Rating: Summary: A unique book with a lesson to be learned about truth Review: In this uniquely crafted book, Nothing But the Truth, written in dialogue, memos, diary entries, and letters, Avi allows the reader to experience the story from a variety of points of view. Philip Malloy, a ninth grader, is not able to join the track team because of a failing grade in English class. His stubborness and lack of effective communication result in unhappiness and isolation for both himself and his English teacher. Although the plot may appear simple, it is really very complex. Afterall, isn't there usually more than one truth to every story? Avi does not provide the happy ending so many may wish for. It is ironic, so true to real life. I enjoyed the book immensely!
Rating: Summary: I think the memos were not needed Review: It would've been better without the memo
Rating: Summary: A great RECENT text for middle-schoolers. Review: This book is one students will readily admit to liking as well as relating to. The concepts of literacy, parent/child relationships, and the notion of "truth" (a concept that illudes us all) asks readers to think about their own conceptions of these topics. I hope I can teach it in my own classroom someday
Rating: Summary: Avi has accomplished something unique. Review: I teach English at an all-boys Jesuit school in Baltimore City, and the students in my class are really enjoying "Nothing But the Truth." Avi has accomplished something uniquely daring by publishing a story that uses non-traditional narrative styles. His use of the different media to tell the story of Phillip Malloy keeps my students' attention, and those media are a great way to inspire creative writing exercises. The students in my English class are planning an adaptation of the story to be performed in front of the whole school. Avi's NBTT has inspired us all.
Rating: Summary: This book's ending wasn't very good. Review: Nothing But The Truth isn't a good book. It was very boring because it revolved around a kid who got suspended for singing teh national anthem and what a big deal tehy made out of it. However, I liekd the book's format of intead of lookign liek a normal book, it had conversations in this format: A: Hi B: How are you? A: OK and you? I also liked how the author gave you many poitns of view, but this doesn't outweigh teh overal boringness of the plot.
Rating: Summary: Surprizing Book Review: I think that Phillip has some personal problems and not to blame them on Miss Narwin. Everyone at the school he goes to seems to love Miss Narwin and say good things about her. I guess this book really shows how a lie can grow and snowball over on the ones that have been lied about. Would a school actually lie to not get the media covered all over it? I like how the author, Avi, has used notes, telephone coversations, and newspapers to show what is happening in the story. I liked the litte twist at the end of the book the best. And was Phillip actually singing the national anthum or just sort of humming it. If he actually knows the words to it.
Rating: Summary: A horrible book by an awesome author Review: i read this book for english class, and was disapointed. i ususally enjoy avi's stories, but NBTT dragged on and on. the plot was he got in trouble for humming. not olny is that a horrible plot, but the main character is a stuck-up snob, which i cannot relate to. he disregards the feelings of others. the ending was also boring and not thought provking. the only good thing about this book was when it ended. this is a good book to assign if you do not like your students.
Rating: Summary: I thought this book was boring because it had no action. Review: this book was alright but it had me wanting to go to sleep. Iwould like to be Phillip Malloy so I could be patriotic and sing the national anthem in front of the whole school. I think this story based on a fake character.
Rating: Summary: nice to read Review: I kind of liked the book "nothing but the truth" its kind of a lesson for not to lie because then it will come to you after all. I didnt realy like Philip because he was just a braty kid that couldnt stand up for himself, i think that the press took it to far with the story. well, its not the best. but its fun to read.
Rating: Summary: I thought this was a good book. Review: I thought this was a pritty good book and I liked it was one of the best book i had ever read and it was a good play to.
