Summary: Worth getting
Review: Hello. The book's title is kind of misleading. It's not a book to teach you about hypnosis techniques but more of a guide of what a hypnotist should "already know". It talks alot about getting your practice started and gives you many tips and suggestions about how to succeed with basic to advance techniques. In my opinions, they really are all basic techniques. The beginnings of the book is great but later it feels as if the author is holding back saying you need to learn his 5path or 7 path hypnosis method to be able to help more clients and he suggest you take his courses. I felt this was his marketing ploy because he was holding back on descriptions of these method. He suggested that these are advance but i think they are basic. He just combined some basics sequentially together and give it a name, that's all. The field just don't have that great a standard yet. The book focus more on standardized approach to hypnosis then ericksonian style. It's a great review, refresher book for the hypnotherapist because these techniques discussed should already be known. If they aren't taught in your hypnosis certification course then the teachers are holding back. It's always about business for them of course. people gotta make a living somehow. the point is that this is a great review book on hypnosis techniques that you should already be competent at and guide you in how to set up your practice for success. it's not about the business of your practice but more of how to treat clients, setting up office, etc... I see this book as a guage for a quality basic skills needed to be competent in hypnosis. All this is just a man's opinion. Get the book yourself and rate it base on your standards. I just wanted to share "my views" on this book.

Summary: BUY THIS BOOK!
Review: Hypnosis and Hypnotherapy is a concise, easy to use volume of practical information. Excellent organization and readability make it my new favorite reference! It's as though Calvin Banyan took all of the tools and advice that made him successful and handed it to the reader on a silver platter, ready to use. Helpful for both the novice and veteran hypnotist/hypnotherapist, this book is a must have.

Summary: Not for beginners or casual Hypnotist
Review: I am new to hypnosis. I read the other reviews of this book, which I suspect where written by students and friends of the Author. I was ok with the book but the very first thing it says is that its not a how to book. Its a book of tips for somebody that wants to start a hypnotherapy business. Most tips are good and do give good insight into whats required to be a hypnotherapist for a living but are of little value to someone just wanting to find out more about hypnotism. It was the first Hypnotism book that I purchased and as a result was of little value to me. I was looking for a book that covered everything and had the impression thats what i was getting but I should read more reviews and not trust most of them. it does not have chapters per say like a regular book. There are tips. about 180 or so of them to be exact and each one is a paragraph to several pages. It was not written as a book but as several tips that he author uses in the day to day running of his business, and all strung together to be a book. But in my opinion not really a book. but of course I never authored a book so who am i to call it not a book. its more like 180 notes on what to do and what not to do. Not a complete reference by any means and not useful for anyone wanting to learn hypnotism. But to his credit he does know the business and is kind enough to put a flyer in the back of the book refering you to his $379.00 course on how to hypnotis properly. I sorta think the book is just advertising for the business and his class.

Summary: And then there's better hypnosis......
Review: I can not express enough of how helpful and powerful this book is. I have read numerous books on hypnotism and hypnotherapy. By far "Hypnosis and Hypnotherapy: Basic to Advanced Techniques for the Professional," by Banyan and Kein was the most fulfilling hypnosis book I have read so far for it touched on many aspects related to hypnotism in terms of business, ethics, specific induction procedures, working with the more "stubborn" clients, building confidence as a hypnotherapist, powerful hypnotic techniques and much more.
Tried and true, the hypnotic techniques taken from this book are highly efficient and highly effective. This book is a MUST HAVE for anyone who is serious about their hypnotherapy practice. Not only does it discuss the imporance of true age regression, Forgiveness and Parts Mediation Therapy, it gives many great tips in starting and maintaining a professional and successful business in hypnotherapy from proper phone etiquitte to clever advertising.
All of the information is highly organized and very straightforward. Often, I refer to this book only to find more golden tid-bits of information that I may have previously overlooked. "Hypnosis and Hypnotherapy" is an excellent reference book that serious hypnotherapists should own. I am definetly looking forward to Banyan's next book, "The Secret Language of Feelings."

Summary: A Wonderful Hypnotherapy Bible
Review: I found "Hypnosis and Hypnotherapy" to be one of the best resource books for my practice. It is very pracitcal, easy to use and has a wealth of information and suggestions by two masters in Hypnotherapy. Mr. Banyan has given us, the reader and hypnotist, an easy to use, very understandable text book, and the additional bonus tips are great. You feel like your back in class with Cal gently guiding you to the very best, successful Hypnotherapy session you can give a client. Thanks Cal, the book is great! Sonna Johnson

Summary: I bought the book, then signed up for Cal's training.
Review: I graduated from Cal Banyon's Hypnotherapy Certification training June 1, 2003. (About two weeks ago.) The thing that convinced me to sign up for the course was reading this book.

I particular, two items that Cal wrote convinced me that he was thorough and knew what he was talking about.

The first was his instruction to: "Always have your client go to the bathroom before the session, to prevent unnecessary interruption." This is the type of basic advice I want, and had never read before in any of the many books on hypnotherapy I own.

The second was his explanation of the changes he made to the Dave Elman hypnotic induction to produce the Elman-Banyon induction and the Elman-Banyon inductioin itself. The E-B induction has some modifications to the original Elman induction, but they are all explained and the changes made sense to me. I've read and seen (on video) other hypnotist's version of the Elman induction and they have invariably been significantly different from the original, with no explanation why. I figure they must work, or they wouldn't use them. But I like things to be explained so that I have confidence in them.

The book is clearly written. Well organized. Based on Cal's personal experience, as well as his training (by Gerald F Klein and others). It is written primarily for the person who is or is planning on being a professional hypnotherapist.

The book explains a very structured way of doing therapy, which the author has developed over several years of hypnotherapy practice. The beauty of this structured approach is that the hypnotist "sets up" the client to be succesful in future sessions, because it's known what procedures are going to be used in the future.

I'd like to finish by quoting from the forward to the book, written by it's co-author, Gerald F. Kein.

"Most of this information in this book is taken, and then improved upon by Cal, directly fom my classes. Cal Banyon has honored me greatly. Over the years many people have asked me to co-author a book. Until now, I never accepted any of these requests. ... This book is the first and only book in my long career ever presented to me that I can totally and enthusiastically endorse not only the material but also the ethics and professionalism oif the author."

Summary: A TOUCH OF FINESSE
Review: I have read lots of books about hypnosis, but"Hypnosis and Hypnotherapy Basic to Advanced Techniques for the Professional" is the most educational book I've read on the subject. The book explains hypnosis and the hypnosis session from A to Z in a most understandable way. It gives the reader a clearer understanding of what we, the hypnotherapists, are trying to accomplish in each step of the therapy as well as each step of each session. What I find equally as valuable about the book as its great coverage of the ABC's of hypnosis, is its information , in the form of bonus tips, that add a touch of finesse to the ABC's, or basics, of a hypnosis session. These assure that the client will have a successful session. I refer back to this book often.
