Rating: Summary: Esperanza rising Review: Esperanza Rising Pam Munoz Ryan T. Chung period 5When Esperanza's father dies, Esperanza and her mother flee to California to work. Esperanza was not used to the works and the enviroment, for she was born rich; however, she gets used to the work quickly. Esperanza and her mother works hard and lives quite happily, until a dust storm takes over the land. Her mother soon falls ill and her only hope to save her mother is to bring her grandmother from Mexico to California. One of the part I liked about this book is in the beginning, when Esperanza and her father goes for a walk and listens to the earth"s heart beating. It showed that everything is alive around us. I tried to listen to the earth's heartbeat too, in my back yard, but heard nothing. I will go outside with my father next time to listen to the heartbeat, just like the book. I also liked the part when Esperanza's mother and Abuelita re-unites(?) again. It was such a happy part, I was crying while reading it. I can't imagine myself being seperated from my mother for such a long time, thinking of the possibility of never meeting again. My favorite part of this book is how Pam Munoz Ryan puts in quotes from Mexico. All of the quotes have deep meanings that teaches us how to behave. My favorite one is "Wait a little while and the fruit will fall into your hand." This means to be patient and wait. I think I should use this quote on my friends someday.
Rating: Summary: Esperanza! Review: Yes! I would definitely recommend that you read this book to or with your children/students. Students will cheer for Esperanza. There are many characters that your students will be able to identify with. Excellent!
Rating: Summary: Esperanza Rising Review: The book that I am reading is called Esperanza Rising. It is by Pam Munoz Ryan and she also wrote the book called Riding Freedom. This book is mostly about a 13 year old girl named Esperanza Oretga. She is living a wonderful, pleasant, rich, and comfortable life at a ranch that her father owns called El Rancho de las Rosas. Many people lived at the ranch like Ezperanza's family, the house servants, the vaqueros, the campesinos, and Hortensia, the housekeeper whom Esperanza loves very much. The next day was Esperanza's birthday and she was waiting for a big celebration like every year. But, when her papa went out with all the other ranchers to deliver grapes, he didn't come back. Alfonso (Hortensia's husband) and Miguel (Hortensia's son) just came back with a big wagon revealing Papa's body. The day after Papa died was her big celebration birthday, but she didn't have it because of her father's death. He had bought her a birthday gift before, and when she opened it, it was a doll that looked like an angel and she had a whole collection. Later, her evil uncles Tio Luis and Tio Marco came to her house and asked for Mama's hand in marriage. Of course Mama said no, and that was when all the trouble happened. Tio Luis and Tio Marco made it very hard for Esperanza and her family and later, they burned the house down. So, Esperanza's family decided to leave secretly and Mama lied to Tio Luis and said she would marry him. They had to leave to California to work there in the fields, and since Abuelita, Esperanza's grandmother was going to come later because of her broken ankle, they were having a hard time. The reason I liked this book was because it really reminded me of what I¡¯ve been through. Sure, I haven¡¯t always been in harsh situations like a fire, death of family, or separation, but it really resembles my life. The quote that really helped me and touched me said,¡± He who falls today may rise tomorrow.¡± Esperanza is almost like me. She is 13 years old, she is very depressed in life, and she believes that she will, someday rise again. I also believe that I will fall, but I will always rise again. This book taught me that I can be strong in life, and whenever I feel lonely like I am in a dark pit, I am sure to reach the top of the mountain and be strong again. I also liked this book a lot because all of the chapters were named after a fruit or vegetable and there was a reason why in each chapter. The reason I disliked this book was because it had a lot of words I didn¡¯t understand in here. They had words in Spanish I didn¡¯t understand so I tried to read the words surrounding the Spanish word, but I still couldn¡¯t understand it. Some of the words had the meaning with it, but some words didn¡¯t. ¡°Then she gave her a phony smile and said, ¡°¢¯Entiendes?¡±¡± Another reason I didn¡¯t like this book was because a snobby girl name Marta and all her American friends would always make fun of Esperanza just because she didn¡¯t know how to work. One time, because she didn¡¯t know how to use the broom they said,¡±¡±La Cenicienta! Cinderella!¡± she laughed.¡± My favorite part in this book was when Esperanza, Mama, Hortensia, Miguel, and Alfonso were on the train. Esperanza expected it to be pretty and comfortable, but instead it turned out to be dirty, crowded, and very uncomfortable. The train was filled with peasants that were looking for a job in California. Esperanza had to realize that now she was a peasant too. What really meant something to me was when a poor grandmother gave Mama 2 red chickens when she only had 6 chicken and had 10 children to feed. That lady also gave a peasant crawling on the floor some food and money. I couldn¡¯t believe that a poor person gave a peasant money and food when she was poor herself. This book is one of my favorites and I definitely recommend you to read it yourself.
Rating: Summary: Hope Review: This is a wonderfully colorful story following Ezperanza to America- beautifully written, captivating.
Rating: Summary: Review for Esperanza Rising Review: This realistic book is well written about a girl who comes from Mexico to California because her papa dies and her mother can not work to support the hole ranch and then their new land lord (Esperanza's uncle) burns their home to ruins because her mother tells him that she would not marry him. Then she tells him she will marry him but she and Esperanza sneak off to California and he is furious. And I will leave it there but that is just half the fun in the book. I could not pronounce some of the Spanish words but other wise it is a great book and I would recommend this book to anyone who likes realistic books.*****

Rating: Summary: Esparanza Rising is a Good Book!!!! Review: The book Esparanza Rising, by Pam Munoz Ryan, is really well written. It has a good plot and is exciting so you don't want to stop reading it. I especially like that all the Chapter Names are foods/fruits in Spanish. I think that was a good idea. My favorite part of the book was when Abulita came, and Esparanza and her mother were so happy. I think the author should make a sequel. I know I would like it!
