Summary: One of the best
Review: I read this in less than a day! I don't know why this book got to me. After a couple of years of reading the "romance genre" so many of them fail to have a character that can really convey hurt. And with a background like Derek's I often feel more pity for them than anything. Derek had a nice mix of emotions about his past. It wasn't a complete animosity for his those responsible, or a "woah is me" attitude either. And thank the Lord, Sara wasn't trying to heal him. He wasn't a charity case for her. I love the part about him sleeping with the girl who looked like Sara! The action was both justifiable for a man in love and a man in need. It just semed so genuine to me. If you like a mildly possesive hero with a good amount of bad boy qualities but one unjaded enough to respect a woman with virtue, Derek is your man!

Summary: Dreaming of You
Review: This is the best romance novel I have ever read, and I have read many. I love picking up a book and being able to getting to know the characters, but the hero in this book made me fall in love with him. This is a MUST READ FOR EVERYONE.

Summary: It was ok, but not one of my very favorites.
Review: I read this book before "Then came you", I didn't know it was a sequel. I think I would have enjoyed it more if I had read the books in order.
For one thing, it took me a while to warm up to Derek's character. I know this is somewhat prejudicial, but I was a little put off by the way he talks and a little shocked by the things he had done in his past. I know those details make the character more real, and in any case, I shouldn't hold it against him because he was forced by circumstances. In the end I got to admire him for this, but admitedly, he is not your usual romance novel hero.
Another thing that bothered me a little was the way Sara acts. One day her only interest in Derek is to research his club for her novel. The next day she is trying to seduce him and willing to throw away everything and surrender her virginity to him. Then she goes back to her village and intends to go on with her previous life and her moron of a fiance. But when she learns that Derek is in love with her, and later when she meets him again, suddenly, she is in love with him and wants to marry him. I think the development of their relationship was a little rushed and not very well explained. It didn't seem to me that Sara missed Derek very much while she was away, after all she didn't expect to see him ever again, and wasn't terribly devastated by that fact.
But after their re-encounter in Lily's house, I started to enjoy the book more, I think that's where the story really took off (too bad this doesn't happen until about half of the book) and towards the end, I really loved the story.
All in all, the book is a good read, but make sure you read "Then Came You" first.

Summary: A Dream of a Love Story
Review: Sara Fielding, a proper, if somewhat eccentric, country-bred English gentlewoman, is also a well-known writer of popular fiction. Her first novel, "Mathilda," is beloved by most who can read. Ms. Fielding has traveled to London to research the underworld of gambling for her latest book. Venturing into the London stews late one evening, and taking copious notes on Cockney street cant, local color and any noteworthy incidents that might add flavor to her fiction, Sara inadvertently witnesses and interrupts a violent stabbing. She pulls out the pistol she carries for protection, (target-shooting at home in Greenwood Corners is a necessary hobby, obviously). She shoots one of the attackers, meaning only to wound, while another escapes. Thus, 25 year old Sara Fielding saves the life of Derek Craven.

Mr. Craven is the fabulously wealthy owner of London's most exclusive gambling club. He is a self-made man and wheels and deals with the most powerful people in England. In a world where knowledge is power, he has knowledge of exactly how much money the wealthy and landed possess; who owes what to whom; who is on the verge of bankruptcy, etc.. Craven was born destitute, however, and his prostitute mother abandoned him soon after the birth. Pimps, prostitutes & criminals raised him in the darkest of city slums, & he managed to survive by becoming as ruthless as he needed to be. Cynicism is Mr. Craven's middle name and money is what he believes in. Any tender feelings or emotions he might have had, or hoped to have, he buried deep inside of himself where they can never be found. Love is weakness and weakness is to be despised. Get the picture? So, Derek has little patience for anyone or anything that does not serve his ends. I might add here, for the sake of us romance readers...yes, he also happens to be handsome and a hunk, in a rough, virile sort of way. :) Anyway, he does owe Sara his life...& he is Mr. Gambling King...and she is doing research on gambling...so they get to hang out! Yes, her lovely innocence gets to him...although he resists mightily. And the adventures begin, as does a most wonderful love story.

Both Derek and Sara are fabulous characters, and more complex than I can begin to describe. Sara is a riot doing research after midnight in the most horrible neighborhoods you can imagine. Derek is so tough and so determined not to feel anything, EVER! There is a lively cast of "others", plot twists, humor, and super, steamy sex.

I truly don't know how Lisa Kleypas does it. Another writer might have turned this story into a hackneyed romance. Ms. Kleypas has made magic. This one is a keeper!!

Summary: A meaty romance with fascinating characters
Review: At last a book I could sink my teeth into. I adored Derek, and whilst his avoidance of our brave heroine was a bit absurd in the end (he really did protest too much!!) and the parts with her ridiculous fiance detracted a bit, I really cared for them as a couple. There was some real heat here between them. The villaness was also a bit weak, with no depth, as was Jenner of all people coming to the rescue. But on the whole, a fascinating romp in the seamy underworld of London, and I would like to see more hunky but tender heroes like Derek!

Summary: Good Book
Review: Well, as much as it pains me to have to agree with an overzelous fangirl, see Dori's review below, even I have to admit this is one of the better books to come out of the genre. Now don't get me wrong, I'm not advocating that no one ever critcize a Lisa Kleypas book. After all, Lisa Kleypas has written some duds in her time, every author has, this just dosn't happen to be one of them. I wouldn't excuse Derek Craven's going to bed with one of his prostitutes by saying he's tortured, lonely, whatever-it's just the way the character of Derek is. He is nothing if not a flawed individual, and that's exactly why he is so endearing to the reader. Sure, I don't like to think of poor Tabitha (prostitute in question) who will never get a HEA because she is a woman, but the good girl bad boy dinamics of the story were fun to read about, and it was well written. So, while Derek's infidelity might bother the reader somewhat, I don't think it would ruin the entire book for many people.

Summary: Dreaming Of You ~ Derek & Sara's Story is one of the best!!
Review: I've never really written a review for anything on amazon.com but I could not let readers think very badly over this great book, after seeing the last review.

Yes Derek Craven did take another woman to his bed.. AFTER he sent Sarah back to her village to marry the man who was taking his sweet time getting the vows approved by his over bearing mama!

Having the last part of his heart broken over the fact that he did not beleive that he was good enough for Sarah was Derek's undoing. The last review did not mention that he also feel back into drinking heavely and had been a prostitute himself to the upper crust.

While Sarah had tried to seduce Derek at a masquerade party that he had a his Game Night Club.. he did not give in when he found out it was her.. ok Worthy the factum knocked on the door, but
he did stop.

Derek was brought to us in the "Then Came You" book.. while I was happy for Lily & Alex, I was bitter and unhappy that Derek who loved her fist was left out in the cold, because he could not take the chance to love her:O( I cried my eyes out.. at the picture that Lisa painted..when he was left standing behind a curtain in his office alone.. and he had been taking leassons to imporve his speech.. and had stoped :O(

Derek Craven has always seemed like a unloved Tom cat to me lol

For anyone who enjoyed this book.. make sure you keep an eye out for Lisa Kleyp's new book.. that will continue Derek & Sarah's story through their daughter Lydia :O ) The only down part is that it will not be in its own book, but part of few stories.

I'm a little miffed to see bad reviews on Lisa Kleypas's novels, because she does not write about perfect men who could give Pride and Prejudice's Lord Marc Darcy a run for his money..lol

Midnight Angel was a great book, but people alwyas seem to have issues over Luke's lack of a hand :O( He lost it trying to save his family in a fire, and has a hook. <~~ This makes a hero all that more likeable to me.

Perfect does not always make for a good story. But its nice to see people grow and develope.

Read this book you won't be sorr. I just wish this book was in hardback form :O( Thanks for your time :O )

Cheers,

Dori >^..^<

Summary: Hello? The hero goes to bed with another woman!
Review: Is it just me, or are all these positive reviews insane? At one point in this book, Derek, who is heart-broken about losing Sara, goes to bed with one of his prostitutes who looks just like her. This prostitute then goes on to tell Sara about this encounter, and describes it as evidence of Derek's love for her. Sara is so "touched" by this heart-warming story, that she goes back to him. Yeah, I know that whenever I hear about my man going to bed with another woman, I just can't WAIT to get back together with him. Does anyone who wrote these positive reviews really think that if they were confronted by a look-alike who had slept with their one true love, that they would be "touched" and motivated to run right back into his arms? Please. Get a clue.

Summary: Dreamy
Review: Derek is tall, sexy and rich. Sara is bright, kind and comfortable. And courageous. When Sara saves Derek from knife wielding thugs, she is granted the privilege of observing how Derek's gambling club is operated, using it as research for her next book. Sara is gently bred, but no prude. She doesn't lift her chin at the house wenches, judge the patrons, condemn Derek for providing gambling and women. Her acceptance of the seamy side of life in 19th century London is anachronistic, but don't let that bother you any more than it bothers her.

Derek is afraid to love Sara. Sara is afraid she loves Derek, since she's informally engaged to a Mama's boy you just want to cuff upside the head. Kleypas doesn't disappoint while driving Derek and Sara together and foiling Mama's boy in the process.

The main characters are surprisingly believable, their feelings tender and realistic. The peripheral characters are well drawn. Parts of the story actually made me teary, parts made me laugh out loud. Just a wonderful book! Wish I hadn't read it so I could discover it again.
