Rating: Summary: Mr. Franken's no ruder than Mr. Limbaugh, just righter. Review: I thought enough of this book to mail a copy to Bruce Tinsdale, the creator of the often insulting and oftener inaccurate comic strip "Mallard Fillmore." Mr. Tinsdale, outrageously overreacting to a story arc in (the far superior) "Doonesbury," once claimed that there was "no hate" in Mr. Limbaugh's show and that Pat Buchanan was (can you believe this?) not a Nazi (Well, okay, maybe he's not an actual member of a group that specifically identifies itself as Nazi, but the sentiments are all there.). This book convincingly refutes both statements.Don't get me wrong. Mr. Franken's very rude in this book, and, although Mr. Limbaugh has attacked many people on the basis of their physical appearance (ditto (if you'll pardon the expression) their past relationships), it really wasn't becoming of Mr. Franken to return what Mr. Limbaugh has given to so many others with QUITE as much verve. But I found this book educational and entertaining, and no matter how rude Mr. Franken is, Mr. Limbaugh has been so much ruder, with much less evidence of humor.
Rating: Summary: The REAL Way Things Ought To Be Review: Leave it to Al Franken, mastermind for many years of Saturday Night Live's finest sketches, to finally shed some light on the bewildering phenomenon that is Rush Limbaugh's popularity. Franken's witty collection of essays expose the fraudulence and sheer stupidity of Limbaugh's truthless rantings. Sure Rush, we all know that styrofoam is biodegradable. Exposing Limbaugh's true colors, particularly his less than lengthy history of voting in elections and his receipt of unemployment despite countless tirades berating the entire government, Franken skillfully demonstrates that no truly educated person could actually believe the rubbish spewed forth from Limbaugh's jowels, as demonstrated by his "dittoheads'" complete absence of intellect. Although Franken is farfetched in his assertion that Bill Clinton is the greatest president of this century, the book is otherwise a masterpiece. Rush Limbaugh is a Big Fat Idiot and Other Observations gives creedence to the bumper sticker slogan "I think, therefore I don't listen to Rush Limbaugh." If Rush is Right, I'll gladly take what's Left.
Rating: Summary: Franken offers humor in the face of the humorless right wing Review: Al Franken -- famous for his role as Stuart Smalley -- writes a scathingly funny piece that directs an "indirect middle finger" to the Right Wing. Well actually, not all of them. In fact, Franken offers some positive remarks about Pat Buchanan, Bob Dole, Bob Dornan, Newt Gingrich, etc. Although he strongly disagrees with their ideas and find their anecdotes flawed, Franken doesn't totally dismiss them. The only character he attacks consistently -- of course -- is Rush (hence the title: "Rush Limbaugh is a Big, Fat Idiot"). Like what P.J. O'Rourke does for the "Conservative America," Franken sparks the fires of liberal thought. He includes the a hilarious situational perspective of war that includes all the Right Wingers -- who hypocrtically label Clinton as a draft dodger -- who did NOT even participate in Vietnam. He includes Buchanan who claimed to have a chronic knee injury; nevermind the fact that he jogs daily. Without a doubt this is a great book for those who are and are not even interested in politics. I strongly encourage anybody who likes to laugh at Right Wingers to purchase this book.
Rating: Summary: i never knew i was a democrat until i read this book Review: it is absolutely hysterical the absolute best political satire i have read and i look foward to more of Al Franken's Work. I wasn't sure if Franken's humor would translate over form SNL but he proved him self to be a trendous comedian in any forum.
Rating: Summary: Al Franken says what I've been thinking for years! Review: Al Franken has managed to put into words thoughts that I (and I'm sure others) have had for years now. He throws in some very quotable quotes (I enjoy a few from Pat Robertson myself), and makes us laugh at the lunacy of the right wing...which isn't all that hard to. My sincere thanks to Mr. Franken for writing this book and for making me laugh from start to finish. I look forward to reading his new book and expect much of the same. I recommend 'Rush Limbaugh is a Big Fat Idiot' to anyone who has a sense of humor about politics and life in general. Well, maybe it's not a laugh for the Christian Coalition or for Limbaugh, but that's what makes it great!
Rating: Summary: Franken is no idiot. (He is a subhuman though). Review: Reading through a cavalcade of unintelligent Ditto-head musings, I'm convinced that none of them really understand Franken's polemics. More than half of them smacking of the same tactics of mass-denunciation that they claim Franken employs. First of all, I think this opus is one of the most insidious piece of literature put out by the left, tantamount to Shavian-level genius. Second, Franken is intellegent enough to know that if he wrote a book criticizing this person for the Republican party, that his (Limbaugh's) blind followers would by it. Yeah, yeah, yeah, so the book is full of contridictions and bending over for a cheap laugh along the way, blah, blah, blah. So what? The dumb goys went out and bought it and made the misanthropic Jew even wealthier. Echoing Dorian Grey's thoughts about the Jewish playwrite in Wilde's Dorian Grey "A most offensive brute." To me yes. But he dosen't have my money (not that he needs it).
Rating: Summary: Well-documented, well-written and, well, funny! Review: Al Franken scores big here with a well-written and extensively documented book that gives Rush Limbaugh and his ilk a highly-deserved rasberry. I could have done without all the fat jokes, though (after all, Al, Rush has lost the weight, and you're still homely as hell). I made a point of reading Rush's first book before reading Franken's tome. They're both good reads, and wrap themselves in effective humour...the frightening part is that Rush really seems to think he speaks for most Americans. Franken's just speaking the truth. Buy it. Read it. You'll love it...and if you're a flaming, raging, Limbaugh-loving type, my advice is this: Get over yourself.
Rating: Summary: Franken did what the media didn't have the guts to do! Review: Radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh has had a radio program marked by recklessness, viciousness, and unintended hilarity (He once said that styrofoam was biodegradable). Until the mid-1990's, he received a free pass from the same media he excoriates as biased against the Right (Ted Koppel once said that Limbaugh does his homework; Edward R. Murrow, we need you). It took a media research group--Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting(FAIR)--and comedy writer Al Franken to do the media's job. Franken effectively nukes his target. He exposes Limbaugh as a war wimp (Rush thought the Vietnam War was great, just as long as guys from Harlem and East LA did the fighting), a former welfare queen (the same guy who calls poor people "piglets" is the same guy who was able-bodied and collected unemployment), and an overall empty suit. For those of us who have followed Limbaugh, there's nothing particularly surprising here. But the way he scrutinizes Limbaugh is laugh-out-loud hilarious. With Franken around, there will be hard times for the hard Right.
Rating: Summary: A fine book Review: Frankly, I find it hard to beleive that the horde of angry dittoheads who have posted one-star reviews actually read the book. Their complains of "don't have a point or make an arguemnt" seem absurd considering the substantial amount of documented, referenced facts in the book. On the other hand, what do you expect from a crown who prides themselves on not thinking for themselves? This is not, however, a purely argumentitive book. it has a substantial amount of satire, much of it somewhat angry. For example, the fact that conservatives have demonized clinton for not fighting a war he objected to, while conservative supporters of the war weaseled out through far less honest means. This is harped on through a fairly funny war parody ( which heroizes oliver north, ironically ) On the other hand he gives actual ( referenced ) economic data showing reganomics didn't work. This is well-researched and persuasive. Although it came across a bit angry to me at times, it was an excellent book.
Rating: Summary: Doesn't ANYONE understand irony anymore? Review: I couldn't help but notice that all the 1-star reviewers were very upset about all of the Limbaugh weight jokes. This is IRONY, folks. Franken is mocking the crude attacks Limbaugh himself makes!("Did you know that there's a White House dog?") It just goes to show that conservatives really don't have a solid grasp on humor. And besides, Rush Limbaugh IS a big fat idiot.
