Rating: Summary: Not as good as it should have been... Review: This book is a valuable read for one reason: it sheds SOME light on Hillary's background and the issues about which she truly cares. Were the book tailored to that purpose exclusively, it would be an excellent work. But Senator Clinton repeatedly attempts to sneak references to the many controversies surrounding her time in the White House, opening the door to these topics but approaching them only on the surface. In short, if Hillary wanted to write a tell-all, she should have. If she wanted to produce an in-depth treatment of her political convictions and priorities, she should have. By attempting to combine elements of both, she does neither well. The result is a book that starts quickly, drags tediously through the middle, and then picks up steam once again at the end. But the perspective is unique and justifies the time spent to labor through Living History.
Rating: Summary: I love Hillary.....I HATE this book Review: I sincerely cannot believe that anyone can offer positive commentary on Mrs. Clinton's book. This is unfortunate as I was most anxious to buy and read her perspective on the Clinton years. I have to wonder with all of the friends reviewing the drafts whether it was the case of too many cooks spoiling the broth, or if being mentioned in the book prevented any critical suggestions from being made. The editing is awful, it is terrible to read, it has no flow. And the content? Even for me, a dyed in the wool liberal, Clinton era cheerleader, the perspective of Hillary on daily life and events was melodramatic to say the least. It was like biography meets grocery store aisle Harrlequin romance. Completely unbelievable and over the top. In the aspects of the book where the content was not as dangerous or controversial, the book reads like stereo instructions. I feel that I must save the populus from the reviewers who are obviously buying the book for their coffee table (or are mentioned in its text). SAVE YOURSELF. Do NOT buy this book. If you want to support Hillary, buy her previous book -- it was a far greater work than this drivel.
Rating: Summary: Bravo! Review: A terrific and honest account of the Clinton Presidency. Hillary revealed what she needed to about the Lewinsky scandal, without caving into her conservative critics by backing down from what was essentially a Republican power grab in spite of the country's wishes. Despite being hurt and embarrassed by Bill Clinton, she did not let her personal feelings distort a marvelous Presidency. And by revealing Ken Starr's incestuous relationship with the conservative Washington establishment that passionately hated Bill Clinton, she finally shed light on the "vast ring-wing conspiracy." More importantly though, she spoke eloquently about the moderate Clinton agenda and how their "third way," which often conflicted with the entrenched politics of not only Republicans but also Democrats. Despite their travails with impeachment and party politics, they managed to prevail in their quest to make the country stronger in every conceivable way.
Rating: Summary: The memoirs of an intelligent, thoughtful woman Review: This is a fascinating memoir, which will inspire many women and young girls. Folks who don't like this book are probably upset with the author for not dwelling more on her reactions to her husband's sexual infidelities. People like scandal, in any form, and many probably bought the book to read about scandal. To her credit, that is not what Hillary delivers. As she writes in the book, she is a private, reserved woman who often keeps her own counsel about emotional matters. And I think she deserves her privacy. Instead of baring her soul to satisfy the prurient interests of the masses, Hillary has written a powerful book that documents her hundreds of experiences in the White House and traveling the world on behalf of our nation. Her story is, at times, somewhat exhausting to read. To imagine living that life is beyond me. But I admire her guts and her intelligence, and I enjoyed this book.
Rating: Summary: An Absolutely Marvellous Book !!! Review: What does it matter if it is fact or fiction anyway? Can't everybody see how honest and an outpouring of her heart this book is? Instead of reading this "political" book by analyzing everything so dogmatically, read this book with a compassionate heart and open mind. Hillary Clinton is a role model for all women, and "Living History" is absolutely MARVELOUS!!! You will not regret buying this book. As I was reading it, I could feel ,coming right out of the pages, her pain and her struggle to be herself in such a cynical world; I can't believe how she got through day to day alive. She is truly a strong and an exceptional woman; reading her book helped me in my own life. If you want to help your daughter grow up as an independent, strong woman, suggest that she read "Living History." THANK YOU HILLARY FOR WRITING THIS WONDERFUL BOOK!
Rating: Summary: UNBELIEVABLE ability to lie and lie and lie... Review: This is the typical liberal/Democratic Party hogwash that Hillary (or her ghost writer) and Bill, along with the rest of the Democratic Party, have tried to feed Americans for the last thirty years! Even with Hillary, she takes no personal responsibility. It's always the other (Republican) guy's fault! She makes that clear in her book. She expects us to believe that although smoke was found in every "room" of her life, there was no fire. Aside from her personal scandals (all of which were formulated by a right-wing conspiracy), her ideology clearly aligns her with the likes of Marx, Lenin, and other communists/socialists. I don't think she is ashamed of that! Worthless life, worthless book.
Rating: Summary: Power struggles and family issues. Review: This is probably the only political autobiography I've read other than INSIDE THE THIRD REICH by Albert Speer. While this one is significantly different from Speer's book, some unpleasant government personalities play parts in both stories. At the time this one came out, the focus of attention seemed to be on Hillary's reaction to Bill's infidelity. While that event certainly plays an important part in the latter part of the book, most of the tale discusses events in the Senator's life from her high school years (as a Goldwater Girl, of all things) on up. Athough she expresses fury at husband Bill over the "Monica" incident, throughout most of the book she uniformly supports all of the the President's policies (or virtually all) as well as his personal character; so this one isn't necessarily for readers looking for a tell-all soap-opera type story. I found most interesting the political struggles between the Clintons and Congressional Republicans like Newt Gingrich and Tom Delay; the long combat with the story's villain, Ken Starr; the collection of anecdotes about the author, Bill, Chelsea, and pets; some amusing (if unflattering) accounts of prominent Republicans like Gingrich and Strom Thurmond (a lot more stuff on Gingrich, though much of it is well-known from other sources); and the various "I-was-chums-with-famous-people" tales about Jackie Onasis, Tony Blair, Boris Yeltsin, and Stevie Wonder. Also, Mick Jagger and Mother Theresa both get a mention (although not at the same time). I heard the Abridged Audio Edition, as read by the author.
Rating: Summary: girl power Review: I didn't initially think I would enjoy "Living History." I don't know all that much about politics, and even less about foreign policy, which takes up a lot of this book. However, I am a fan of women's rights and will always read a good story about a strong woman. Many people need to read this book. Hillary took a figurehead position of government (most first ladies do not have a political agenda) and used it to reform health care, child care, women's rights, children's rights and civil rights. And when you add the Republican charge that never stopped attacking the Clinton administration, I'm surprised she triumphed. It is really a great story of a midwestern girl made done good. It made me feel good - and made me see that no matter my station in life, I can help others around me and around the world. It's definitely worth a read.
Rating: Summary: What a woman! Review: I have to give it to Hillary Clinton. Her life story is certainly an interesting one. I appreciated the opportunity to get some insight into how she became the strong-willed, capable person woman of today.
Rating: Summary: Amazing Review: Hillary Clinton is an amazing woman. I found this book very interesting and her style of writing kept me reading. One of the best books I've read in a long time.
