Rating: Summary: A colossal waste of time! Review: I really wanted to like this but didn't even come close. The characters were barely 1 dimensional and the somewhat twisty plot wasn't nearly clever enough to overcome the plodding writing. There are no shades of gray or ambiguity here - the good guys wear white hats and those who don't agree with them are beneath contempt.
Rating: Summary: more! I want more! Review: This is Vince Flynn's first novel. I was absolutely captivated by it and wanted the story to go on and on, even after its 600 pages. He brings forth great characters; some heroic, some despicable, but all richly drawn. The story line is fascinating as well, with a theme that I have sometimes pondered: how do we get REAL change in this bloated government? Vince Flynn has spoken for many of us citizens in the most interesting way. Kudos!
Rating: Summary: The Book has no resolution!! :-( Review: I was enthralled wiht the topic and liked the cover and the beginning of the book was fine. It dragged a bit in the middle, but the plot was interesting enough. As expected, as things (apparently) began to wrap up toward the end, there were some interesting twists, BUT (and this is totally weird) the book didn't really resolve the initial conflict laid out at the beginning. There was no outcome! The plot starts like this: basically some ex-SEALs, funded by a rich guy, begin to take out some congressmen and submit a demand for the politicians to set partisan bickering and special interests aside and balance the budget immediately. Congress is right at the voting stage of the budget and locked in wrangling with the White House, and these "terrorists" are initially ignored, and so goes the intrigue and the plot thickens. Well, without wasting my and your time, the end of the book does nothing to resolve this issue!! I was stupified. It didn't even leave us with a sense of what happens to most of the main characters in the book. Weird. Very weird. Well, there was more to read after the book ended. There was an excerpt from Transfer of Power to supposedly whet the appetite for more. Surely, I thought, this next book would be the sequel. I am not terribly thrilled by sequels, but if that is the way they want to do it, OK. But guess what? Transfer of Power is a whole 'nuther story! New Presidential administration and everything. NOTHING to indicate that the most important question of Term Limits will get resolved!!!!
Rating: Summary: No sale Review: If you can't buy into the premise - or even just go along with it, after all, it's only a story - then you cannot really enjoy the ride. That sums up my feelings about this book. Some of the characters - particularly the President - were too clueless to be believed. The author does deserve credit for the extensive research on the tools of the CIA, FBI, and Navy SEALS. But there were too many characters and subplots to wade through too make for a good ending; too many loose ends to tie up. I like the genre, but can't recommend this one.
Rating: Summary: Had a hard time picking it up.. Review: Rather boring, dull. I've read much better "political thrillers." It's good for insomnia, though.
Rating: Summary: -- Unbelievable tripe, conspriracy fodder for militia crowd Review: If you had a half a star rating (or no star) I would have given it that. I expect this to be a big seller at survivalist shows since it feeds the conspiracy paranoia and distrust of the government common to that crowd. The amount of "research" and "fact" in the book is on par with that found in most "men's action thrillers," minimal or nonexistent, the characters are flat and stereotypical, as is the portrayal of government and our political process. This book will be a joy to those who feel the ballot box should be replaced by the bullet. Timely it may be, a thriller it ain't, drivel it is..
Rating: Summary: Cardboard characters, limping dialogue, weak plot Review: Basically I finished this book because I paid $6.99 for it in an aiport bookstore, had nothing else to read for a while, and because I started it. Bad reasons all. This is a weak, sour, unintelligent novel, populated by two-dimensional and largely interchangeable characters. The dialogue is colorless, humorless, and pedestrian. While the author seems to have some familiarity with the U.S. governmental system, with covert operations, and with Washington D.C., the portrayal of people, motives, and institutions is unpersuasive and frequently just unbelievable. The title is somewhat catchy but to the extent that this book appeals to some readers, the appeal is based on unrelieved cynicism about the political process. Don't waste your time.
Rating: Summary: Beautiful!!!!! Review: If you are interested in politics you'll love this book. Especially if you dislike liberal politicians....open season on them in this book. I couldn't put it down. Best book I've read since Atlas Shrugged.
Rating: Summary: A waste of time. Review: 400 pages of unbelievable, awkward reading. From the unrealistic "address the nation" presidential speeches, to the virtually glitch-free assassinations (wasn't there anyone walking around DC those days?) this book had me shaking my head all the way through.
Rating: Summary: The first book I haven't been able to put down in a long tim Review: An avid reader of fiction, and particularly murder mysteries and espionage, I fell upon this book by accident, ecpecting it to be "just another fairly good book". From the minute I picked it up, I am having difficulty going about my daily routine because I simply can't put it down...it is a page turner like I haven't read in a long, long time. I typically don't read 600 page books because I get bored...that's not a word I'd use in describing this one. A great read!
