Rating: Summary: disappointed Review: I was excited when I got this book as a recommendation from Joshua Harris' "I kissed Dating Goodbye". After the first 15mins I grew restless and disappointed. I tried in keeping an open mind and heart as I flipped through rest of the pages, time after time, I found myself falling asleep to it. I concur with some of the other comments, Elliot's advice on courtship is impractical for the amass of this generation. Maybe tis' not the season for me to read this book, perhaps God did anoited Elliot with the gift of testimony and relationship wisdom, but I just didn't benefit from it.Different generations have different styles of courtship and marriage. In the old testaments, girls usually get married around the age of 15-17, and most of those marriages were arranged. Would this apply to us today?
Rating: Summary: Overwhelming, but worth the read! Review: When I first started to read this book, I have to say that I was completely overwhelmed. Elisabeth Elliot is absolutely amazing in her dedication to being a Christian woman. At first, I saw her situation as being so far removed from my own life that I couldn't even relate to the advice. However, as I now am reading parts of the book for the second time, I realize that the story of love and sacrifice can be applied to all of us. Elisabeth Elliot's book can be used as a wonderful example of pursuing a Godly relationship, and has motivated me a lot for my future. The scripture passages throughout the book are also very helpful and applicable for me. I definately recommend any Christian read this book, it will motivate you and show you how pure a relationship can be.
Rating: Summary: This book is an embarrassment to Christian women everywhere Review: This book is one of the most misogynistic pieces of literature I have ever read. Although I grew up in a conservative Southern Baptist family, I was angered and repulsed by this book. Elliot argues that women are to be "passive" and men "active," that God does not want a women to call a man on the phone or to go out on a date alone. Is this the kind of God you want to believe in? Elliot's sexist point-of-view will teach your daughters to be quiet and submissive instead of proud and self-confident. Learn to think for yourselves, American women. Elliot's book is pure rubbish.
Rating: Summary: SUCH AN EXCELLENT EXAMPLE. Review: "Passion and Purity" is somptuous in that the path to marriage is pure as it must be. The book is down to earth and practical. Noone should feel that purity before marriage is beyond one's reach; weaknesses and strengths are addressed throughout this true story. Patience is the key element. There is a mine of wisdom about the path of a single woman to marriage. Passion is controlled by purity in the book. You need to read it. The book is ravishing and so clean!
Rating: Summary: One of the most important books for the current generations! Review: I think this (true) story of the courtship of Jim and Elisabeth Elliot has got to be one of the all-time greatest love stories! I really don't think I've ever read anything so authentically romantic. This book truly changed my life! It really fueled my commitment to Christ and a life of purity, and gave me encouragement and strength! I've read other books by Mrs. Elliot and found them equally inspiring. But so far, this has to be my favorite.
Rating: Summary: Passion and Purity-good insight Review: For those of you frustrated with today's dating arena, this book gives good insight(both biblical and practical) that encourages the reader to "surrender" and let God work in this area. Though, all may not agree with her advice for today's dating scene, I think there is much wisdom to be gained. A must read for all Christian women (and men would benefit also).
Rating: Summary: Know the Bible before you quote it! Review: Jesus spoke Aramaic, not Greek. The Bible quoted here was written in Greek by writers who NEVER KNEW JESUS. The Bible also excludes the books from Egypy and the Dead Sea that tell us Jesus was married and a father, and guess what, Mary being a virgin does NOT mean in the physical sense, so learn your terms before your trumpet them. God wants love, not blind, ignorant obediance based on writings from people who never knew Christ. Jesus was married to Mary Magdalen. Read the research with an open mind and learn from it! Otherwise, your write without any expertise.
Rating: Summary: Waiting on God's Perfect Timing Review: I read this book after reading "I Kissed Dating Goodbye" by Joshua Harris. This book, Passion and Purity, was like a breath of fresh air in my life. I am a college student who feels this book has drastically changed my life, because it is showing me how God is preparing me to become the woman that he wants me to be. This book is wonderful for showing how God works in mysterious ways.
Rating: Summary: Learning to lean on Jesus Review: I read this book with apprehension. I just knew it was going to tell me dating and companionship was a "no-no" Instead, the author related to me how she did it and why she abstained. I learned a lot of new things throught this book, not the least of which is....trust God for my mate.
Rating: Summary: Exactly what I need to hear Review: This book came at a time in my life when I was considering dating. Looking for a book on dating, I found this book. Actually, it was recommended by a friend who read it and loved it as well. The book really hit home. God spoke to me through it, the words I really needed to hear.
