Rating: Summary: Good Humor and Decent Rebuttal Review: Franken's book succeeds in poking fun at Limbaugh, and should satisfy any reader seeking to read it for the humor. But if one is seeking to find a refutation of Limbaugh's beliefs, this is only a decent source. A better source though is The Great Limbaugh Con by Charles Kelly. I highly recommended it for anyone who disagrees with Limbaugh, or anyone who agrees with him and is open minded.
Rating: Summary: The sound of gunfire you hear... Review: ...is humorist/ comedian Al Franken shooting himself in the foot. The title of this book is really a description of far too great a percentage of its content--sniping at Rush Limbaugh over his build as if both were still in junior high. There are entire chapters given over to it. Is this the same guy who played "Saturday Night Live's" effete Stuart Smalley, who treated his own identity crisis using a mirror? I felt cheated, after buying both of Limbaugh's books so that I'd know what I was talking about when I took issue with his ideas with Conservative acquaintances (they only SAY Liberals are knee-jerk naysayers). Now here comes one of America's most skilled political humorists making like a seventh-grader. There are some valid points in this book. But BOY do you have to dig for them!
Rating: Summary: Sock it to 'em, Frankie! Review: Since Al has said it all already, I will be brief:Mr. Franken is one of those few men who wholly succeeds in exposing the vast, vast, vast hypocrisy that is the Republican Good Ol' Boy Bloated Male Party, and does it to the point of making his readers wet their liberal pants in laughter. He is extremely intelligent, "dead-on", and funny....
Rating: Summary: Franken harpoons the hypocrisy of the far right! Review: I am a moderate with a tendency to vote Republican, and consider myself a conservative Christian. However, the hypocrisy of those leading the party and the Christian Coalition continues to alienate me. This is the hypocrisy that Franken attacks so well, and many of the reviewers here either don't see this or just refuse to. Franken does not attack the conservative values; he illuminates the inconsistencies and lies of those who tend to profess them the loudest, as these are usually the same individuals who harshly criticize the moral failings of others. Furthermore, the destruction of Limbaugh's many "facts" was long overdue. I have yet to hear anyone here or in the conservative media refute Franken's data. Well done!!! The fat jokes were a bit too harsh, though.
Rating: Summary: Laughed out loud! Review: I thoroughly enjoyed listening to Al Franken read his book on cassette recording. From the start (Jean Kirkpatrick's NYTimes review of the book and denial of her love affair with Franken), I was hooked. Yes, some of the humor was rather juvenile (e.g. the name-calling), but that was often when I laughed the hardest. It would just sneak up on me; and Franken's delivery was so emphatic and convincing! Furthermore, it is clear that Franken is an extremely intelligent, knowledgeable, and discerning fellow. I loved the stories of his family -- particularly enjoyed the efforts he went to in order to keep his brother from being drafted. I was sorry when it was over. It made my commute a pleasure. Thanks Al!
Rating: Summary: informative, hilarious, irreverant, and delightful!! Review: If you are either a)inquistive b)intelligent c)lean even slightly left c)a Saturday Night Live fan d)interested in politics but don't want to read a book that makes you feel stupid and uninformed (capital gains? What's that?)you MUST read this book. Al Franken is a humorist, an philanthropist, a partipant in the "adventures of politics", a wry satirist, an intelligent and wonderful man. Buy this book and crack the spine over and over!
Rating: Summary: Hilarious Critique of Limbaugh & Followers Review: This book was a quick and entertaining read. Franken annihilates Limbaugh's claims and exposes him for the publicity hound/hatemonger/hypocrite that he is. Unfortunately, in the process Franken employs a lot of the very tactics he criticizes, such as mocking Limbaugh for his weight problem--that's why I won't give it five full stars.
Rating: Summary: The humor is infantile and the book is just plain boring. Review: Franken is a third-rate comic and has written a third-rate book
Rating: Summary: Mentioning Rush Limbaugh in your title WILL boost sales!!! Review: Other than that, however, I found little substance in this otherwise unfunny book. My sister-in-law purchased my copy as a gift, knowing I listened regularly to Rush. I thought that maybe Al Franken would have something of interest to say regarding Rush --- instead, he just poked fun at Limbaugh's weight, which is somewhat out-of-date now (Has Franken even SEEN Rush lately?) I never thought Franken was that funny to begin with. He's even less so in print. Note to sister-in-law: Next time I'd prefer a gift-subscription to the LIMBAUGH LETTER!
Rating: Summary: Political Satire Review: The title of this book is the funniest thing about it. It kind of downhill after that. That may be partly because I'm not that politically minded a person. Frankly I was not all that familiar with most of the people mentioned in the book. A great deal of the book was not humorous, but just political.
