Summary: A fine effort for a first time novelist
Review: Marissa is beautiful, professional and single, but she has a fault. She has this thing for married men. She only dates married men and this could get her in deep trouble. Someone is after her for messing with their man. The reader will be guessing at this throughout most of the book. Many suspects will come and go, but the right one will surprise you. Then on the other hand, Marissa mets Levi, an unlikely love interest. He is all wrong, but the attraction is just too strong. Can she resist? Then there is Charmaine, who you will either love or hate, personally I wanted to smack her. And Brandon, what a friend. This was a well written book with intersting twists and turns in the plot that will keep you turning the pages!

Summary: Loved it, Loved it, Loved it!!!!
Review: This book was EXCELLENT. It's a mystery, with a little (unlikely) romance thrown into the mix. Marissa really got on my nerves at the beginning of the book, with four relationships she's juggling, and her disinterest in any man that actually is available. But, boy did I start to feel for her when the stalker started coming after her with a vengeance. As the other reviewer of this book mentioned, I could not put the book down, I just had to find out who wanted Marissa dead so badly. I thought the potential killer was everybody EXCEPT who it really was! Mallette did an excellent job of holding my interest, keeping me in suspense, and giving a crazy twist to the relationship/dating/marriage game. I was very impressed, and I highly recommend this book.

Summary: Attention Keeper!
Review: This was an enjoyabe book. It kept my attention riveted as I quickly read through to find out who was out to kill Marissa. For this to be a first endeavor the author did a wonderful job weaving the storyline together to make it both interesting and believeable. I recommend this to any and everyone and look forward to more work from Ms. Mallette in the future!

Summary: A Magnificent Suspenseful Romance
Review: Whew! I started reading Shades of Jade this morning, and I finished it this evening. I could not close this novel, until I read the last word on the very last page; and even then, I still wanted more! With a palpitating heart and sweaty fingers, I sat on the edge of my sofa anticipating the outcome of this stellar story.

Shades of Jade is an intense thriller laced with romance. Marissa is a beautiful, vivacious, successful women whose got it going on, except that she's got an attraction for married men. She lives this life void of remorse, responsibility, or guilt until a narcissistic stalker threatens her life, stopping at nothing short of her heinous death.

Gloria Mallette does a magnificent job of luring readers into this penchant story brimming with scorching deception and magnetizing romance. The characters are vividly developed, colorful, and alive. The story zips along like an AWOL raft on white water.

Intermingling with the suspense is an arduous subplot that will leave you even more anxious than the mystery at hand. Intrigued, curious, and stimulated you'll turn each page wracking your brain trying to figure out the mystery, while simultaneously cheering the romance that threatens to rupture. You'll never be able to guess the outcome, so just block off an abundance of time, deal with your anxiety, and flow through the pages of Shades of Jade until your curiosity is squelched.

Summary: Atrocious!
Review: This book is horrible. It is my forays with books like these which make me lament for present-day literature. Where do I begin?

The premise for the plot is interesting enough, but was not executed suspensefully. Then ending is not worth wading through the grammatical trash that precedes it.

If you have any respect for the English language, skip this book. It is almost all dialogue. There is very little scene development. The constant quoting without attribution is slightly confusing and ruins the flow of the writing.

The characters speak very poorly and since dialogue makes up the majority of the book, it is really annoying. I understand the use of dialect and local color in literature, but please! Mallette is no Mark Twain. She also interrupts the flow of the book by dividing scenes into different chapters. What is the point of interrupting a conversation with a chapter break when you are just going to continue the conversation exactly where you left off?

I suppose many people could look past all that, but it doesn't stop there. The writer herself uses colloquial expressions outside of the dialogue which ruins the neutral tone of the narrator.

It also felt preachy at times. How many times do we have to hear Brandon, the main character's gay friend, say that he believes in monogamy because he doesn't want to get a STD (as if only homosexuals get them!)?

The breaking point for me was reading the egregious use of mistaken words. Instead of decibels, the word decimals was used. Instead of libel, they wrote liable. The latter don't even have the same function (i.e. noun versus adjective).

This book degrades literature and should be forgotten.
