Summary: Ever seen Daria?
Review: Jessica "Notso" Darling is our Daria- smart and sarcastic, and Hope, the "Jane", the artistic best friend, just moved away, leaving Jessica miserable, with the choice of either being alone or hanging out with the Clueless Crew and Scotty, sports star who has a crush on her. Add the fact that her point seems to have run away and her dad is breathing down her neck about her Track and Field scores, and Jessica is not a happy camper. Written in diary form, in Jessica's snarky wit, this is a very entertaining read.

Summary: My Personal Favorite Book
Review: Sloppy Firsts was an exciting book. Jampacked with adventures and non-stop reading. It is about a girl Jessica whos best friend moved away and is having trouble coping with it. While she is in the dumps, her other friends "the clueless crew" tries to help her out. Instead, an unexpected boy Marcus ends up helping her through her hard times. Will her best friend Hope and "the clueless crew" accept the new friendship in between Marcus Fluite (Krispe Creme) and Jessica Darling (Class brainiac)? A book that most teenage girls can relate to. Please read this book you will be pleasently surprised!! I was!!!!

Summary: A Neat Novel With Great Characterization!
Review: The new year is off to a bad start for sixteen-year-old Jessica Darling. Her best friend, Hope, moved away, and she's stuck hanging out with a group of girls she can't stand (aka, The Clueless Crew). To make matters worse, her father constantly pushes her to be the star of the school track team, her mother is wrapped up in her sister's lavish wedding, and her sister is wrapped up in . . . well, herself. To top it all off, Jessica begins to develop mixed feeling for "Dreg" Marcus Flutie (after having several run-ins with him) while nursing a crush on hot senior Paul Parlipiano, who doesn't even know she exists. How will Jessica survive her sophomore year of high school? Written in journal format, with an easy, flowing style and rich details, author Megan McCafferty takes the reader on a journey through the life of a typical teenage girl without being too preachy, condescending, or unrealistic.

While I may basically be too old to be reading books for young adults, when I started flipping through the first few pages of this book in the middle of the store, I was hooked. McCafferty appears to have a real grasp of the adolescent lifestyle and drama. Her rich character development makes the plot line very realistic, and she isn't afraid to insert pop culture into the mix (such as reference to MTV's "The Real World") without being overtly cheesy or too hip. She also inserts some sensitive material, such as Jessica's feelings over her baby brother's death, Hope's brother's death, teenage sex, and Jessica's turbulent relationship with her mother. Even being in my mid-twenties, this book made me think of my experiences in high school (along with that of some of my friends') and Jessica is a character I can actually relate to--especially concerning her relationship with her mother, who I felt sorry for in the end. This book may not exactly be "deep, profound" reading, but it's great for kicking back and relaxing. This book is so engaging, fast-paced, and hilarious I read it in two days (a remarkable feat for me). Based on the character development, plot line, and unique format, I find this book perfect for teenagers . . . and twenty-somethings who still remember high school.

Summary: I love it!
Review: This book is:
a. the best diary formatted book I've ever read
b. the most real novel depicting a high school girl's life
c. a book I'll read over and over again (I just read it again last week!)
d. fun, very engaging, and definitely worthwhile!

Jessica Darling is a very real character, with both her own flaws and quirks and strange relationships with her parents, her "friends" (the Clueless Crew), her love interest, and other people involved in her life. I love the way Megan McCafferty writes, because she manages to make it almost as if she were writing about herself at the time all of this was happening! (Which, of course, isn't true since she isn't in high school...) But that is the goal of every author and I think she has done a fantastic job of it. I highly recommend this book!!!!

Summary: Inspiration
Review: What drew my attention of this book was the title, I admit I was confused and slightly intregued. The librarian told me it was an excelent book so I decided to try it out, and I started reading. I couldn't put it down after the first few pages because this girl was just like me. She lived in New Jersey, and I may not enjoy running, but my best friend moved recently to England and it's shatterted my world. I've also another thing in common with Jessica, I've developed insomnia, and although the school year hasn't started yet I'm waiting for my Marcus Flutie to help me out of my rut, I hope he's out there. This book has helped me see that sure my family and other friends don't know what I'm going through, others out there might, also that the world may have ended because my Hope is gone, she's not out of my life totally yet. I was inspired to not let secrets and distance to come between myself and anyone who matters. Thank you Ms. McCafferty, I appriciate it more than words can say.

Summary: Finished it within 6 hours
Review: I actually couldn't put the book down at work. I actually got into it even though the character Jessica is about 4 years younger than me. I'd definetly buy the second novel.

Jessica thinks when her best friend Hope moves away that she can't be friends with anyone else. She still sits at the same table in the lunchroom with the airhead bunch but it's like she blocks out everything and everyone...

Then her friend Scotty is buggin her but she doesn't understand why because she thinks he has feelings for her but she doesn't know if the feeling is mutual....

Then you got Marcus........... but I can't give all the information, then you won't read it but READ IT! It's pretty good.

Review: this is a great book to read over the summer!!! it's about a sixteen year old named jessica who is going through some troubles in her teen years. her best friend (hope) moves out of town....or out of the sate as a mater of fact. at first, jessica's mom is too busy worrying about jessica's sister's wedding. jessica's dad is always trying to coach jessica with track, and if jessica gets annoyed with her dad, he stops talking to her. one of jessica's friends, scotty, is head-over-heels for jessica. the thing is, i don't understand why jessica goes out with scotty! he is supposedly a totally hott, popular, jock. all i can say is READ THIS BOOK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i can't wait til the sequel comes out....

Summary: Not just for the girls!
Review: I'm a middle aged married guy and got on to "Sloppy Firsts" while randomly searching on Amazon.com one day.I'm also an avid reader of classic literature, politics, and modern fiction but seldom "teen favorites"...and I positively loved this book!Megan's intelligent(quite brilliant actually)writing style is impressive, hilarious, and riveting.

I read the book while at the park and was initially careful to conceal this "teen girl book" from others. That changed in short order as a soon proudly displayed the book giving it plugs left and right.

The next McCafferty book can't come soon enough for this reader!

Summary: Refreshing
Review: Although Jessica Darling may at first seem a bit eloquent and older than her supposed age of 15-16, her quirky view of high school life and the enjoyable rhythm of her words will soon draw the reader in and make her, or him, suspend disbelief. Jessica is devastated by her best friend's move, but still plucky and resigned to carrying on with high school. Her feelings of superiority to her more one-dimensionally characterized classmates are right in line with a real teen view of the world revolving around her and her troubles. It is rewarding to see Jessica grow and realize that the people she takes for granted, such as her mother, a former close friend, and the new girl in school, have more layers than she suspected. Jessica matures throughout the book, and the reader routes for her all the way. Her funny, pithy observations offer insight into the crazy high school merry go round. Her human tendancy to lie is balanced by her strong sense of honor, which shows itself in other ways. Overall, an engrossing, fun read with some depth. I look forward to Sloppy Seconds, or whatever the next Darling title may be.
