Rating: Summary: A touching testimony of God's love and faithfulness... Review: It didn't take me long to get through this book. It was touching to say the least, and Lisa Beamer is as eloquent in the written word as she is the spoken. Although I am also a believer, the touching testimony of her faith in and out of hardship is a wonderful example for all to behold. I would highly recommend this book to anyone.
Rating: Summary: This book changed my life Review: As a writer and an avid reader of literature I received this book as a gift and found it to be a pleasing break from the classics. As a child I was brought up in a Christian environment, as an adult my Christianity was on the fence. Let's Roll and the story of Lisa and Todd Beamer's life in Christ and Lisa's subsequent triumph over tragedy was just what I needed to get my life and beliefs back on track and rededicate myself to Christ. I plan to purchase this book and give it to others as a gift in hopes they will come away with the same feeling and outcome. Those who reviewed this book in an unfavorable light must be cold, lonely people.
Rating: Summary: WOW! Review: Let's Roll is truly an inspirational story. I highly recommend it. I wanted to know more about Todd Beamer. What kind of man he was that he could do what he did? I learned about that and so much more. I am not one to read or even recommend true stories by women, but I can't say enough about this book. The Beamer's life is no cake walk even before 9/11. In the face of that and 9/11, Todd and Lisa Beamer are an inspiration to all.
Rating: Summary: This is a woman that demonstrates true faith in God. Review: For those readers that get nervous at the words god, faith, heaven, bible.....this is not a book for you. This is a book for those of us who are looking for the true role models in our society. They are not athletes, movie stars, the rich..........Our true role models are everyday people that demonstrate strength, courage, dignity, pose and faith. The Beamers are that kind of role models. It is not a perfectly written book;however, it is a real and honest look at their circumstances. None of us would want to experience this kind of loss and grief. But, if we did then I hope more people would handle it like Lisa Beamer. She is a real teacher in what faith looks and acts like. I think everyone should read her story and take away a deeper understanding of how powerful faith is in people's lives.
Rating: Summary: Interesting Story, Simply written Review: This book was a quick read. It is a simply written story of an ordinary woman who found herself a widow but out of extraordinary circumstances. I did not expect anything other than Lisa's and Todd's story from her perspective. I do not understand those reviewers of this book who expected more than that, who expected some kind of epiphany. I am not particularly religious but I didn't take offense that Lisa is. This book is nothing but her story from her point of view. If you are interested in her story, then read this book to learn how she coped with what she went through. If you take easy offense of others having beliefs that differ from your own, then you will probably not like her way of thinking. I read it out of curiosity because I wanted to learn more about her and particularly her husband, Todd, to understand possibly what made him the kind of person that would do what he did on September 11. I got out of this book what I was looking for. Nothing more, nothing less.
Rating: Summary: Let's Roll! is inspiring Review: In Let's Roll!, Lisa Beamer, the wife of Todd Beamer, September 11th hero, talks about their lives, their backgrounds, their meeting, marriage, and lives all the way up to September 11th. She also tells the reader about the days right after September 11th, how she told her sons, the numerous press conferences she was asked to attend, and how the family changed their lifestyle without Todd. Lisa Beamer is a Christian, as was Todd, and she often refers to that in her book. She tells how her faith helped her tremendously after the plane crash that Todd was on. Her faith is a very important part of her book, and therefore those who either are Christians or are interested in Christianity will find encouragement and/or questions about Christianity answered. Her courage, kindness, humor, love, humility, yet vulnerablity draw the reader to her. She is not perfect, but she is a good example of what America should be. She admits her faults herself, saying that if she came face-to-face with the terrorist leader she would, indeed, want to administer physical violence on them. Yet she is a courageous women, carrying on with her life, bravely facing the facts; so people, including other families of September 11th victims, will be strengthened and encouraged in tough days when they are trying to live with the tragedy. I strongly recommend this for anyone who either wants to know more about Todd Beamer or is needs help coping with September 11th and its tragedy.
Rating: Summary: The Beamer's Rock! Review: Not only was Todd Beamer a hero on that flight, but he was a hero in the eyes of his wife and children. And Lisa Beamer is a hero as well. Her faith in God is an example for all of us who may go through difficult times. If she can see hope and light and reason to go on living through such a sad sad tragedy, why can't I? I admire her, reading her testimony throughout this book reminded me to pray for her and others who are trying to pick up the pieces after losing someone they loved so much.
Rating: Summary: The Power of Hope Review: "Let's Roll!: Ordinary People, Extraordinary Courage" by Lisa Beamer is truly a tale of courage and the impact the actions of one person can have on a multitude. A life-long journey with God was the source from which Todd Beamer would draw his strength on the fateful day of September 11, 2001. Throughout the book, Lisa gives personal and insightful information into the lives of Todd and his family allowing the reader to feel a kinship to this national hero. The recurring theme throughout the book is that a true hope and an unfaultering trust in the Lord are what allows us to overcome seemingly impossible challenges. The book inspires and motivates one to think bigger and become more than once thought possible bringing to remembrance once again that "with God, all things are possible".
Rating: Summary: Is she really this shallow? Review: Is Lisa Beamer really as shallow and sermonizing as this book portrays? Since I don't know her personally, I can't answer that question, but if you'd like to think of her as an appropriate icon of 9-11 grief, you should probably avoid this book. Full of predictable clichés and 'trust-in-Jesus' slogans, "Let's Roll" fits into the junk-food category of "literature": a lot of empty calories with little depth or insight. Unless you're satisfied by a plateful of platitudes - and can stomach a lot of force-fed evangelizing-- look elsewhere.
Rating: Summary: Inspiring or trite? Take your pick. Review: My sister and I both read "Let's Roll". She thought it was a good book. I didn't. The differences between us will probably help you decide if this book is worth your time. My sister doesn't read many books, and prefers the short, heart-warming stories found in Reader's Digest or Parade magazine about ordinary folks who overcome tragedy usually through some combination of pluck and religious belief. Children who find lost puppies. Ex-convicts who find Jesus. 'Touched by an Angel' kind of stuff. Her idea of a good book is one that is easy to read and can be finished in a day. Not that there's anything wrong with that (look at all the reviews from people who liked this book for the same reasons), but it ain't my cup of tea. My idea of good literature is not how quickly I can finish it, but how insightful or memorable it is. I read a great deal and tend to prefer more sophisticated books with complex characters. I cringe at sentimental stories that seem to be more appropriate for 6-year-olds than adults. So it's no surprise that I didn't care for Beamer's book. It's rather poorly written (loaded with breathless exclamations!), feels like it was rushed editor-free into print to catch the 9/11 anniversary bus, and is full of pat sentiments and preachy religiousity. The story could pretty much be summed up as: "Lisa was shocked to hear that her husband's plane crashed; it wasn't easy to tell the children; she was sad that her daughter would never know her father; God has a plan and will get her through it." That's about it -- not much insight, depth, or substance, and the only items of interest are long-known facts about 9/11 that have been published elsewhere. I also found the tone somewhat grating and self-righteous in Beamer's insistence that her god is the only source of strength or hope in the world. If you're a Christian who shares Lisa's glib faith, it might appeal to you, but if not, you'll probably find it shallow and unexamined. There you have it. Take your pick.
