Rating: Summary: Pretty good, but long, drawn-out ending. Review: (Warning! Killer revealed in this review...) I love a good whodunit, and most of the Prey books are that, or have some accomplice revealed near the end. Much as I like Davenport, and his detective methods, I was disappointed to find out the identity of the killer halfway through the book. I thought "That's it? Now I have to read 200 pages of Davenport trying to find out what I just did?" Since the bookjacket mentioned lots of plot twists, I kept waiting, right until the last page, to find out someone else had been involved, or that there was some other secret. But no, you just witness Davenport digging up more and more of Audrey's past here, and start to see motives behind everything. To me, the best part of the Prey books is trying to figure out the killer(s) or mystery lover. Sandford does such a good job in many of his books, that it is always stright downhill once we find out the mystery and it turns into just a chase. At least the personal side-stories aren't as nauseating as those in the Alex Cross novels (Kiss the Girls, Along Came a Spider etc). All in all, a pretty good story. I'm just glad I didn't start writing down all the characters at the bank once I started getting confused with the merger alliances.
Rating: Summary: So So Prey Review: I've been a Davenport fan since "Rules of Prey" and have read every book in the Prey series since. If Secret Prey is your first Sandford story then by all means go ahead and read the others that came before b/c this storyline is little on the slow moving side. Since I'm a fan I'm going to continue reading the rest of the book but if you're new to the Prey series, you're best bet is to check out Sudden Prey or any of the others.
Rating: Summary: another a-1 thriller Review: sanford is like the energizer bunny just keeps going and going. loved the plot and story line it will be interesting to see if lucas "weathers along with sherrill. really thought i had this villian peged but was mildly fooled. a must read!!!
Rating: Summary: Return of a great character but a boring case. Review: The best reason to read this book is to keep up with the latest developments of the central figure in the "Prey" series: Lucas Davenport. The "Secret Prey" villain generates no excitement, and is never a real threat to Davenport or the reader. Here's hoping the next "Prey" book brings back the active Davenport and an exciting and credible villain to interest us. This was just tedious and boring.
Rating: Summary: It's getting old Review: I think I liked the old messed up Lucas better than this one. Now he's finacially secure, #1 with a gun in the cities, constantly getting laid but yet he's whipped. I have a tough time believing a guy as tough as he in some aspects is such a wus in others.
Rating: Summary: HUGE DISAPPOINTMENT! Review: John Sandford has historically been one of my favorite authors and the "prey" series among my favorite books, but this one PLAIN STINKS. Ridiculous character names (i.e. Bone, Weiner), grammatical errors, editing errors, and a rather slow moving plot plague this book. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone--especially anyone who hasn't read a "prey" book. Don't take this as an example of Sandford's work--this is worse!
Rating: Summary: Great fun read. Review: A friend suggested that I read some of the prey series books. The first one I read, Sudden Prey, was ok but nothing special. However, after reading Secret Prey, I can understand why so many people enjoy the Prey books. Secret Prey was good reading from beginning to end. The villian was great and there was several scenes of humor that had me laughing out-loud. I look forward to another Lucas Davenport book.
Rating: Summary: The best writer of mystery/thillers I've read! Review: All of John Sanford's "Prey" novels are excellent! I often go back and reread all of them when a new one comes out. Which is why I was a little surprised by the complete abandonment of Weather. In "Night Prey" when Lucas and Weather were getting together, she insists that he come and watch her operate...afterwords, (ppg. 168-169) she explains to him that her job requires her to be "cold. I can't get involved. I like patients ...but I can't afford to go into the operating room wondering if I'm doing the right thing..." She also says that in her "surgeon persona" she is "different" and that she "has to make brutal decisions." When Sandford paired these two up, I thought he had finally written a woman who was right for Lucas...who wouldn't always agree with Lucas' actions, but could understand and be there for him. It is a shame that Mr. Sandford made a pretty critical change to this part of Weather for a storyline, but maybe he'll being her back. The "Prey" series is a must read for anyone who likes mystery/thillers and/or serial novels. Mr. Sanford is arguably the best in this genre especially with the depressing, character-killing, uninspired work that Patricia Cornwell had been churnning out. I reccomend all 9!
Rating: Summary: It was awsome all the way through!! The best yet!!! Review: I thought the story was super kept me on edge the entie book. John Sandford is the best. Being from Minnesota it is fun to read about all the streets and places I have been. He is the greatest!!!!!
Rating: Summary: It's good, but not THAT good... Review: Not quite up to par. Lucas is more than a tad boring now that he's clinically depressed. For a smart guy, he sure doesn't know how to get some help. Perhaps Sandford is getting tired of inhabiting the Lucas character? It seems to happen eventually with almost every series mystery writer (Kellerman, Burke). Perhaps Lucas should get a visit from Kay Scarpetta in the next Prey book; they could mope around together and bore each other to death! (Note to author: that would be a dead-on blockbuster if Cornwell is interested...)I'm glad I wasn't the only one to note the glaring error on page 114. Sandford should be justifiably irked at his editor. The banking industry doesn't exactly make riveting plot-following. I put this book down several times before finishing, something I've never done with a Sandford book. Hope the author is cranking away on the next one, and cheering Lucas up a bit!
