Rating: Summary: We use this book over any other. Review: I'm an MCSE and work as a Network Administrator for the Tropicana Hotel in Las Vegas, NV. We have two networks - one Ethernet and one Token Ring. This book has been invaluable as a reference for day to day use. Some of those who rate it low are probably not ready to tackle the more complex issues of NT. This definately is NOT a study guide, it's a professional reference book! Mark
Rating: Summary: Great NT overview, leaves no stone unturned Review: I really enjoyed this NT book. I read it cover-to-cover. Most technical books are too dry for this sort of reading. The book is huge, but not that much different than a good fiction series. Although I used MCSE-targeted books to get my MCSE, when I installed a domain at my workplace, I used only this book. The CD sucked and some details were wrong (browsing) or poorly covered (setting up printers). All-in-all, better than anything else I've seen.
Rating: Summary: The Best! Review: A year ago a co-worker and myself went through the MS Server course. It was ok, but did nothing to perpare us for a NT rollout at our company. We each picked up a copy of Mark's book and now commonly refer to it as the bible.....hmmm how do you think we should set this up? dunno get the bible....you will here this alot coming from our cubicle. Very excellent book, helped me pass the Server 4.0 exam and saved us alot of install/config headaches over the last year. Thanks Mark for a straight forward reading book that adds allittle humor at times. What eles can I say, its GROOVY BABY!!! Get it!
Rating: Summary: Wow Review: All I can say is Wow. It amazes me that in the world of NetAdmin there are folks out there without a sense of humor. To Mr. Minasi and all the folks who contributed to this writing I say Job Well Done! For those Lamers and Whiners who get easily distracted by the authors sense of humor---got a solution--go seek employment at Microsoft. Their writing seems to be the dry alley you seek in the NT World.
Rating: Summary: Good Reading, Easy to Understand, Excellent Layout. Review: I have just read about half of this book, It is layed out well, easy to understand (even for us less knowledgable newbie's to the computer profession) I think that this would be a good reference for an IT job. I look forward to fininshing it up and going on to the A+, MCSE/D exams. This book is a plus for easy understanding.
Rating: Summary: Out-of-date instruction on DNS Review: The book provides out-of-date info on NT 4.0 DNS configuration, making the whole process confusing and does not do justice to the NT 4.0's ncie DNS feature. Contrary to the author claim, NT DNS can be easily configured with the GUI NT DNS adminstrator and it works well with UNIX BIND DNS. In fact, Microsoft's white paper on NT DNS provides correct and concise info on configuring and using NT DNS, and it is free for downloading on Microsoft's web site. I recommend that users of NT DNS read Microsoft's free white paper for DNS configuration. Another point is that the new edition added a lot of pages to the earlier edition, but not much more info (added a lot of personal stories, jokes, etc.). The new edition is a typical example for making a useful book less useful.
Rating: Summary: Best Technical Book I've EVER Read (and I've read a LOT) Review: Why can't everyone write like Mr. Minasi? He has proven that a very readable, highly technical book can be written! I actually looked forward to "curling up" with this book every day (although you really can't curl up with a book this big). It's extremely readable. Any intimidation I've had about approaching this topic is completely gone. Ignore those few who complained about Mark's sense of humor. It's very refreshing, and doesn't get in the way at all! Thanks Mr. Minasi!
Rating: Summary: Great book for learning NT Review: This book was my starting point for installing a small LAN in my AF squadron. I had no knowledge of NT when I started, and I still have more to learn, but this book taught me the basics on up. And this book is not a Microsoft advertisement! I bought a couple of books on Exchange Server 5.5, and they seemed to be of the opinion that there could be no better product. This book is straightforward about what NT can do, what it should do, and what it can't do.
Rating: Summary: Excellent! Review: Best overview of NT Server I've come across. The author explains concepts and detail in an easy-to-understand manner, and also throws in bits of gossip about *why* particular things in NT are the way they are. I bought it as a companion to the Sybex MCSE Server and Workstation study guides, and I think it complements them by outlining general principles in greater detail. It is an excellent one-volume reference book. My only reservations are minor: the author's sense of humour occasionally gets distracting, although most of the time it helps the flow of things, and the book is showing signs of age in its structure, with some newer topics inserted slightly out of context. I believe the book deserves a ground-up rewrite in the next couple of editions.
Rating: Summary: Excellent Real-World Practical NT Server Resource Review: Best step-by-step procedures, loaded with easy-to-understand diagrams. Perfect for NT System administrators. Gives real world problems and practical solutions. The fact that it has so many reviews on this site, speaks for itself. A Must-have.
