Rating: Summary: Stranger With My Face Review: "It was simply that her presence lingered like the echo of a voice or perfume too subtle to be immediately recognized. My eyes moved further, to the desk with my portable typewriter on it, to the shelves along the far wall lined with books. She had crossed the room to stand in front of that shelf and read titles. How did I know this? She had seated herself on it and reached out her hand to run over the surface of the pillow. The spread was smooth and taut. There was no indentation to show that something had rested here. But I knew, I knew." Everything is good for seventeen year old Laurie. She is in the "popular" group going out with her most romantic boyfriend, Gorden. She's got a lot of friends including Helen, a newcomer. But then, strange spine tingling things start to happen. Gorden doesn't want to go with her because he swears he sees her in another guys hands walking along the beach. Then she sees reflection's in her window. But is that her? Strange voices at night wake her up. She feels creepy sensations that someone is lingering around the house following her. Then she finds out she is adopted, not only that, she has a twin sister Lia! Lia appears and starts communicating with Laurie. What does Lia want? Many friends start to betray Laurie and strange startling things are yet to come. One morning Helen is found in the park in coma and Laurie was suspected to have left her there. With Astral Projection (a Navaho thing that Laurie has to go out of her body and go places) Laurie discovers her past and stops the horror... or does she? This book keeps you on the edge of your seat wondering what is going to happen next? Every chapter ended with a chill down my spine such as "Who are you?" I asked her. "What is your name? What shall I call you?" I felt her lean across me, and her breath was light against my cheek. "I am Lia," she whispered. "I am your sister." Teens who love realistic fiction books (some mystery to it) with some cultural beliefs in the background should check this book out. Many surprises are in store for you! Will you take a chance to find out when Lia takes over Laurie's body and tries killing her new boyfriend who will come to the rescue? What is going to happen next?
Rating: Summary: Just Plain Fun Review: 'JUST FRIENDS' is a timeless story about long time friends Freya and Jack who get more than they bargained for after Freya's lawyer boyfriend dumps her and she is forced to move in with Jack. The story moved at a slow paced in the beginning but once the bickering between Freya and Jack began so did the fun.Freya and Jack have a hard time adjusting to life as roommates especially when Jack starts dating a much younger woman and Freya takes to answering personals ads but when Freya needs someone to accompany her to England and pose as her boyfriend for her "wicked" step-sisters wedding its Jack that she turns to. Once these two get to England things really begin to heat up and the story takes an unexpected twist that will have you scrambling to finish this book. My only regret about 'JUST FRIENDS' is that the author did not, in my opinion, sufficiently develop the characters of Cat and Michael. I would have loved to see more interaction between those two but overall 'JUST FRIENDS' was a fun read and I would recommend it to anyone who likes romantic comedies. 5 Stars!
Rating: Summary: Enjoyable ... Review: Although I think "Perfect Stranger" was much better than this, I think this one wasn't that bad. Yes, it was predictable, and the main characters (Jack and Freya) seemed a little bit childish, but still I enjoyed reading it.
Rating: Summary: A good read Review: Doesn't everyone love a story about best friends that realize they were meant to be together? Well I do, and this story was great but there was something lacking that I couldn't put my finger on. I think it was that I didn't really like Freya very much? But anyhow, if you're looking for a fun and quick beach read, then check this book out.
Rating: Summary: Just about Perfect Review: Freya and Jack have been friends for a long time. Sure they've had there ups and downs, like the time Jack had a crush on her, but they've made it through just fine. Freya thought she was about to be proposed to, instead she was dumped. When she moves into Jack's place the drama starts to unfold. Jack is a 30 something writer with one extremely well recieved book, that didn't get the buyers hopping. He is supported by his rich father and teaches classes at a local college. So what if Freya never returned his advances. He has a stream of girlfriends who all happen to be in his classes. They don't care that he can't write a decent sentence. The book comes to it's climax when Jack and Freya go to England for her step-sisters wedding. The climax is heartbreaking and it forces the two to wonder if they could even remain friends. I loved this book and almost everything about it. The only issue I have is the abrupt ending. However, it was definitely worth it to see Jack and Freya try to go from "just friends" to maybe something more.

Rating: Summary: unoriginal, with flat characters Review: I feel like I have read 100 books like this lately--Lucy Sullivan Is Getting Married, Thirtynothing, Ralph's Party, etc. And those were all better than this one. While Just Friends has an interesting enough story (although lacking in originality), the characters are one-dimensional and the book was very predictable.
Rating: Summary: Funny read for all those singles out there! Review: I found the back of this book/inside cover really funny & knew I would dig it once read! Funny it definitely is & soo true to life. Freya thinks she's about to be proposed to by her long time live-in boyfriend, Michael. But, he just wants to be "friends". With nowhere to go, Freya moves in w/her best guy friend Jack. Jack is a struggling Creative writer who wants to be famous, date young girls and get Freya out of his place. Cat, Freya's best female friend has given up on men & chooses the Single Road instead though keeps an open mind. She's a lawyer who bumbs into Freya's X-bf Michael on a joint case giving him hell for dumping Freya. Michael, tries his defense but loses poorly. Then, has other ideas on his mind which involves Cat. The story goes on & on as Freya tries everything from dating online to picking up men at the dogwalk in Central Park. She's in desperate need of a male companion for her sister's wedding which is 3 weeks away. Robin Sysman takes you into the mind of Freya, Jack, Michael, and Cat which is great & helps give you a difference of perspectives. This book was definitely a quick enjoyable & by far one of the funniest novels I've read this year, the infamous humor from, "Getting Over it" & "Running In Heels", by Anna Maxted.
Rating: Summary: Heart-Tugging Surprise Review: I have always liked the old best friends-fall in love scenario. But there are many out there, and most fall short of a satisfactory read. This particular one, while not an extremely original plot of bickering co-ed roommates (not unlike the movies Someone Like You or Reality Bites, actually resembling more of the latter because of the deliberate, edgy and rather bittersweet relationship between the two 'friends') scores because of its very real and very fleshed out characters. I especially found the self-depracating Freya and the obviously flawed Jack very refreshing and convincing. The whole book rings very true and the emotions that reverberate between the two friends are very cringeworthy because it was easy to imagine myself or my friends reacting in such an evidently human and imperfect manner. It is very believable and absorbing for the fact that the characters are not beyond reproach, and would do things most authors would avoid for their characters to do for fear that they might seem weak and unworthy. There are many merits to the book, the humor is sharp and embarassing when read in public (one laughs out loud); and for a book that is supposedly predictable and a light read, its ending was cleverly plotted enough to be a quite a surprise to me. It was subtle, like the blossoming feelings of growing love in reality, it is not ashamed of the mistakes that its characters make and does not attempt to explain away the flaws in its characters. Self-doubt is consistent throughout the story, but handled in such a manner by the author that it paints such a likely and therefore accurate portrait of the insecurities that can plague even the most composed of people, especially a woman in her thirties who often reminisces of a young and beautiful past. (very possible, no matter how much we are told that maturity is a blessing) All in all, it was a smart, tender, witty, heart-tugging and surprisingly delightful read that I really had not expected.
Rating: Summary: So Charming Review: I have been a big fan of chick lit since the Shopaholic series began. It's sort of my guilty pleasure. I also love pink dresses. So I am not ashamed to say that I purchased this book simply because of the pink dress on the cover.
Was I ever surprised! The book, while admittedly not containing the most complex plot, was definitely a step above chick lit. The characters were so well-developed, and I actually cared about them (as opposed to say, Cat's Meow, or even Diary of a Mad Bride, where the characters were amusing at best.)
Read it if you want a quick, highly entertaining story. PS- Jack is hot. I fell in love with him by the end.
