Rating: Summary: Blacker than Black! Review: Others' reviews of this album have always baffled me. This is dark, brooding, introspective (One, Frayed Ends of Sanity) and raging music. The songs ARE long; it's a structure that works well with the instrumental and lyric concepts. The production is GOOD! -for poor production, see Megadeth's "Killing is my Business..." It does sometimes exaggerate the rythem guitar, but hey, this is MetallicA! Still, I seem to hear more of a bass presence than others. Metallica's best lyrics are also found in this album, something I've come to appreciate more since Load/ReLoad- see: Better Than You, 2 X 4, Fuel, Prince Charming, others...Boring? It does have a progressive flavor, but only to paint a broader musical landscape; it's not evidence of a poverty of ideas. I wish Black had included a long song or two along the direction of this album...it would have filled it out much better. Justice is an amazing work! This should have beaten Jethro Tull!!!
Rating: Summary: bad production stops this masterpiece cold Review: This album tried to take 1986's Master of Puppets one step further by looking at our corrupt justice system and other typical Heavy Metal topics: Insanity, rebellion...etc. And Metallica, considered by many (not me) to be the best band ever, comes out swinging. "Blackened" in Battery revisited, with scorching guitars and classic Metallica arrangment. However, once you get past the speed at which this album starts out, you notice one thing (well, at least I did) There's no bass. I pumped the bass up to the max on my stereo and still I couldn't hear anything, save for the occasional weak bass trying to work its way into the riffs every once in awhile. The result is that a lot of the songs, though well arranged, come off sounding thin and watery, without the punch that good bass brings to a song. I honestly don't know if Jason Newsted even showed up to the recordings. The production is crap, and it's a shame becuase it ruined whatever hopes this album had to be "best ever" status. Still, "Justice" does boast songs like "One" and "Dyer's Eve", great Metallica and a great effort. Buy this album, and just pretend there is some bass :)
Rating: Summary: The fourth and they're last good album Review: Metallica was the best in the 80's. Once it turned into the 90's they poured out the Black Album, then Load then Re-Load, what a line-up(sarcasm)! This album was almost driven to perfection with very complex song structures, and very smart lyrics from James. There was one problem though. If you know Metallica you'll know this came out after Master, but there was so much pressure from Master (because it was so good) that after this album they took an unexpected change and ruined it all. But this is a great album from the greatest thrash metal band ever so go buy it!
Rating: Summary: Great album but...where's the Bass? Review: Great music, crappy production. The only reason I don't really consider this album to be Metallica's opus work, and one of the "greatest albums ever" is that the production is awful. Listen to any song on this album, and, though awesome, something is missing. Yep, you guessed it. There is no bass. I guess Newsted is playing, but I'm not hearing anything, save for a little bass trying to squeak in between Kirk and James now and again. The end result is that a lot of the songs come off sounding thin and weak, like they were recorded in a giant garbage can. For me, Justice just doesn't have that "oommph", that punch in the stomach that you get when you have excellent bass rumbling away. That said, I think the guitar work is excellent by Kirk Hammett, who delivers big-time on this one. This album is also the last great job on drums we have seen from Lars Ulrich, whose work goes downhill after this. "One", maybe the best Metallica song ever. Who can tell? Don't let the bad production and no bass stop you from buying this one. The anger and aggresion of Metallica come through big-time, despite the flaws.
Rating: Summary: The last of good Metallica Review: The Metallica album is a must buy for any real thrash metal fan! There are a few minor problrms though. The first is that the production on the album wasn't the very best, but it doesn't matter much. The second is that you can hardly hear the bass. Other than that, this is Metallica's most complex album that is definently worth buying. My only question is: why do they have the chant from The Wizard of Oz?
Rating: Summary: Good Effort, but not as Great as others claim Review: I should start by saying that I am a huge Metallica fan and that I have all their albums. Of all those albums this is the one I listen to least aside from the songs: One, Harvester of Sorrow, Blackened, and Dyers Eve. The rest of the album is filled with meandering overlong songs with boring riffs. I will admit however, that most of Hammetts solos are amazing. If you are just entering the world of Metallica start with Master of Puppets (their best album) or Ride the Lightning(second best album) not with what they should have called...And Boredom For All.
Rating: Summary: More "in your face" guitar than any other album Review: This album is amazing. It is always in my car with me and I never get tired it. One of the best guitar sounds I've ever heard. The lyrics are pretty cool too - lots of "big words". The only problem with this is that the bass is nowhere to be found, but it's still incredible.
Rating: Summary: Now here is a good album!! Review: Where do I start? This album is great! A phenomanal opening song. If you want thrash, buy this album! If you like more melow songs, buy this album. An all around, must have CD. This album brought Metallicas first music video, One. The song and video are based on an early 30s novel Johnny Got His Gun. Probabally the best song on the album is Harvester of Sorrow. A metal song that no other band could ever quite duplicate. The song Frayed Ends of Sanity begins with an old Slave Chant that really puts feeling into the song. Another great song is Shortest Straw. A real thrash song thatll have your neck hurting for a month. Unfortunately it is not performed live very often. I dont usually give albums 5 star but this one DAMN WELL deserves it. This is a must have Metallica album. Get the CD, not the cassette. Its worth it. By far the best Maetllica album yet!
Rating: Summary: one Review: My favorite song is "one". After i listened to that song i wanted to memorise the whole cd. I memorised the song "one" and i play it to my self over and over in my head, i think it's great. Scince that time,i fell in love with metalica cd's
Rating: Summary: Sickest Metal Ever Put onto a CD! Review: "...And Justice For All" is definately one of the best Metallica albums out there! You cant get old fashion Thrash like this anymore, but this CD totally provides it. I recommend it to anyone that likes metallica, or just wants some heavy, loud noise to hype them up. No questions asked, this album kicks..............
