Rating: Summary: ...and then there was light !!!!! Review: I gave myself this book as a gift for my 30th birthday, and as a guide to follow while going through another break-up. I discovered great solitude in learning that my "emotional confusion" and what she calls 'basement behavior' was part of the journey, But not the finish line. Thourghout the book I made several connections with her cleaning house metaphors, that I couldn't go back to my bad relationships habits with men or with memebers of my family. I finally know now the way to the attic where the lights of truth and love are. Thank you Iyanla for mapping it out!
Rating: Summary: A new way to see your inner-self Review: This book helped me find the light and love within myself. It has helped me to see things in a different way and brought me the courage to change old patterns.
Rating: Summary: brings a comforting, in-your-face view of life.. your life! Review: I could totally relate to this book. I felt that not only was I in the meantime, I was wasting my life doing what others wanted and not necessarily what I wanted. I thoroughly enjoyed the book and I found myself in more than 1 of the senarios described. This is a great book for someone who wants to start living life..but doesn't know how to go about it. I thank you Mrs. Vanzant for writing such spiritually and emotionally stimulating literature for the betterment of others. Thanks again. * I bought this book for 5 of my friends whom I thought could benefit -- the ones who read it thanked me for it... the ones who didnt.. well, they are still "in the meantime" *
Rating: Summary: A great guide for people waiting around in life Review: Iyanla walks you through the "house" of your life in a reflective way giving you insight to behaviors, patterns, and the no no's that keep you in the basement of life. Examples and stories supplement the text and it made me sigh as I found out I certainly wasn't the only one in the meantime of life. It also has a stong focus on self - self love, self respect, self discovery - topics that both sexes need to develop before successfully entering any kind of relationship. Its a great book and worth buying!
Rating: Summary: Wonderful Resource for Re-Discovering Yourself Review: If you're going through a period of a lot of soul searching and questioning yourself, this book is a wonderful way to realize just how "normal" your feelings are. It is a great book to curl up with at night - after reading for a while you can really go to bed feeling good about yourself.
Rating: Summary: Don't waste your money on this one Review: Too bad. Ms. Vanzant is a delight in person, but this book is pure drudgery. Nothing new here. The ever-long-running calendar of events in the lives of Jean and Paula and James and Bruce and David, etc., etc., is tiring. After a few chapters of this, who cares? Totally useless, unintelligent characterizations. Just a mishmash of everyone's problems with no intelligent answers. If you want to solve your problems in the "talk-show" manner, this book is for you, but I'm better off finding answers on my own.
Rating: Summary: Very little practical help Review: Maybe it was a poor abridgement, but it seemed like too much story and not enough, "So now that we agree this is what's going on, what do we actually DO about it?" Ms. Vanzant reads the book herself, and she's a pleasure to listen to, but I really didn't get much out the experience.
Rating: Summary: Life Affirming Review: In the Meantime was the best book I have ever read. Before I read this book, I didn't realize how a person's attitude can affect the direction of life. Ms. Vanzant shows you how liberating life can be once you give up the negativity that seems to hold many people down. The way she was able to break it down and simplify the whole process by comparing it to cleaning your house--from the basement to the attic. It is a good way to gauge your personal progress and gives you the opportunity to go back and reassess your progress. I have recommended this book to everyone I know, whether in a relationship or not. It is a book one should read more than once because we are always at diffent stages in our lives and this book can benefit you at whatever stage you are -- if you are willing to surrender and truly hear what Iyanla has to offer.
Rating: Summary: Spiritual Help?? Review: I recently saw Iyanla Vanzant on Oprah. If her book is as incoherent as she is on TV, I doubt I'll gain anything from it. Several times during the show, Vanzant told people to clasp their hands around their head and say, "Save yourself". This reminded me of John Gray, "Men are from Mars...", encouraging people to know off oversized, sponge blocks labeled "anger" with a bat to feel better.
Rating: Summary: What was Oprah thinking? Review: Repetitive, difficult to finish, tiresome and over dramatic. Perhaps I expected too much. Her analogies added to my contempt and boredom of this book. I kept asking myself, "What is she telling me that I haven't already heard before?" Our book club did not finish this one.
