in terms of what a reader would expect when imagining a setting for drug trafficking. The main character, Pamela Xavier, "Carmen" when she's in hustler mode, is making her ends meet in Columbus, Ohio. The complicated story of a "good girl" gone bad unfolds before your eyes. Forced out into the streets after a disagreement with the love of her life, Chino, she's forced to make a way for herself and her son. Chino relinquishes his paternity of the child after he has convinced himself that Pamela cheated on him while he was in jail, when she had not. She begins hustling by entering the "escort" business, but with her eye on the prize of more and more money, she ends up becoming a major drug dealer, caught up in a system she can't seem to get out of. From what I understand, this is a novel based on a true story, but I wasn't 100% clear as to whether or not this was Stringer's personal story. It was extremely difficult for me to relate to Stringer's storyline of Pamela slowly but surely becoming Carmen. It was unbelievable for me as a reader to comprehend a college student going from a legal better life, to the lap of illegal luxury with her first lover, Chino, then to the streets, when he throws her out along with the child she had with him. The level of wealth she was accustomed to, thanks to Chino, fed into the never-ending feelings of greed that eventually brought her down. That said, I have to give Stringer kudos for the strong messages of self-love and taking responsibility for one's actions that she brought across on the page. Aside from that positive aspect, the frequent grammar errors, constant use of profanity throughout the novel, and choppy, almost elementary telling of the story left much to be desired when it comes to the quality of the novel. If you don't mind wading through imperfections to get to a story full of gritty street life, this may be a book of interest to you. Anna R.E.A.L. Reviewers
Rating: Summary: Let That Be the Reason Review: This book was good, however, I think the author was hustling the readers by ending the book when it was really getting interesting.
Rating: Summary: Best book yet Review: Let That Be The Reason has to be the best book I read about the game yet. I admire the fact that it was about a female hustla instead of a male. It shows women can do the same stuff males can do, if not better. I enjoyed this book a lot and I cant wait for the sequel. Big ups 2 Vickie Stringer..Picture Me Rollin

Rating: Summary: Who Eva said Chicks can't HUSTLE Review: OK you did the damn thang. This book was HOT. Pamela/Carmen was real. She made mistakes that I wanted to HURT her for, but then she would handle her BI (Business). When she got on her grind she was like WHAT. But her downfall was being a woman who loved and lost. CHINO. I was like why she end it like this????? But I guess she has to keep us wanting more. The sequel needs to hit the street like ASAP. I am waiting. BTW is she locked up or what????????
Rating: Summary: Let That Be The Reason Review: This book wasn't what I expected it to be. You can t tell that this was the Author's 1st book. One thing that I hated about the book was that Pam ( Carmen) never said what her son name was. Everyone in the book kept calling him the baby. That really got on my nerves. I feel that Carmen got actually what she deserved.
Rating: Summary: Eye Opener!!! Review: I must first say hats off to Vickie Stringer. I loved the book. I read it in two days while sitting in the New York City welfare office, signing up for assistance. Yesterday was my first time picking up your book and I had actually just grabbed it from my neighbor because I knew going to a state office (especially for assistance) is an all day, degrading event. While I read your book (while standing on line for 2 hours just to get the application to apply for assistance) I was starting to relate to the event that took place in your life, and the reaction you took to survive in the world. Because I too is now in a bind (never had to rely on anyone for anything before) where sometime I think I will not be able to provide for my daughter (although my situation is because of a relocation with my job and a car accident a month after I started in NY). So the situation that you described is very real and is happy you found a way to hold your head up. Family love is the greatest love aside from the good Lord. I am assuming this story is true and I know a lot of people can relate (you see I decide to log on at 12am just to write to you). This will open people eyes to realize that there are consequences to every decision/action you make. I am looking forward to reading part 2. I hated that you left me hanging on this one, but it is understood, you gotta keep us waiting and longing for more. Well, we are. My neighbor and I have actual started a little book club with about 7 girls from Queens, Brooklyn, Nassau and Staten Island and every week we switch books. So all I can say to you is KEEP IT COMING. And if you are still incarcerated keep your head up, stay strong, believe in your higher power (faith) and know that you have some positive people in New York supporting you and your efforts. Take care of your boy and send the family our love from miles away. PS: Look I am talking like we are homies. But after reading this book and tearing like I did at the end I feel like we are or we went through some of the same things. Now and forever A dedicated reader Kelly
