Summary: The Dark One Lightens Up
Review: To those who have not read other books in this series: don't start with this one. Gregori is a complex character, and you should get to know him in other stories first. Otherwise, you'll come away with an incorrect view of the entire series, and especially the heroes.

I've read most of Christine Feehan's Dark series, and enjoy them. As some reviewers pointed out, she tended to repeat the same phrases in this book (molten mercury - for example). I had the feeling she used it as a generic description, intending to use the Replace command in her word processor to change most to other things - and either forgot or ran out of time. I'm willing to forgive her because Gregori is so compelling. I gave the book 4 stars because of this; otherwise it deserved all five.

Imagine yourself as Gregori: You've lived 1000 years alone. You're the most powerful of your race, a consummate healer - the first one to whom your people go for healing. They know you'll put your life at risk to save them, and that you'll passionately protect women and children. At the same time, you're the most ruthless dispenser of justice. The most isolated and feared.

You know if you turn vampire, there is no one who can destroy you. Not even the most ancient of your race realizes the depth of your power. You could destroy the world, and you are one step away from turning. Suddenly, you discover the Prince's lifemate is carrying a female child. Could you simply hope the daughter will become your lifemate-the only person who can save you from yourself and keep the world safe? Or would you do everything in your power to ensure she was?

Read Dark Desire to discover how Gregori assured Savannah belonged to him. Then read Dark Magic to see the final affect it has on his soul. Only the touch of his lifemate can keep him from becoming wholly evil, yet he gives her freedom from him, and from her fate, until he can resist the darkness no longer. If he does not join with her now, it will be forever too late not just for him, but for his people, and for the world of mankind. His first physical union with her is nothing short of brutal. He had gone so far into the darkness that she almost couldn't save him. This realization nearly destroys him. He believes himself a horrific monster. It's his pain that jolts Savannah into the reality of her world, and her place at Gregori's side.

His darkness vs her innocence makes this story great. Gregori has been my favorite character for some time. Learning that he would finally have a lifemate made me go out and hunt for this book.

I intend to own all of the Dark series. And in tribute to Ms Feehan, I'll be buying them new. I want to make sure she gets every penny she's so rightly earned.

Summary: I wanted to like this book
Review: I love the Anita Blake Vampire Hunter series and was really excited about a book about vampires that would tie me over until the new installment came out. This was not it. Poorly written and at times embarrassing, I only finished this book out of stubborness. His eyes were alway "molten mercury" and there was no rhyme or reason to the powers that her characters possessed.

Review: Not a patch on Laurell K Hamilton- was a pretty disappointing read.

Summary: I expected better
Review: After all the recommendations I got to try this book, I really expected better. The idea behind this series is great: Carpathian males (who seem a lot like vampires, since they drink blood and have lots of amazing abilities, but are not, because they don't kill when they feed) need to find their mates, because, if they don't, they'll succumb to the darkness inside them and go on killing sprees. Before I read this book, I imagined that the males would be strong (few romance heros aren't, after all) but vulnerable, because they know they need someone else's help. I love reading paranormal or futuristic romance when it's done well, but, in my opinion, this was not.

In the beginning, I was cheering, because I thought Savannah was going to take Gregori down a notch or two. I could definitely understand her desire not to be controlled by him, and it seriously annoyed me that he didn't seem to understand that taking over her actions and making her do things was a problem. Although I didn't like the first sex scene, which was definitely a rape scene, I understood that Gregori had gotten out of control and couldn't stop himself. It was a relief that he felt bad about it, after.

However, Savannah rapidly deteriorates into Gregori's superficially independent sex toy after this. I really don't care if she and Gregori are lifemates; that shouldn't give him permission to force her to do whatever he wants, even if he does believe it's for her own good. However, since Savannah's own stubborness almost gets her killed several times, I suppose the author figured she had to have Gregori take control, since Savannah wouldn't have lasted the whole book, otherwise.

I've read romance with alpha male types in them before, but nothing to this extent. Gregori's extreme jealously didn't seem to fit well with the whole lifemate concept; he didn't want Savannah to even touch another guy, and yet he and Savannah are supposed to be lifemates, unable to feel the slightest bit of attraction for anyone else. Did he expect that the other men might try to take Savannah for themselves? I could buy that if the other men had been unattached Carpathians (although the rules of their race say that no other Carpathian would even consider taking someone's lifemate from them) or vampires, but humans? Savannah would have not problems fending them off. All that leaves me with is the impression that, not only does Gregori not trust Savannah, he also doesn't want her to have a social life. Having a lifemate sounds pretty dismal to me.

I could probably say a lot more about the content of the book, but I think I'll move on to the actual writing now. By the end of the book, I was tired of so many different phrases and scenes. Christine Feehan is probably the most repetitive and heavy-handed writer I have ever read. Gregori's eyes were always "molten mercury" and everything about Savannah was described with either the word "silk" or "satin". And, of course, every time Savannah walked into a room, she captivated everyone with her beauty. I found myself wishing that someone would say "wow, that is one ugly lady", just for a change. I felt like the author was trying to beat her readers over the heads with these things, just in case we didn't get it the first two or three times.

After reading this book, I have a new appreciation for the paranormal romance that I've read and liked. This book was not what I'd call a romance, since it had few romantic scenes - it's really more of a paranormal sex book. There are vampires, and vampire-like people, humans who are either cruel or vaguely petlike, and lots of sex. I think I might be weak and read another book in these series, mainly because it bothers me that so many people think these books are good - I keep thinking that there has to be a reason, and I'd like to find out what it is that I'm missing.

Summary: A friend recommended it to me, but
Review: The book was recommended by I friend whose taste in books generally is similar to my own. However, this time we really disagree. She liked the book and has bought several in the series. "If you like vampire series, you got to read these!" Since she had recommended the Laurell K Hamilton series, and I really liked them, I gave it a try.
The only thing this book did was annoy me. I mean, really! How many times can an author use the word "Carpathian"in one paragraph?? She was going for the record. In the beginning of the book, she seems to use it at least once in every sentence, sometimes twice!
Besides the overuse of "Carpathian", the heroine was vapid, the male was insecure and overly controlling, and the plot was trite. I made myself read the WHOLE thing, hoping it would get better. It didn't.

Summary: Save your money for other books
Review: Unfortunately i purchased all of Chrisgine Feehan's books that were available from Amazon. The first was boring, sappy drivel, that was so unoriginal it did not catch, much less, hold my attention. The best i can say is that this is the worst Vampire series i've ever read. None of the other books is any better than the first one - in fact if you substitute the cover page of one for the next you won't really see any difference. Same cliche's page after page.

Save your money and buy a book from Laurell K. Hamilton, or Charlaine Harris if you want a great read, and don't waste your time on Ms. Feehan's limp "heroines", and chest-beating "heros"

Summary: A Romance for the Anti-Feminist
Review: I love vampire romances, however this entire series horrifies, and at times, sickens me. I wouldn't give it any stars except that it's required in the form.

If the idea of "justified" rape and women born to belong to men is sexy to you, then this book, and the series, is for you. The men are all thinly disguised Neanderthals and the women are obedient doormats. Sure, they protest a bit at first, but soon they're all happy to belong to their men and do what they're told.

I truly believe that people should be allowed to write and publish whatever they wish in our society, even if I personally disagree with it. However, the fact that young women are reading this and finding it sexy is truly disturbing. I fear for the future generation if they consider *this* to be the way men should treat women.

Don't waste your money on this series. There are many other authors out there who write vampire romances without the need to make women subservient.

Summary: Another winner.
Review: I absolutely adore all of Christine's work, especially this one. I have been looking forward to it since I bought all 5 books in the series.

Gregori and Savanah are made for each other literally as Gregori's Prince and friend is now his father-in-law.

Savanah was concieved to become Gregori's lifemate. She is his only salvation. Thank you Christine for such wonderful stories.

Summary: Started Out Great...
Review: I was captivated from the beginning! Savannah and Gregori were such dynamic characters from the outset, and the passion weaved into the story was awesome. But about halfway through the book, the many twists and turns and unnecessary characters and details bored me to death! I had to force myself to read the end of it, and I was so disappointed. The plot for Savannah's life was not elaborated on nearly as much as I had hope it would be, it left you basically in the dark. Also, the 'interludes' were great in the beginning of the book, but later on got very repetetive and consequently boring. I got really tired of hearing Gregori's eyes described as "liquid mercury." There are so many other ways to express the word 'gray', I wish some of them had been used. If you have a short attention span, this book is definitely not for you.
